I think this solves one of the biggest issues with instax cameras - crappy lenses. Also, this would be amazing to use on a portrait shoot. The subject/model will get to see/keep something from the shoot day which for me makes a huge difference.

Need a ND filter to really use bigger aperture. At ISO 800 @ 1/500 bright day, I cannot shoot aperture smaller than f/11. and Instax film. Once you overexposed over by half stops things start to look washout.

also this, as well as a very good learning tool, it also allows you to test a new camera, lens, etc, for light tightness, when you are unsure, or to check if the shutter needs servicing, and to confirm the "dance" before you go whole hog into an expensive emulsion. also if you need to 'give the camera to someone', aka for a "try before you buy" loaner, this allows some success, not having to learn the film holder side of things, and making those mistakes!!; so good for the whole LF community in general, as the more 'we' recruit to this hobby, the more voices to yell at Fujifilm, Kodack, and IILford to keep them making cameras, film and darkroom stuff to ensure the endurance of LF into the future.

The day it was announced, I put my money down. When it was available, I shot literally hundreds of the old 5x4 peel-apart, and when that was discontinued, I used the FP100 pack film, until it got stupidly expensive. This thing is going to be so much fun to shoot with when it arrives!

I have one of these backs, plus one in Instax Mini that I hobbled together for my RB67. I love shooting Instax with good quality glass! What it lacks in dynamic range and exposure latitude it makes up for in fun and instant memories. I keep some pre-cut sticky magnets on hand to put on the back of "keepers" that end up on my fridge at home. Priceless. Regarding exposure, I have found that I get the best results metering Instax at ISO400 in most situations, and that seems consistent with your results. Great video, thanks!

These all look great out of the box Kyle! At first I thought is was okay and then seeing them again on your channel made me think that I may possibly want to go out and purchase this system for a 4X5 format camera! I loved shooting my LandCamera 250 when FujiFilm was producing it and those that went out and bought it out while selling it for some outrageous prices! It left a bad 'taste' in my mouth! This is probably the next best thing I will ever get to shooting polaroid ever again! Unless LomoGraph ever tries to reproduce the peel apart film again! Hahaha! Love your Channel and your Videos. The Pictures are super nice, great color, scene etc. I guess the LomoGraflok solves a high problem with 4x5 Cameras or analogue Cameras in Generel. If you make a Picture from a Model they don't know the End Results or how the Picture will look like. Before you shoot an 4x5 Film you can shot with LomoGraflok before and this will save you i guess from Crappy Images.

In June I shot an image every day on instax wide film in my Toyo 5x4. I hand made a holder out of old sheet film to keep it centred in a dark slide, loaded it in a dark bag and ejected via an instax wide camera to process it. This certainly looks a lot easier. I would echo your sentiment about exposure latitude though, this stuff needs an incredibly precise exposure to look good, within a third of a stop I would say.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, definitely need to nail the exposure. You’re probably right with the 1/3 stop.
@derricksansome236
@derricksansome236 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Moofy, your process intrigues me. In a dark bag are you removing a sheet of Instax film from its cartridge, placing it in a dark slide and then following exposure replacing it in the cartridge, placing the cartridge in the Instax camera, and then firing the camera to process the exposed sheet?
@iNerdier
@iNerdier 3 жыл бұрын
Derrick Sansome yes, precisely. It needs something to hold it in however, given its smaller than the usual sheet film size.

@iNerdier
@iNerdier 3 жыл бұрын
Derrick Sansome practice a lot before you start shouting and get a rhythm for how everything fits. Having an empty cartridge to put exposed film in helps. You will invariably shoot some the wrong way round or eject some upside down until you work it out. Oh and cover the lens on the instax when ejecting!

My fridge full of fp100c (and b) is going to be empty at some point. I don't use it to make actual pictures - I use it to validate exposure details. So the question I have for you is - is the Instax film really good enough to give me those fine exposure details? My granddaughter has an Instax cam and I am pretty skeptical that it will - though obviously I have not shot it with a good lens and full control over shutter speed and aperture. So after having done so - what is your take?

That’s tough to say. The latitude is on is oily quite narrow. I’d say it would give you a good general idea, but may not be the best for nailing specific tones.

I am assuming so, but would you get much much more quality photos with your 4x5 camera vs a instant camera? Or is this strictly for setting up test shots for a 4x5 shoot?
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, instant shot on a 4x5 camera will likely have more potential from a quality standpoint because of the glass. But also you’ll have a lot more control and creative options. But when it comes to quality, the film obviously has limitations.

OK I get the whole instant gratification thing, but that's what digital is for. It's also clearly "cool", and will increase a persons "Street Credibility" no end.. According to Fuji the image is 62x99mm. If someone needs a cheaper way of learning to use a 5x4 camera, buy a 120 roll film back for the camera that produces 6x9cm images. then load it with the colour reversal film of your preference. The image will be as near as makes no difference the same size. I'm betting it will cost the same, perhaps be slightly cheaper, and there's a good range of different films to choose from. It's just as possible to scan the images. If you use a negative film and you can even go into a darkroom and make a print!
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Neil, how about it's just a fun tool to use that some people enjoy? Not sure what you're talking about when you say it's clearly 'cool' and will increase 'street cred'. No one ever said anything about that... Totally fair if this isn't for you and you're not a fan of the idea, but doesn't mean it should be replaced by something else. The more options available the better as everyone is going to have different preferences. I personally really enjoy the back and will be buying one. As for a 120 back for learning, that's a great idea and option as well. And yes, a 6x9 negative would produce beautiful results.
@neilfulcher9298
@neilfulcher9298 3 жыл бұрын
@@KyleMcDougall the "cool" and the "street cred" were jokes! Most old men like me who were brought up on film photography were pleased to get rid of all the toxic chemicals when viable digital cameras came along. That said I still use my film cameras occasionally. Back in the day I never saw the point of consumer instant film photography. The quality of the image wasn't as good, it certainly wasn't archival, and was expensive. The only advantage I saw was the ability to give photographs to your friends at parties and the like. Commercial photographers used cameras with interchangeable film backs. They could use it to check exposure and composition, (and appease the art director). As an amateur I could never afford that, and I didn't need it anyway. I looked at the manufacturers website, here in the UK, by the time I add shipping, Import duty, and local taxes I won't get much change from £200. On my budget that's expensive fun. If I could rent one for the weekend, that would be a different matter. All of that being said, I'm still grateful that you've made the video so I can decide for myself.
@KyleMcDougall
@KyleMcDougall 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, in the end, it's definitely not a product for everyone, but that's how it goes with most things in this world. I may like it, you may not, and that's all good. I'll be buying one. But I agree with you, it's not a cheap investment, and could be considered expensive fun to some. I enjoyed it enough that I'll be making the investment. :)

I think it is very early to be showing this given that the bad isn't scheduled to be available before April 2021 and the chances of it being done there are poor. They give out this prototype to get channels to hawk the product for them. It should be made clear in all these advertisement for non-existent products that they are just in prototype stage and not available to the general public.

Hmmmm.... definitely not 'hawking products in an advertisement' here. Just testing out an exciting new product. I wasn't paid to make this. Also, I mention in the video that this is a pre-pro model. Also, curious why you think the chances of this being out in April are poor?

I have had three of these Instax wide lomograflok backs and all had to go back. I shoot one shot and it spews out 5 sheets of film. Apparently they know about it and there is a problem if these backs get cold. and it does not get better when it heats up. Seriously why sell these when they know there is a problem. I purchased mine from the Linhof shop and they are embarrassed about it. Seriously good idea. Seriously shit product. I spent a fortune converting my camera to take this back so I have to hope that eventually I will get one that just works as it's supposed to.

There are other people making Instax Square backs for the RB67 and RZ67. The 62x62mm image fits well on those cameras. No one made a 4x5 back adapter for those cameras! Maybe you're thinking of the Quadra back for 4x5 sheet film that looks like a modified Polaroid 545 back.
