In this quick video we discuss an organizational system for small hardware or small parts. In my home office, I have a couple of 3D printers which produce parts requiring small hardware. I have a system to organize these parts today but I wanted to take it to that next level.
To accomplish this I 3D printed a variety of boxes that will be nested in a drawer which will make everything neat, tidy, and visual. You don't need a 3D printer to get the same results! There are small bins available for purchase which would accomplish the same thing.

Ideas for improvement: When grabbing for small parts out of small boxes, your hand naturally scoops the floor then up the near side wall. For this reason, the angled wall with the label should go on the far side wall. The box’s floor should have a full radius like a cash register drawer to easily allow the parts to transition from the floor to the near side wall when being scooped out.

I've been adding that radius to the front and back inside lower corner of a few bins that I have made just to be catch all bins. Love it for getting those small pieces off the bottom of the bin.

Awesome and thanks for the link for the bins. If you ever have bins like that you don’t need to remove you can hot glue them in place. I’ve even hot glued the back row in keeping the front loose for removal. Again, thank you for the hard work on these videos and sharing your design.

This is the best way to organize, so far. I've watched all other's video but I, too, hate opening the plastic boxes! They add friction to my workflow, when I just want to locate and get to the parts. This is so far the best way. Ikea Alex is also great.

Freedom Units lol. Great job! I am actually in the middle of a very similar project with 3D printed organizers and came across your video as I am nearing the end of my build lol. I love the flexibility of the 3D printed storage, and the ability to print more as the need arises. I had considered paying a company to injection mold my design, but I could not justify giving up the flexibility of printing more whenever needed. Keep up the great videos!

I like the boxes, but putting a grid system on the bottom and on the bottom of the drawer would be a good idea. What I mean is, I saw someone who had a system that kept the boxes from moving when you opened or closed the drawers even if one of the boxes wasn't there. The idea being that you might take the whole box out and you wouldn't need to worry about closing the drawer too strongly. Besides that, good organization.

This is funny. Just watched this video for the first time, 4 years after it was recorded. I just did the EXACT same idea, but my drawers are black. Instead of the boxes you used, I went with Zack Freedman's Gridfinity boxes and grid, glued the grid to the bottom of the drawer with a few blobs of silicone, works a lot better, and a bit less work since you dont need to futz with posterboard or foamcore. Additionally because of the grid, I can use different sized boxes as well.

Great video! I was trying to come up with some better organization for almost the exact same issue. Tons of M2/3/4 Cap/button metal/nylon screws/standoffs each with a dozen different lengths. Currently all sitting in a ton of tackle boxes. Looks like my Prusa MK3 is going to get a workout starting this weekend.

I have the same ikea cabinet and wish that they were full extension draw slides. I have a similar setup, but also use kaizen foam to put my bench tools in. I have to put a spacer piece at the back of the foam for the 30% of drawer that is unusable. My OCD wants to replace all the draw slides....but I think the boxes are a great idea and calms my OCD....but that 30% is a bugger.

Great project, Travis~! I'm going back to rewatch your videos with 3D printing content, especially the printer build/assembly, since I just ordered my Prusa MK3S+~!! I'll be absorbing all that I can in the 5-week lead time that it takes for the printer to arrive. Have to figure out the type of enclosure that'll suit my needs the best, as well as storage for associated supplies. I'm stoked~!! As far as modeling goes, I've been using SketchUp since it came out, so I've got a bit of a head start, but I definitely see where it's different than modeling wooden projects. If you have any newb advice for getting a jumpstart in modeling, then I'd love to hear it. I've created accounts with Fusion360 and TinkerCAD, so I'll be dabbling in both for now. Thanks~!!

Loving this, I would have angled the back of the boxes so they taper down lower than the label from the box behind , just so it is easy to glance what you are looking for. The back of the box kinda hides the labels at a low angle. Is that soldering iron heatsert jig/press 3d printed or purchased? I am starting to use inserts more and more and that would be a great addition to the workshop. Really jealous of the setup too

How does the unit cost (materials/consumables only) compare to the Schaller boxes? The custom nature of the printed ones is nice, but I have six 8-drawer Lista-style cabinets with a total of 48 36"x24" drawers, so the incremental cost difference of the 3D-printed boxes might add up to be significant vs. the purchased option.
