I have progressively gone to smaller shot size for ducks. Used to shoot #2 and BB all the time, but I found that unless your shot is perfect, only a few pellets will hit the bird usually ending up in a wound. I now shoot 4s and sometimes even #6. Shot percentage went way up. I think that smaller pellets in the vitals is better then a bigger pellet in a wing or guts.

Federal is great, especially their buckshot. They use a harder alloy than competitors so it patterns and penetrates better. Brassfetcher did some testing that showed federal #4 buck penetrated as much as Winchester #1 buck

Great video. I've always wanted to skin a late season goose I've shot, wrap it around ballistic gel, and shoot it. It would be interesting to see how much each load would penetrate the gel after going through the feathers and fat. The late season plume is what will make the difference if you're shooting at 40 yards. Thanks for the vid.

@6:45 in the video it is stated that lead patterns better than steel. Hmm. In my tests and what others have said, this is incorrect. The reason why, steel shot doesn't deform like lead does. More true pellet fly straighter.

couple points, There is no head and neck on duck or goose more than couple inches and only half that to center but it may need to penetrate thin bone . Thats why the smaller tungsten shot is great it is small but so dense it penetrates easily . Think of a stabbing action with an ice pick versus a ball peen hammer . The ice pick penetrates with very little force while the hammer wouldn't really penetrate at all even though the hammer is much more powerful. Think of a goose as a flying turkey . Velocity and small shot kills. The downside of small steel shot is that the velocity falls off much quicker and is affected much more by wind so it allows more drift especially as it is slowing down. This is why I usually carry two guns one with 3 inch 4 steel high velocity for less than 40 yards especially small ducks. One gun with 3 1/2 inch tungsten blend 2 s or the Federal Heavyweight 15.1 density Turkey loads in 6 or 7 shot. yes its expensive but get it on sale and not too bad. Often at Rogers $15 for 5 with extra off with coupons etc. Remember if you aim well it will just take one shot and very few cripples unless you shoot over 70 yards. This load will literally kill waterfowl at 80 to 100yds but I don't advise it too many cripples past 70yds again pattern density not that great that far and will take shooting more shells but the 6 will penetrate far enough to kill. In the grand scheme the cost of shells is small compared to other waterfowl hunting costs for most of us. I just don't want to shoot $2-$3 shells at close teal !!! Two guns is a great compromise one just a 2 3/4 "dove" gun is fine for the close shots. If you consider this make sure it is legal where you hunt and make sure both are plugged etc. more importantly make sure everyone with you is appropriately licensed or if checked people may well get ticket for hunting without a license and even with video evidence you would end up in front of a judge and a lot of hassle. Remember it would be hard to prove even with video that someone didn't shoot the extra gun since you would have to prove you videoed everyone every minute (think dead battery and camera angle here).

Bobby, I have been a Federal fan for my whole life so it was interesting to see the production video and this testing video. In the comments below, several people have asked what choke was used in the patterning tests? Maybe I missed it but I never saw the answer to the question. What choke was used and what was the constriction? The folks at Federal were very generous with their time and expertise and allowing you to film in their facility. I know it's not possible for you to cover everything in one video but it would have been informative to compare performance results of each shot size with each choke/ choke tube (Improved cylinder, modified). In general, steel shot usually shoots modified patterns through improved cylinder choke, and full choke patterns through the modified choke. These results suggest that the tests were conducted with a modified choke. Of course this may vary with different guns and different barrels. Well done video and thanks for sharing.

I have been using #4 for rabbit hunting because it is a about the best in high brush area's. It cuts brush very well and still has enough pellets to get the rabbit. I have shot ducks on the fly with a single shot .410 #4 and bagged 2 duck with 3 shots in 30 seconds when i was 12 years old 45 years ago. I still have number 4/ 20 gauge shell from when i was a kid CIL and Canuck brands.

Federal has come out with some very good ammo. However I have used the blue box and I'm not impressed. The one I'm quite impressed with is the Federal upland steel. The cheap ones in the green box. They are the dark red 2 3/4 #6. Haven't had a single problem with them. And out of the box, I've olny missed 2 shots on either rough grouse or quail. I do wonder the actual durability of the shell, waterproof, hot car proof, primer success rate, shelf life ECT.

One thing to take away from gel test, #4 had less penetration at 40y than the calibration BB-gun did at point blank! Would you shoot a goose with a 500fps BB-gun up close????. #4 is Not enough at 40Y to be ethical in my opinion. I pattern tested a 20ga #4 steel round at 45y by putting a target on a heavy cardboard box, and to my surprise there were pellets rolling around in the box when I checked the target. Always always test your ammo in your gun before you go hunting like they stressed in the video.
