It's common for MLB interpreters to also handled players' finances and bill payments. Ippei, given his friendship and trust with Shohei, likely had even more access.

I truly doubt that Ohtani made any bets - but I do think he unintentionally made some transactional "oopsies" in good faith to help his friend. Even Ippei's initial statement said that Ohtani didn't actually know what the debt was for. So Ohtani would have still been in the clear after an investigation. I'm curious why they are simultaneously being obtuse with info (like the agency they reported the theft to) that would actually bolster their claims. This is getting more and more convoluted lol

Shohei is only interested in playing baseball better than anyone but not in money. When he was in Japan, his parents managed his money, and he didn't know how much he had in his bank account. In the U.S., Ippei was taking care of Shohei like a baby. Ohtani is not interested in money, and that's why he gave up his high income in Japan and went to the States to play baseball at a higher level. Besides, his English is not good enough to understand anything complicated, although he can handle simple daily conversations.

Regarding red socks ippei supported a Japanese player who wanted to play for red socks but this person could not make it. But it is true that he supported this player trying to get into red socks.
