@hairymanonetwo4 жыл бұрын
Well....I milked cows for 40 years......now switched to stock cows. Ive learn very quickly most farmers neglect stock cows. Expect them to eat trash...poor quality pasture. I grazed milk cows my entire time and if I ever treated the milk cows the same as most farmers treat stock cows the herd would have went dry in a week ! I always thought it was about " production" but with stock cows...I guess not so much ! Cant expect a calf to grow on only a forth of the cows possible production ! Just my experience !

We have 50 beef heifers we kept back that are the same age as the bottle calves. They were right across the fence from each other when the first one got sick. Non of the beef heifers got sick or even coughed but almost all of mine started to cough a little. I think beef animals just tend to be hardier and more well adapted to all outdoor environments. You are right on

Quick question, How old or big would you say a calf should be to where it’s not threatened by coyotes
@hairymanonetwo4 жыл бұрын
Keep the calves close to home...... Ive had stock cows or a long time. I live near a rock quarry....and see coyotes all the time......they live there. However..... no calves have been taken yet. From what Ive learned often its not the coyotes.... its the farmers neglecting to care for the cattle in total ! Find a dead calf and blame it on a coyote. If a calf is sick..or slow....of course a coyote will kill it ! And if a calf died......over night the coyotes can and often do consume most of the calf. Be careful with what people tell you......and watch the cattle !
@FarmandHammer4 жыл бұрын
After a calf is about 2 months old I dont think one coyote would be able to get it. But a calf can be 500lbs and if he is sick enough a coyote can just run him till he collapses and then kill him. We don’t have problems with coyotes getting babies as the cows in the herd form a group and protect all of the calves. It is also open season year round here in Missouri for coyotes so if we see a coyote chasing cows we normally try to get rid of it.

Thats the bad think about cows if they get pneumonia once it has more of a chance coming back when they get older. Pneumonia deteriorates their lungs and affects the way their lungs function and if left untreated it eats the whole lung and kills them but once a part of the lung is affected its impossible for that spot to reheal

@FarmandHammer4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t done any hair or blood samples. But they always have a mineral block and they get a loose Summer mineral bag every other day, so I feel like they should be fine on minerals. Could they still be low with basically all of the mineral they could want?
@rochrich12234 жыл бұрын
I expect that you are right about being OK on minerals since you are paying attention. I originally asked since some of the animals had orange hair showing over black. It reminded me of You Tuber Justin Rhodes milk cow he had so many problems with a year back. Copper deficiency can cause pigment loss but Mr Google tells me it's expected to be worse around the eyes. I didn't see that watching this video again. It could be sun bleaching so far as I can tell. Another thing to expect with Cu- is sickliness. Since you haven't had continuing problems, it reduces the likelihood even more. I added Se- to the question since it can cause birth defects and you had that one case. Lots of causes of birth defects, so what are the odds.
@rochrich12234 жыл бұрын
Oh and You Tuber "Farmer Tyler Ranch" recently lost 3 head to pneumonia. The UC Davis autopsy reported contributing factors of hardware disease and very low levels of copper and selenium. BTW, I might be mixing up your farm with another about the birth defect.

what do u or other american farms with dead livestock? in Alberta,Canada our hog farm we had to have build a large freezer that holds 50+ market size hogs, and we have to freeze any dead hogs in it, once a month or when needed a rendering truck comes and hauls all dead animals away. we also have 4 regular size freezers for wienner size or smaller pigs. my biggest pick of was 43 large hogs but that was when we had over 15,000 hogs at one time.

At least the guy just did it one time and then left her alone. That way she could lie down and go to sleep peacefully. And rest up. If the disease had gotten any worse he probably would have done the same thing. But with a chemical that stops the heart but luckily he didn't have to do that.
