A properly sized bullet prevents chain fires from the front (which are rare to the point of non-existence. Chain fires ignite from the rear. Properly fitted caps prevent them.
@duelist195413 жыл бұрын
@jebusHchru If you get a good seal on the bullets, you don't need grease to prevent chain fires. About 10 years ago the NMLRA did tests that showed that chain fires mostly occurred from the rear due to loose or fallen caps.

I was making my own paper cartridges 20 years ago. I had a brass mould that made a heeled conical bullet. I made a form out wood for the diameter. I cut cigarette paper into a curved triangle shape so that the mouth would be straight when wrapped around the wood form at the proper diameter. I used just a little dap of Elmer's glue to hold the paper. Then I glues the formed paper cone onto the base of the conical bullet. powder load into the opened, tapered tail, then folded it over and glued.

I know this is old, but an old technique was to point the muzzle up to re-cock the pistol, so that the spent caps would fall off out of the way of the hammer. This is what I do and I have no problems with jams or anything.

@LifeisGood762 I've not seen any authentic conicals for sale ready-made. Buffalo Bullets has a non-authentic conical that shoots well. I use Lee molds and make my own.

I've been shooting cap and ball revolvers for decades. I've made my own paper cartrridges. This video points out a failing of the paper cartridges, but it was edited out: paper cartridges rarely slip easily into the chamber. You jiggle to get them started down the chamber. Doing so, the paper tube can be easily broken, spilling the powder. The bullet contacts the frame, interfering with a straight start down the chamber. Paper ctgs.are not nearly as easy as this video suggests.

This is one of my early videos. I have an external microphone now and a "dead cat" to cover it, but since these days I often shoot with a three camera set up, I still pick up noise sometimes on one camera or the other.

I like the wind noise, it makes it more real. Although one of those wind noise generators like the orchestra has might be even better. It's the spinning wirring thing on the Ennio Morricone sound tracks.

OK, in 10 years time, you probably have already learned this, but that Uberti has a cylinder stop in between chambers, it's perfectly find to load six shots in it.

Correct. You do not NEED to use flash paper. I have made cigarette paper cartridges and flash paper cartridges and test fired them both in my .36 - 1851 and my .44 - 1860. Ignition was fine for both. However the cigarette paper did not burn up completely and did leave residue in all chambers. The flash paper and flash glue burn up 100% and leave ZERO residue.

I use the the Lee conicals in .36 and .44 with cigarette rolling papers. I've found a 3/8" and 7/16" straight dowel works fine; fold the end of the paper tube over the end of the dowel, drop a drop of super glue on it and stick the bullet on. Fill with powder through the open end, twist the end with wet fingers, chop off the excess. The Lee conicals will fit over 35gr. powder in the Pietta .44 and 25gr powder (barely) in the Pietta .36 (I backed the .36 off to 20 grs, and the .44 to 30grs, but will probably up that back to 35 grs, since there wasn't an issue ramming the bullet home). Seems like a little faster process (tho less authentic) than what's in the video, and I haven't had an issue with ignition.

HI, thanks you for the info =-) i will try the nitrate cartridges in my Dragoon and a cap rifle, i will let you know how well it works in the rifle, maybe a little powder booster than the cartridge. or just do it the other way you explained, it will still be faster than i load now either way =-)

The paper cartridges load much better in originals than in reproductions. You can grind out more space between the barrel & the mouth of the chamber. Then rolling the load under the rammer is much easier and more period correct
@SweetMooch11 жыл бұрын
i've seen people use rolling papers. some are more thick then others and would be perfect for this seeing they are pre-glued, just roll them around a dowel of the correct size.

I've been experimenting with rolling my own using tissue paper (The same stuff you shove into gift bags). The cartridges seem sturdy enough to deal with and good ignition so far (no misfires or hangfires). I dip the bullet end in a 50-50 mixture of petroleum jelly and paraffin for lube, which might be too hard, will probably increase the jelly in the next batch.

i nitrate my rolling papers by a super fast dunk in spectriced ( its a weed insect killer you can pick up in any of the big chain stores with garden depatrtments) and letting them dry. spraying with a mister works too. its some pretty nasty crap though. its part pottasium nitrate and god only knows what else. DO NOT LICK THE PAPERS ! a very small paint brush picks up enough moisture to wet the edge. i use water to seal the cone edges for convienience. one more thing ,,,, test both thick( TOP ) and thin ( zig-zag /bugler) papers. once you get your procedure down pat it wont take very long to twist up a bunch. keep your eyes open at the range for plastic cartridge holders you find in some ammo packing. .45 acp works best

Mike ,What are your thoughts on powder coating conical bullets for BP Pistol use? More importantly, In use with paper cartridges respect to this video.
@pommel4710 жыл бұрын
Maybe so. I have an 1858 which I bought with a conversion cylinder to fire .45 Long Colt with smokeless. It is amazingly accurate. Maybe I should try it's original percussion cylinder with paper cartridges? I agree that black powder guns certainly seem to be uniquely persnickety.

i notice that your not greasing the ends of the chambers to prevent a chain fire. is there a built in wadding in the cartridge to keep any heat from getting to the powder? or does it rely on the fact that if properly loaded, you shouldn't have any powder residue that could be ignited by a spark ahead of the tight fitting bullet?
@phillycoppa353411 жыл бұрын
which diameter conical bullet do you recommend be better for a uberti 1860 army? i would like to cast my own out of a lee mold... track of the wolf offers a .450 and a .456. but uberti recommends a .454...why are things getting complicated when switching from round ball to a conical bullet lol

What bullet mold is used to make the conical bullet in 1:38 of the video? Thanks
@duelist195411 жыл бұрын
that would be tough, but maybe you could make a cartridge wrapped in nitrated paper that would work. I think ignition would be the problem. I can't imagine that working at all with a flintlock. Actual paper rifle and musket cartridges were designed to be torn open and the loose powder poured into the barrel and then the ball rammed down over the powder and the paper used as wadding.
@jefflang62715 жыл бұрын
How difficult was it to seat the cartridge before rotating the chamber under the rammer? I assume that you had to muscle it a bit before turning the cylinder?

@vulpixgrant11 жыл бұрын
You should have been using the Remington 1858 New Army. It has slots between the cylinders that you can safely rest the hammer in between just like the modern North American Arms mini revolvers. Then you can load all 6 safely without worrying about a bang when you don't want one. Nice video. But where's the fun in this! You got to get your hands dirty it's part of the fun. Clean up afterwords is a total B*&@#% though.

Cigarette papers DO NOT burn up completely and leave quite a bit of chamber residue. Do the nitrated papers in your video leave any paper residue in the fired chambers or do they burn up completely so that you can reload without cleaning the chambers?

Duelist1954, making nitrated paper is not difficult but it is hazardous. What about soaking the cartridge paper in a strong saltpeter solution and drying it before making the cartridges? Would that make a safe cartridge?

I was told that conical bullets aren't as accurate as ball in modern percussion revolvers because they don't have progressive rifling which has an increased rate of rotation further down the barrel compared to the modern rifling which is continuous ratio rifling. Is this true? I ordered a Uberti .44 3rd Model Dragoon and was wondering if I should buy a ball mold or conical mold? Thanks guys
