They actually developed the game where if you shoot the gas tank it actually leaks. At least in story mode it does. And yes it does eventually run out of gas and stop. They only added the over-the-top explosions for the '80s Michael Bay flare. And of course you can't forget arcade physics.

GTA 5 Cars already has realistic mechanics. Not only that GTA 5 cars don't explode when shot in the fuel tank, instead. It slowly leaks, and eventually the car stops running due to an empty fuel tank.

Actually, if it were mostly empty, there is a chance it WOULD just explode. See, while gasoline itself burns, it also emits tons of fumes. Those fumes are ACTUALLY what powers your car, its gas fumes going into a combustion chamber, and having enough pressure applied to cause them to explode, creating energy, and running the engine. Well if the tank is mostly empty of gasoline, that means its MOSTLY filled with fumes and air. And those fumes, as mentioned before, are VERY much explosive! Combined with the oxygen thats mixed in, it could be a very volatile situation indeed!

Gasoline engines don't like it when the fuel explodes from compression. It can cause engine damage. They use spark plugs and the fuel charge burns quickly but doesn't explode. Diesel engines DO use compression to ignite the fuel mixture and the small explosions are why diesels are noisy.

The combustion is what powers the car. Fumes are what comes out of the exhaust. The gas needs a specific spark to ignite it properly. Otherwise it just catches fire.

Explosion only happens when the expanding gasses has no where to go and build up pressure till it fails. Like a cartridge for a gun, gun power burns but it is the pressure build up that launches the projectile that causes the explosion. In a gas tank even on empty the tank is full of fumes, you need oxygen to get the fumes to ignite. This has been known for a very long time, run a new car out of gas and turn your key on the sparking of the electric fuel pump won't start a fire in your fuel tank as there is no oxygen.

I expected that you haven't tested anything yourself and you're just assuming that gasoline is supposed to explode because that's what it's made to do. I have to disappoint you because there's not going to be an explosion so quickly. So, you would say that if the tank is leaking and you throw fire under the tank, the car/tank will explode? The tank/car needs a precise mixture (vapours, air...) for an explosion, and if it is not, then there will only be fire. We tried it when I was 13 with friends and the car just caught fire, that's all. That doesn't mean it's safe or that it can't explode, but that it doesn't explode so quickly as some people think. That's why all the cars in the movies have a manual explosion mounted under the car, which is activated by pressing a button. If they used in movies realistic explosions, 90+% of the vehicles wouldn't explode. There is also real information on KZfaq, and the person who uploaded the content may know more than someone in the comments. In this case, he is also right.... 🥂

Still unlikely to cause an explosion. Mythbusters put it to the test years ago and found that the only way to really get a fuel tank to explode is with a full-blown mini gun loaded with incendiary ammo. The biggest issue is just that one bullet hole doesn’t pull in enough oxygen to allow for an explosion, so it just leaks burning fuel. You have to open lots of holes or one big hole to make an explosion possible, and even then, it’s not that much of an explosion. Granted Mythbusters was testing propane tanks, but most of the same issues would probably apply

Only one film I’ve seen that gets this right. Terminator 3 Salvation. It’s from the 2000s. Got lots of pushback at the time but now people are slowly starting to love it. But anyway there’s a scene where this happens with a massive truck filled with gas and well… Nothing happens. It just leaks. Until they threw a flare at it; if my memory serves me correct.

21 people just believed a fucking lie lmao. Look it up, they tried every commercial firearm and it didn't do shit. They eventually got tracer rounds (shit you can't without a fuckton of special permits) which finally got the gas to ignite...still didn't blow up the car though.
