This is Part 2 of the Making a shoji video
In this video, I explain the cuts to the rails and horizontal tsukeko, tenons, and the jaguchi on the front of the rails.

Hey I just finished my first shoji from your book. It isn't perfect but there's no way I could have come close without the details in the books and these videos. They are extremely well produced and I hope you're able to keep it up! Shoji number two will be underway after I stumble my way through a couple other projects I have lined up. Thanks again!

Awesome. I'm looking to get your book on Amazon this week. It's so awesome that you're doing these videos. Probably the most detailed shoji making videos on youtube. When's the next video come out?!

Ashley Schultz Thanks Ashley. I'm busy making the very complex and detailed patterns for Book 3 while my eyes are still up to it, and with normal work (have to pay the bills), there's not very much spare time. Hopefully I'll be able to get the next video out fairly soon.

Awesome and detailed vídeos! What type of wood is appropiate to making a shoji?

+HyO Startup Thanks HyO Startup. Any type that is stable and fairly straight-grained would be fine. A darker or lighter timber would be up to your own preference. Alaskan yellow cedar (bei-hiba) is a type that is used regularly in Japan.

Does the book explain how to cut the rectangular holes and notches?

Would love to see these videos and more in DVD or buy able format to complement the books. The level of detail in the books is beyond expectation and the videos are a perfect compliment. Following and returning to both the book and videos is really satisfying. Have you considered the DVDs for purchase format? Are there any future plans along these lines? Thanks for all of your work on this.

Nothing planned as the videos are far too time-consuming, and I need to write some more books. The key to the shoji and kumiko patterns are the two exercise videos I made in preparation for these shoji videos and the asa-no-ha coaster video. If you practice those exercises over and over again, and then practice some more, a significant part of the battle has been won. After that, it's just a matter of cutting the kumiko at either 90°, or 60° for the diamond and hexagonal patterns. Trimming the kumiko patterns at the various angles is shown in the coaster video, and this process is much the same for all patterns. And thanks for the kind words.

Thank you Mr. King ... The videos are certainly appreciated. I'll have to be more open to the practicing ... I've yet to be able to cut accurate tenons using the Japanese hand saws. I can see how it would take a long time to develop the skills. Thanks for the reply.

Thank you. These videos are very time-consuming so there's nothing more planned in the medium term. There are a few shorter videos and more pattern info on my Instagram channel at desking01.

Just wanted to say I got your book today. I really appreciate the amount of detail you put in to it. I don't suppose you know any good online retailers for moderately priced tools. Namely the planes and chisels?

Ashley Schultz Thanks Ashley. I hope you find the book useful. I really can't help much with the tools, but there are enough online sellers with quite good websites so you can check and make some comparisons. Good luck with the shoji making.

How to fix, for instance 7,3 mm?
@kskdesign1
@kskdesign1 8 жыл бұрын
+fridunanti The marking gauge is set at 7.3mm (or any of the other dimensions) as normal with callipers or any other measuring tool, and the individual shoji pieces are marked from the back.
