To me 3.5 inch shells are overrated for waterfowl hunting here in Ks. Northern big honkers its a different story, hope you all enjoy!

@Chad Klaren I wish I was as tough as you. Been killing birds 30 years. I quit using 3.5 inch shells when puberty ended. I don't need the biggest or baddest. I drop ducks all day with 2.75 shells. Sometimes I'll go to 3" on big Canadian Geese but as a rule I shoot 2.75 Bismuth

I, along with several less tech savvy folk, are thankful that you take the time to share a lot of need to know info. Yor positive attitude, humility and humbleness makes for a real blessing. Thank you from Eastern Washington state. FULL choke = FULL limit. Been my mantra from the lead days and stuck with it. Brady Gies

I use an old 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch shell and I do fine. 3s are great I just grew up on 2 3/4 inch so I just still use them. High brass 2 3/4 are just as good as 3s in my opinion.

The best thing you can do is pattern your shotgun with different chokes to see which holds the best pattern. A full choke in my Berretta leaves big holes in the pattern. Modified seems to work the best with all different shot sizes for me.
@jimhuntsaz2305
@jimhuntsaz2305 6 жыл бұрын
Chris Haarstad how fast is your load through the full choke? Pellet deformation is common in hot loads and a full choke (loads over 1300fps). High speed steel is a sales gimmick. I'll take denser patterns with less fliers over speed any day.

One thing to consider that's almost more important than your pattern is your shot string

lead shot deforms not steel shot and high speed steel shot hits harder. denser patterns and have high speed is what the 3.5" 12ga was made for cant have both in a 3" shell not enough room for shot and powder

I live in Alberta, and---while I generally use a dedicated 12 Gauge goose gun--I have downed Big Canada's with 3 inch 20 gauge with number 2 steel at 30 to 35 yards with it. Right load for your gun, with a well pointed shot will get it done.

I know a old gent here that has a 8 ga shotgun that belonged to his Grandfather. Thing is a double gun with external hammers it fired a 3.25 in, 3.75 in and 4 in brass casing it would kill ducks out of a flock at 130 yards he said. Now I have a Remington Model 1100 12 ga. 30 inch barrel choke is full its only chambered in 2.75 inch, with #2 steel I can take ducks and geese out to 50 yards.

My best load I have done is reloading high velocity ITX #4 shot. I think I use the 1 1/8 ounce bushing for three inch shells. The shot is almost as heavy as lead, soft, but holds up for higher velocities. It is nice to take down geese and ducks in one shot. Son has done good with 3” 20 gauge ITX as well. Tempted to cut 12 gauge loads to the 2 3/4” but concerned loss of velocity will not be as effective on range or geese.

Best advice ever!! Shoot your full choke. Period. Practice with it daily... that’s the biggest game changer in hunting with a shotgun. I mean if you are turkey hunting you’ll want an XX or even XXX full, but I always use a full choke when shooting ducks and geese.

Here in ND as long as you’re not taking 50-70yd pot shots at giant and greater Canada’s you don’t need anything more than a 3” shell. I use a 20ga for everything nowadays and it works just fine as long as I’m selective with my shots.

Last year was my first year of actual consistent waterfowl hunting and I must say I am addicted. I went hunting at least 3 to 4 days out of the week and I only use a 3 1/2 inch shell probably five timesThroughout the entire season. I totally agree with you that you don’t need a 3 1/2 and she’ll kill ducks or Geese. I Actually just left a gun store about five minutes ago where I purchased me my first semi auto shotgun the Browning A5 we can swing chambered in 3 inches. Call can’t get your fast enough I am Addicted to waterfowl hunting. Thank you for all your tips and information you give Watertown hunters!!! You’re the man keep doing What you doing

I shoot a Stoeger M3500 with 3.5 in. Hevi Metal #2s for mallards and big Canada’s all year in Ohio normally in sub zero temps. I actually save shells by doing this bc the plumage on the birds up here is so heavy that you just can’t kill birds stone cold without that 3.5 in. setup. We only hunt fields and the Ohio River big water so a lot of shots are passes at 40+ yards. Early goose season in September however I shoot the cheapest 3 inch I can find bc the birds barely have feathers. It basically all depends on how you hunt and where at. Great video man.

BobbyGuyFilms crumpled them from 5 feet to 50 yards....only draw back is got a bunch of teal or ringbills up close hugging decoys and jump up and knocking a few down you do blow the crap out of them. Had a flock of gwt last year come bombing in and without thinking jumped up shot and the first teal took a full pattern and actually shot back out from the force of the pattern hitting it. But I refuse to shoot 3.5 inch. There's no need for it imo unless your turkey hunting.

I spent the extra money on the 3 1/2" chambered shotgun and shell and now I NEVER use them. I use 3" Magnum Turkey loads and a Turkey extra Full choke. Last year I took two Turkey with one shot. When I started to really get into bird hunting I bought a stoeger m2000 (had 500 bucks to my name) that didn't shoot the 3.5 did just fine for the most part. Shot a friends Franchi and fell in love, bought the Intensity for the option of running 3.5. I think I've used one box of 3.5 in the field in the 4 years I've hunted with it. The only knock I can really have on my Franchi is the factory chokes didn't work for me. Bought a Carlson choke set and I always left my Long Range in. Even when creek jumping and upland hunting. Run 2s and BBs like you said.

10 gauge with T shot. That's what I want. I would want a gun that's at least 9.5 lbs If I were to shoot over 1.5 oz loads on a regular basis. For me 3.5" shells are just too much muzzle jump and kick in guns under 9 lbs. Reloading is the only way to go with 10 gauge. For one the factory loading and availability suck. 2nd the hulls just cost too damn much to buy every time you fire. Someday, someday.

There is also the change in attitudes to WADS. It is becoming more obvious that in Europe lead is dead. Now the next target are plastic wads being replaced by green wads One way to make like difficult is to mandate green wads. These in general don't work with steel and other non tox as you lose on internal volume to give protection to barrels etc. So, there is an above average chance that in the future we may be using 3.5" shells but with 3" magnum loads....

My hunting buddy only uses Kent 3" 3's 1550 fps with a modified choke and that's all he needs, I've seen him make some 60 + yard shots and even kill two birds with one shot many times. . What works best for me are Kent 3.5 3's 1625 fps with a ported Hevi shot mid range choke. I think it's really what works best for you and what you feel the most confident using.

In your opinion, when it comes to duck's only would you use size 4 or 3 steel shot?

i just found your channel... I am glad you said what you said about the choke, my vinci only shoots 3" also and I live in ND where we do get big honkers, I watch guys shooting 3.5" shells all the time wing birds because they don't shoot a full choke or the more than full chokes made by carlsons. I personally shoot the black cloud choke and love it, from partridge to cranes, the only thing I take it out for is doves.

Bobby, good vid. Soldier in stationed in VA and duck seems to be pretty popular. Never done any waterfowling but love to hunt and love the outdoors. Hoping to learn more and maybe even get out in the next season or two.

Maybe you are using lead in this scenario but I’m pretty sure it’s not recommended to shoot steel through a full choke as it puts added pressure on the barrel and can cause damage to the lining of the barrel! Patternmaster chokes consider to be tight but are in fact modified to ensure safety as mod with steel equals full lead pattern

BobbyGuyFilms are they the chokes that are designed to bulge instead of barrel because usually most full chokes say no steel and patternmaster steel shot chokes are only mod

31/2 or 3 inch have the same power, if the speed is 1450 ft per sec for both shells, the power is the exact same for each shell. yes more pellets for 31/2 but the pellets are at the same speed

A 3.5 inch gun is stronger and allows souped up 3 and 2.75 inch shells. You can load considerably over 11,500 max.

Great explanation! I started waterfowl hunting last season, I bought a 3.5” chambered gun not knowing what I really needed. I’ll definitely be adding a full choke and using 3” shells this year!

I am trying to figure out if I should make my first shotgun a m3500 and m3000. I would like the option for 3.5 just because why not? I live at Grizzy Island California and want to hunt pheasants, duck, and deer to start off.
