Dekopin, means to flick someone on the forehead, which in Japan its a gesture to sort of say "We're good friends". In English terms its like calling your dog "Buddy".

Well it’s more like a casual punishment among kids in Japan I guess.

Fun facts from Japan🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 This makes me smile. From a Japanese point of view, Shohei Otani's way of naming his dog has the humorous naming sense of a schoolboy. In Japan, a lot of Japanese people have been talking about liking Shohei Otani more after hearing this news since this morning. By the way, what's a decopin? What does it mean? If there are any Americans who wonder, "What does dekopin mean?", watch the Japanese manga and anime featuring ninjas called Naruto. There are two brothers, Sasuke Uchiha and Itachi Uchiha, who are characters in the manga, and dekopin has been a habit of the brothers since they were little. The gesture that the older brother Itachi always makes when reminiscing about his childhood or during a sibling bereavement scene is to lightly flick his finger on the younger brother Sasuke's forehead, which is dekopin. So, although the sound is similar to the dog's American name, or rather its real name, Decoy, the meaning is completely different. Also, as a Japanese born after 1980, I remember that this gesture was often seen in Dragon Ball. In old Japan, it was basically a gesture made by a parent or person in a parental or guardian position when they wanted to lightly tame a small child or calm them down a bit. It is actually done with much less force than it looks. In the past, you could actually see it in town. But little by little, nowadays it is only very rarely seen done by elementary or junior high school students when they are chatting and laughing with their friends. Nowadays, the gesture exists almost exclusively in dramas, manga, animations and films.

Kooikerhondje. Originally a hunting dog used to lure ducks. Otani explained that the dog is DECOY because it is a breed commonly called Duck Decoy.

Fun facts from Japan🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵 Dekopin = Odeko (meaning forehead; saying Deko is a slightly broken way of saying Odeko). +pin (Japanese for the sound made when you pop something off with your finger) = finger-popping on the forehead. This is mostly a gesture often used in the past between family members or close friends to say, "Calm down, get a grip." or "Don't be in a hurry, listen to me, there is more to the story". or "You're trying so hard to sound mature, you're so cute." It was used when wanting to say. This gesture can also be used when you want to convey your feelings of support, saying, ``Don't look down. Don't be self-deprecating. Be confident. Always remember that there is at least one person here who will support you and be your ally.'' Use. Also, it's a signal to have an important conversation, saying, ``I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but I think this is an important moment, so I'm going to tell you my true feelings. So please listen seriously.'' It also becomes. It is also used in scenes where the character says, ``It's okay, don't worry. I'll definitely come back safely. So please trust me and wait for me.'' and ``Where have you been? It is also used to say "I was very worried." In any case, this is a gesture used towards someone you have a very close relationship with. Although it is rarely used in practice nowadays, children in kindergarten, elementary, junior high and high school sometimes make this gesture when they want to imitate adults, when they are having a pleasant conversation with friends, or when they want to hide their embarrassment. It is also a common expression in Manga, Anime, films and dramas. In reality, it is usually done very slightly, but in creative works it is often used as 'one of the ways of expressing the strength of a character facing a drunken or evil person'. Most obvious example: the scene in Rurouni Kenshin where Sanosuke blasts one of the drunken men with a single Dekopin blow when he first appears. Second most obvious example: the scene in Jujutsu kaisen where Satoru Gojyou explains to one of his students, Megumi Fushiguro, about the kind of determination it takes to become strong. Third most obvious scene: the scene where Naruto Itachi Uchiha and his brother Sasuke reminisce about their childhood and bereavement. (However, in the case of these brothers, it is a bit of finger poking rather than Dekopin.) So the real name of this cute puppy, or rather the English name Decoy, is a word that sounds similar but has a completely different meaning. It is wonderful, full of purity, with a smiling sense of naming, as if he were a little boy. This news is highly appreciated like that in Japan.

Japanese people are a little confused by the name "Dekopin". In children's language, it refers to the act of flicking someone's forehead with your fingertips. In other words, it is a punishment for the loser of the game.

In Korea, we also have the exact same punishment for losers in many children’s games. It is a playful way of giving a flick to those who lose in a game. It’s a bit unusual but adorable name for a dog.
