Yes the Astros cheated, thats a known fact. But the reason he didn’t resign with the team, was because at the time fans were mad. Obviously looking back on it, it wasn’t his fault. But that IS the reason he left LA.

As a Dodgers fan since 1977 and the only team I have ever been a fan of, I can honestly say the loss of the Padres owner was tragic. It is not as much fun to win without real competition. Not that these players would've chosen the Padres over the Dodgers but to not even have them compete and put up a fight is sad to see. To all the Padres Fans my heart goes out to you. When the McCourt's owned the Dodgers it was some of the hardest years of my fandom. Having to live with owners that are in it solely for the money or anything other than winning is wholly heartbreaking. Just hold tight hopefully someone is on the way to restore your hope. Happy New Year to all....

@@averageadam5001 Did you forget about the rest of the Padres core? You're not gonna be mediocre with guys like Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts. Guys like King, Darvish, and Musgrove as well as Matsui, Cronenworth, Suarez, Kim, and Campusano are also very good pieces. The young guys - Merrill, Marsee, Thorpe, Snelling, and Salas eventually - coming up will be good soon hopefully. They won't win 100 games or a World Series this year, but this team isn't gonna be anything like the 2010s. They'll still be competitive, and frankly, they look better than the Giants and about as good as the Dbacks at this point (not optimistic, but FanGraphs projections have us very close to each other and above the Giants). What we're seeing is the reality of being a small market. You can't sign every guy you want - especially when shit goes bad. But a $200M payroll is nothing to scoff about, and frankly, it's $100M more than they've been my whole childhood.

I also watched him grounding into double plays all April and May. Mark Grant once said "You can't win the division in April, but you sure can lose it", i think Tatis has a much higher ceiling than Soto, he has platinum glove defense in the outfield, speed and power. Did you really say that “San Diego is a big market and as such should spend like the big market team they are”? Clearly you haven’t done your homework on this one. San Diego ISNT a big market, we just had an owner who was willing to spend. The team doesn’t even have a TV deal right now. Also, that logic is just flawed. While i understand how one might get to such a conclusion - big spender= big market- but it really comes down to the owner and his motivation to take out the check book. Yes, the market largely determines the budget, but to make such a blanket statement really diminishes the impact Peter Siedler made and how he completely changed the Padres image in a short amount of time. He was an outlier, an owner who really put his money where his mouth was to put no doubt into our fans minds that he was serious and committed to building a winner here in San Diego. Sure it didn’t result in a championship, but man it was one hell of a performance ride.

@@Hikayuhuy They are close. The MLB had to take control of the payroll and force reductions. For the next few years spending has to be approved by the league. Peter Seidler financed his majority stake in ownership in 2019 when interest rates were zero. They have skyrocketed since then. Also the luxury tax was exceeded three years in a row which means we are paying 39 million to MLB for this season. This is in addition to the 50 million loan to cover payroll for this year. We requested 100 million but only half was granted. AJ Tingler Preller also exceeded the international spending for the year and a 50% tax is owed. The debt load is higher than the collective bargaining agreement allows which is why MLB and the commissioners office is involved. If we didn’t get control of the debt load the franchise could be placed into a receivership. It’s not anything close to what other franchises are going through. We have unique circumstances. It’s multiple factors. We are in bad shape. These are all facts. We lost 55 million last season when we made the playoffs. This year the loss is 100 million. We are not a large market team. We spent like one the past three years. The payroll went from 255 million to a range of 170 to 200 for 2024 and will be reduced further the next few years. Most casual fans have no clue the true financials of the team. Record attendance doesn’t mean a windfall because about 80% of tickets go to the city and taxpayers since we built the stadium with bonds and increased taxes and higher accommodation taxes. We lost our TV deal which was another blow. So yes we are down bad. Which is why you won’t see large contracts or FA signings going forward.

the padres are a small market team, not a big one, they've never even been considered a big market team, even to this day. the only reason they were able to spend the money they did was because of their owner who was willing to spend that much before passing, they also do not have anywhere near the money to sign either players, having to go as far as to borrow $50 million to pay their players, even saying that they planned to shed payroll this offseason, the reason everyone knew soto was guaranteed to move.

With the passing of our active owner Peter Seidler, the Padres have almost new ownership with his family taking over. It’s almost identical to the Yankees when George Steinbrenner passed. The passion for spending for winning went to the grave with the owner. Unfortunately for us Padres fans and Yu, that appears to be our current and upcoming fate, especially now that the Dodgers are the superpower of MLB. Many of the next World Series trophies are going to travel west on I-10 instead of I-8 like we hoped a year ago.

To summarize, what he said is “When I negotiated my contract last year, I told Preller (the GM) this may be too big of a contract, is there anything I could do, like what Ohtani did (backpay parts of my salary) or come up with a smart way to alleviate the financial pressure off of the team so that we could go after Ohtani and even Yamamoto next year. The GM said that it'll be fine and won’t be a problem. That’s why I signed the new contract with the Padres. Then, I guess we had various (financial) problems this year, including the broadcasting fee issue. It’s just sad and I’m disappointed that the Padres didn’t make a move to get Ohtani and Yamamoto. Not even a simple meeting. I feel a little betrayed, and i'm bummed out about it,” ALSO, in the same post Darvish does talk about the Dodgers “I was with the Dodgers, they play smart and I know how hard they all work and play, but that’s why I want to beat them (and so many others)” And he did end it with “But, we got Matsui, so we will do our absolute best. I love Ohtani and Yamamoto, so I’m just happy to be playing ball with them”

I do think the biggest reason they are not doing any aggressive signings this offseason is not because of A. J. Preller but instead of ownership, the death of Peter Seidler probably left the rest of the ownership group in a bit of a unorganized situation and considering their already quite big expenses they don't want to be making big commitments, because for the Padres and Preller to not even be in any rumors or show any interest is not the norm, they are always linked to most top free agents these past few offseasons. Just on this offseason have they been very silent and actually downgrading (Soto, Hader, Snell), unfortunately the death of Seidlerit just so happened to be the same offseason that two of the best talents from Japan went into free agency. At the end of the day Preller has to answer to ownership and it seems that right now the Padres are a bit lost on how to proceed financially, so they aren't taking risks/big signings.

Wrong. We are broke because of AJ Tingler Preller. He hold two positions in the front office and is horrible at both of him. His contracts are atrocious. @@jdsthird I preface that this is all only my opinion and I have no facts to back it up and simply enjoy engaging in this debate :) that said. I mean being broke in the MLB isn't really a thing, I don't believe there is a single team that loses money at the end of the year (maybe the Mets this past year), it's more a question of does ownership want to sink more money into the team or rebuild/retool? And it seemed to me that Peter wanted to spend right now. I'm not saying Preller is a good or bad GM (personally I think he is a quite a terrible one) I'm simply saying that for a team that has shown that they have been willing to spend even when they already had big contracts and were above the luxury tax, suddenly even though there are big names they aren't even trying. I think Preller would spend every year if he could, it's almost a irrefutable fact like: we can count on death taxes and Preller "winning" the offseason, so if the Peter was keeping him around he probably expected exactly that style. So if he is not doing it, I believe it has to do with either a complete change of philosophy from the ownership group, or that they are a bit lost after what happened and are deciding to just not act on anything. My point was more that it wasn't that Preller didn't want to spend, it was that he wasn't allowed. Now that could be because they have a bunch of bad contracts and thus are broke (which I personally don't tend to believe that a big market team is broke, the Mets and Dodgers have spent more money and are willing to spend even more) or because "new" ownership isn't interested in spending as they are not yet sure what to do with the team, because it's not in a good situation if you don't intend to continue to spend like Peter did.

I can’t tell but I think you hate AJ Preller lmfao He’s made bad moves - completely. But Imma be honest, he’s not a Top 10 worst GM in the league. We were praising him when he went all in in 2015 and 2023, we praised him when we went and got Soto, we praised him when we got to the NLCS, we praised him when we made the playoffs in 2020, we praised him when we added pieces in 2021, and we praise him for the farm. Yet now y’all hate him bc the super team he assembled to try to win a World Series underperformed and he traded a player who wants $500M and was going to be a free agent anyway? By no means am I saying he’s a Top 10 GM. But besides the managers and micromanaging, I struggle to find much bad about him. He needs to change how involved with the team he is, and I think he will learn. But realistically, NONE of what happened in 2023 is his fault. Him and Siedler created a team to win - Manny and Xander were injured, Soto underperformed until September, and Tatis had been out for a year. The bullpen was hot and cold, the bottom of the order couldn’t pull any weight, and the bench wasn’t great. The bench not being great I can blame on Preller - you need veterans off the bench but he overstocked. I blame Preller for the bad bench, overpaying for X by $80M (he’s a star but not worth $280M), and micromanaging. But it’s not all his fault and it feels like you’re scapegoating a little. Hell, I wouldn’t replace him unless Kim Ng came calling. Tho, this may be one of his last chances so idk

@@user-uj9hi7nn8y There are so many reasons to hate AJ Tingler Preller. He is a glorified scout. Which isn’t in his job description. What makes it worse for the organization is that he hold two positions, GM and president of baseball operations. He sucks at both. He single handedly ruined the finances of the team with bad contracts. He can’t attract talent to SD because of his horrible reputation. 20 teams won’t do business with him so he is extremely limited with trades. The only way he can get major talent is via trade or overpaying. The league has suspended and fined him multiple times. Yes there is a ton to hate. He lies for no reason at all. It just comes natural to him. He has had a myriad of coaches, managers, and staff in his 9 year tenure which is unprecedented in baseball. There has been nothing but chaos and dysfunction in the front office as long as he’s been here. He has never had a short or long term plan. He makes it up as he goes along and he has never put together a complete roster. He would make a good scout and evaluator of talent. If his position was VP of scouting and talent we’d be okay. The average fans see the stars on this team and think it’s AJ but it’s Peter Seidler’s credit cards and lines of credit that landed those stars. AJ is incompetent and inept in the front office. The organization is extremely dysfunctional. You can’t have that much turnover and expect to be successful. Any person that has a business or management background can clearly see the problems. Leadership at the top is important to the clubhouse and what happens on the field. We had two epic collapses and it wasn’t by accident. 2021 and 2023 happened before and after 2022. The season we went on a run is an outlier. An anomaly. We don’t give the Dodgers credit for the shortened season so we should be consistent and toss ours out. We got embarrassed that year by the Dodgers. So in 9 years we have a history and record with AJ. He’s had ab opportunity with tearing it down, building it up, spending, and operating on a budget. He suck’s at it all. Signing Rich Hill at the trade deadline should be a fireable offense in itself. I’ve never praised AJ for the Soto trade. We were below .500 for the time he was here. He didn’t move the needle for us. AJ did it to make a splash. He loves being in the spotlight. He lied and said he’d be around for 3 playoff runs. He was here for one. He mismanaged contracts and the budget and lost Soto anyway. That wasn’t planned. He was forced into the trade. You can like him. I don’t begrudge you this. But we can’t pretend he’s competent. He isn’t. And any empty chair could do better for this franchise. His ego and narcissism wouldn’t allow him to hire a GM like Peter wanted. He even gave Peter the middle finger when he told him to work with Melvin in 2024. The man is unbelievable. And he’ll be long gone before that contract is up. I believe 2024 is it for him. We already know what’s coming. We’ve seen this movie before.

Purely Baseball, I would be remiss if I didn't take the opportunity to correct a few things and also try to fill in some gaps here. Please don't take this as me trying to be mean, i respect the grind. 1. San Diego is in no way now or ever a large market, it is such a small market in fact that many teams have left the city to never come back. 2. The padres literally had to take out a $50 million dollar loan at the end of the season, the finances aren't looking too great. 3. This type of spending is not the norm for the Padres, up untill 2018 the Padres have tried to keep a bottom half payroll historicaly. 4. Owner Sadler died, could be that the reason the Padres pushed so hard to compete recently is because a sick Owner wanted to get a WS trophy before he unfortunately passed away (RIP). 5 Sadler was alive when he told Yu Darvish these things, if he was still around they may have very well went after Ohtani or Yamamoto. 6. They shouldn't have went after them anyway The padres have not been very good as of late, they were reportedly dealing with clashing personalities in the clubhouse too. They shouldn't keep throwing endless bags of money at FAs if you are already in a bad spot financially and the team just isn't that great. I fucking hate the Padres, their fans talked so much last off-season for no good reason. But I can't help but to sympathize with where they are at the moment and even wish them luck in the future.

Manfred should've expelled every member of the team but the Astros never lost their title, trophy nor ring and Darvish took full blame for it. Plus the Padres just lost their owner and their payroll was going to be lowered so blaming AJ Preller isn't going to solve anything. Re-signing Soto wasn't going to be an option so they traded him. AJ knew he wasn't getting Ohtani nor Yamamoto and signed Matsui instead. Rather a bold move considering their new budget. Losing Hader, Snell, Wacha and Lugo was devastating and the Padres definitely need an innings eater in their rotation and a big lefty bat.
