went to goodwill yesterday and bought a macro lens. not the best but not bad either. Needed a macro to shoot wedding rings and now I don’t have to go out and pay $$. I got mine for $3 and a great camera bad for $5 🤗 Just make it a routine to go to the thrift stores or pawn shops every week. You bound to find something once in a while. I also found a working twin lens camera a few years back.

Willem, the Canon A-1 was originally a semi professional camera when it was released. Definitely not a budget option. The AE-1 was the cheaper amateur enthusiast option. The AE-1 commands higher prices now simply because it has been over hyped and is frequently recommended as a beginners camera.
@hahaahah7214
@hahaahah7214 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately nowadays the AE 1 has some flex issues (the crammed circuit board that’s at the top) while the A1 doesn’t have that problem to my knowledge. Plus the AE 1 uses a finicky plastic piece for both the ISO and the shutter speed selector which you either change the film ISO with or break
@theren8311
@theren8311 Жыл бұрын
@@hahaahah7214 Not me with an AE-1 that's existed and used since the 80s. My father used it and handed it down to me.. Maybe you just need to take better care of things?The only problem it has is dirt in the creases. Pretty sure some of that dirt is older than me.
@hahaahah7214
@hahaahah7214 Жыл бұрын
@@theren8311 the flex breaking is an issue no matter how good you take care of it, just will it happen is left to rng. Not a bad camera per se but its also not super reliable, seen a couple with the aperture set mechanism failed too. Good for you if you have one working tho, they are great lil cameras when they work!

Yeah the pricing on film cameras make no sense at all. The Pentax K1000 is crazy expensive because it's a 'barebones starter camera'. But any other completely bare mechanical SLR is 5 times cheaper...

I shot an A-1 in the 1980's, and still regret selling my original A-1 when I went to college. Every time I've picked up an A-1 (since 1980), the image in the viewfinder makes me feel like I'm breathing in a breath of fresh, cool morning air. It makes me stop, think, and enjoy the process

Willem, The Canon A-1 was the most complete, professional, electronic camera that Canon ever made!!! They promoted the AE-1 and AE-1 Program. This camera did everything the others did and a whole lot more!! It was a complete system camera including data backs, 250 shot rool back, winders, 5 FPS motor drives and ALL of the excellent lens lineup! Its the only camera you would ever need!

Not sure what his definition of "budget camera" might be. When it was first introduced, it was the most sophisticated camera on the planet, and carried a price to match. Years ago, when a friend wanted to get into photography, I bought him an A-1 because it gave him the option for use from fully manual to fully automatic. Also, I didn't want him borrowing my Nikon lenses.

Hey, about the noise: look for Canon Squeak. Is the mechanism that moves the mirror up and down. It's actually super easy to fix. just a drop of machine oil in a specific part under the bottom plate and done. Mine was actually affecting the shutter speed because the mirror wouldn't move in the right speed.

Great review. I love my A1 as well. I'd recommend getting the 50 1.4. Its cheap and very good. Personally I got the 35f2 (radioactive), 50f1.4 and 135f2.8 and can recommend all of them. What I really like about the A1 is that you are able to adapt other lenses and still shoot Aperture Priority in Stopped Down mode.

Loved this video, man. Classic Willem vibe, and really appreciate the abstract theme of a laid back review/vlog. Been shooting the A-1 with a 50mm F1.4 for the last ten years and definitely been experiencing the same thing when shooting at low aperture values - my dog sneeze shutter squeak is about thrice the noise of yours, so it might actually be messing with the shutter speed/camera shake in my case. Anyway, this camera is so great and a real tank. Budget or not, you can always count on getting that old school full frame style from this sucker. PEACE.

Great review and very nice shots. I've had my A1 since 1981 and I can't imagine shooting with anything else. My favorite lens is the 28mm 2.0 ssc breech lock lens. I also shoot with the 85mm 1.8 ssc breech lock. I use the motor drive because it just looks so good and sounds better on the single frame advance.
Canon A-1, AE-1 and AE-1 program comparison. which is best?
