In this two-part video I make up a hexagonal jigumi lattice with an asa-no-ha background and a kawari asa-no-ha feature. This is the piece I teach on my intermediate workshop classes.
Part 1 finishes with the completed jigumi and tsukeko attached.
Part 2 covers the asa-no-ha and kawari asa-no-ha patterns.
The link to the hexagonal asa-no-ha coaster is • Shoji and kumiko patte...

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come to this video to learn how to cut these joints by hand. After the video I think to myself that I can do it, and then I go try it for myself and realize that you make it look really easy, or I’m just incapable of using my Japanese saw lol

Seth, if you're struggling with the saw, can I suggest you go over the exercises video I put up on KZfaq or the exercises section in Book 1. From all my classes, the two problems students have with the saw are, first, strangling it (holding it too tightly and too far up the handle), and second, waving the elbow around. Both problems are easily solved. The second problem especially by simply tucking the elbow into your side as you cut. This will naturally give you the straight line from the saw blade through to your shoulder. Also, you shouldn't stand square to the work piece. A comfortable 45° or so works better. Cheers Des

I'm grateful for these 2 videos. I need a new pull saw. The one your using would be perfect. What kind is it if I may ask? I'm ordering book 3 and 4 soon. Do these books give the different patterns for Mitsukude? I'm loving your work.

Thanks very much Checkers Woodshop. The one I use is the Nakaya EAKS D210C crosscut dozuki saw. Book 3 covers the mitsu-kude hexagonal patterns, and Book 4 covers the diamond patterns, including the yotsu-kude (four-way joint).
