Compression ignition would also be an interesting method for detonating the second/primary charge. As the air in the barrel gets compressed, it also becomes super heated. I wonder if the second primer is even needed for this to still function. I'd be willing to bet a simple pin hole covered with tissue paper acting as the wadding would do the trick.

I wonder if the compression from the bullet moving towards the breech would be high enough and reliable enough to ignite the powder, since its basically acting as a fire piston. Then the second primer could be eliminated.
@doomdave475
@doomdave475 3 жыл бұрын
While I'm unsure about this, but the heat from the compression most likely isn't enough to deflagrate the whole load, if I recall correctly, the reason for why there aren't many large rimfired cartridges is because the jetlance from a normal primer is needed for the uniform and more complete ignition of the propellant, this is something that isn't achievable with a rimfired primer. But this largely just an educated guess, and I'm not sure about it.

unfortunately igniting the solid grains of powder with hot air would require an exposure time much longer than what is available. I actually tried doing that with a springer airgun modified to reach very high compression ratios, and was never able to ignite any commercial propellant (smokeless or black powder of different grades). An atomized/finely divided fuel is required, like cotton wool, but I haven't tried that.

I once thought about making a type of ammunition that used a friction tube such as used in the early days of breechloading artillery 'vent sealing tubes'. These used a small copper ball between the match composition and the rest of the priming chain. There was a tapered chamber that admitted the flame from the match composition, around the copper ball / tapered annulus into the rest of the powder train. When the main propellant charge turned into gas it hammered the copper ball into the tapered chamber until it sealed. I never got around to this. Never seen anyone make a small arm like this. It would be fun to play with.

I feel like this has potential for 3d printed firearms. In 3d printed firearms, the biggest limiting factor on power is the need for a secure breech lock, that plastics just cannot provide. This thing does not have a breech lock. Theoretically someone could make a full auto assault rifle that uses these cartridges where the only metal part is the barrel.

One can build a recoilless rifle: 1. Barrel with both ends open 2. Fire hole or cap nipple in the middle 3. Load one bullet so it doesn't reach the fire hole 4 load powder into end opposite first bullet. 5. Load 2nd bullet to trap powder 6. Ignite powder This results in the bullets being pushed out both ends. If one bullet is heavier it will cause the lighter bullet to traveler faster

It would be an extremely simple self loading gun, although you're just replacing a complex firearm with complex ammunition Also having your magazine right next to the muzzle is probably a bad idea. so I just stumbled across thischannel and I gotta say it's this idea is amazing... and amazingly unnecessary, however it's seems perfect for what I had in mind for some time and that being a use of fuel for propellant like thermobaric bomb, the obvious problem being mixing fuel with air but in this design is almost given, the cartridge would require some major tweaks, but is great step forward for the concept, I'm aware that such an idea is full of problems and I most defenitly don't know wether fuel can even be a viable propellant in an modern firearm, but still it seems very tempting to use something with higher energy density also nice videos

@mfree80286

This is actually how old chronography was accomplished... as long as you add a mechanism that instantly marks the disk at the moment of firing (things like charged capacitors that fired a coil and arced against the paper, set off when the bullet broke a foil strip leaving the muzzle) then you can calculate the timing of everything afterwards.

It can be timed to the milisecond with an arduino. The initiators being christmas lights, it can be set off by just the arduino. This could be the cheapest "boom for the buck". A termobaric bomb. After watching this a second time, a thought occurred to me. Wouldn't it be easier to use a small packet of liquid engine coolant to create the shaped charge instead of a ballast? Then no deflector is necessary, and you simply need to modify a grill lighter or some other device to allow the gun to function with the pull of an electric trigger.

What I'm picturing is something like a Saran (or other thin plastic) wrapped cap of fluid inside the shrink-wrap casing ahead of the first charge...is that accurate? I wonder if something easier to produce, like a wax cap, would do the same thing? The heat from the stage 1 charge would immediately deform, if not completely melt the cap on the way out.

That would be just a different form of ballast. There is nothing to gain by using a liquid.

@@timhofstetter5654 The liquid would provide weighted resistance when the initial shot was fired, and would dissipate to clear the path for the bullet. Liquid is used for to create shaped charges for demolition and breaching.

@@flyboymike111357 That it is. Because... liquid is easy to transport as a "massy" bulk material. You can carry a five-gallon bucket of water by hand all day to make up one ton of ballast high on a rocky hillside. Try to do the same thing with a solid object, though. A benefit to the use of solid ballast is that it's very, very easy to reuse. Liquid ballast is not. You can carry the same solid ballast around with you for months, using it thousands of times. If you use liquid ballast, then you need to carry a LOT of it around with you. Packaged.

would this be a machine gun since it fires two bullets per one pull of the trigger?

I don't see any trigger pulling going on. One light of the fuse, maybe...
