Universal Technical Institute, Inc. (UTI) is a for-profit nationwide provider of technical education training for students seeking careers in entry level automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians.
Through a campus-based school system, the school offers specialized technical education programs under the banner of several brands, including Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Motorcycle Mechanics Institute and Marine Mechanics Institute (MMI) and NASCAR Technical Institute (NTI).
As of June 30, 2016, UTI had more than 10,000 students.
Universal Technical Institute provides technical training for students seeking careers in the automotive, diesel, motorcycle, marine and collision repair industries. i joined UTI in PA and i was there for 2 months. at the time, i was working in a friends shop with about 7 years of experience. i started with that ideas to get a degree and eventually work in a dealer and grow. one moth in, i met a guy that was a foreman from a dealer nearby home and recommended me and i was in and quit UTI. UTI in my opinion, is a great place, clean spacious well lit environment, staff are great, students are very curious BUT they teach a ton of unnecessary stuff. UTI promotes themselves as if they have the best education and they don’t. 👀 For those guys that are new and want to join a dealer with no experience. just fucking do it. apply. tell the managers that “you’re eager to learn and make money.” ive worked in chrysler, acura, landrover. and even at land rover those guy will hire people that don’t even know how to pop the hood. just be curious and always wanting to learn.

Guys think you need to have some special piece of paper to work at a dealership. I have heard plenty of stories of guys walking into a dealer, talking to the service manager and getting a job. Thanks for the comment and if are reading this looking for automotive training, please call your local community colleges, many have gas and diesel programs and it will be a lot less than UTI!

BundysGarage at the point i was really young i started working at 14 years of age and ignorant. you’re correct, a degree is unnecessary. once i learned enough i quit being a mechanic now i work for myself from home. 😬

BundysGarage i did it for 15 years. i left because i couldn’t stand stand being broke all the times. let’s be honest, an average mechanic nowadays don’t have money to invest, buy a home, or for a decent vacation. being a mechanic doesn’t pay. yes, i could open up my own shop and make more, but i see how shop owners live and that’s not the lifestyle i want, to be honest. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Right now I'm 20 years old and I'm looking to enter a great trade school I'm eager to learn and listen, plus I'm passionate about cars eventually I want to own my own mechanical business.

When I was a teenager, I fixed my broken VW on the side of the road with a handful of tools, turns out my distributor was messed up. Hitchhiked to the parts store and back and fixed it. When I was 21, my grandma, against my will, sold my recently deceased dads car, an Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal. The idiot wrecked it inside of a week and gave it back. I took over and went to a wrecking yard, got the parts I needed (front end parts, assemblies, mounts...etc) and repaired the car without any help. Over the years, I’ve always fixed my own cars. Just last week, I dropped my 2007 Silverado’s gas tank in my yard because the fuel line and evap line had holes. I got the parts, installed them, reinstalled the gas tank and then cleared the codes and it’s fixed. All done in my yard. Two weeks before that, I replaced the HVAC blower motor. A month before that, I did a complete brake job (pads, rotors, calipers) on my 2007 Mazda 3 HB. (I’d work on my own new Chevy Cruze but it’s under warranty so I leave it alone. That said, never been to school for mechanics but I absolutely love working on automobiles. I’d die and go to heaven if I had a place to actually have all the tools and equipment in a warm shop! That would be amazing! All that said, I can’t afford any mechanics school right now, despite I know I would do well, I just can’t. That would be awesome sauce. Someday.... maybe. Until then, I will fix my own vehicles (except if they are under warranty... why pay for parts when I don’t have to?)

Everyone has their opinion but some things for thought: -The owner said he asked UTI to send over some of their best.... they can’t legally do that. They can just send resumes based on criteria provided by the employer. -Chances are an independent shop is not getting “the best of the best”. Those graduates are recruited ON campus and usually already sucked up by strong employers. -What was not discussed was the starting pay, work/shop environment, career ladder, etc. -This owner said openly and fairly that his experience was with 3 UTI grads. -COMMON SENSE, some employers are great and some are not. Some UTI and trade school grads are great and, you guessed it, some are not.

JDlucky1 confused how he said some don’t know how to use tools We went to an uti opening the other day and they were dyno testing and started up a broken engine etc Seemed like they knew what they were doing... This guy might just have bad luck

Why I like UTI is the fact is that it was perfect for someone like me. I’ve always had a love for vehicles but I never had anyone to teach me. My dad, most of my friends, none knew anything about cars so as I got older I decided to go there to get that knowledge. No garage would bring me on with no experience at all other than changing my oil and changing a tire. UTI at least showed me what everything was and gave me hands on knowledge. The ones that “don’t work out” are the ones that only do the work at school. It’s like you can’t only practice a sport three times a week and on game day and expect to be a great player. You can’t only work on your “school work” at school and then just expect to be good. I went from knowing nothing to being pretty damn good if I say so myself thanks to UTI

Russell Ragland I go to uti in 4 months and have no experience on cars. Not even the fundamentals. Should I actually do it. I know that’s a straight forward question but I’m confused to go now and I’m on a time crunch

I've watched a handful of these videos, and as a fulltime UTI student I feel as though I should address the fact that most of the claims about the school being a poor choice are false. only about 30% or less of the learning is done out of books, since you have 3 weeks to pass each class, everything is hands-on when it comes to majority. I've found that people who attend and show up to class, actually taking the school seriously do very well. My campus has a BMW instructor who is an employee of the brand not the school, he did his initial learning only a handful of years ago at UTI and has since been promoted all the way from quick tech, right out of working in a dealership. That said however, if you show up to attend UTI and you dont take it seriously, dont pay 100% attention, or even miss an hour, it will be very hard to be on track with everyone else. Guys who talk about having dropped out within 2-3 months, typically fail out in realty simply by missing 2.5 classes and exceeding the limit on infractions for attendance.

I remember almost going to UTI in Phoenix, AZ. Drove cross country from the Midwest to check it out. Went to every dealership during the summer of 2008 in Avondale to get a job while attempting to go to school. My mistake was giving them a resume with a mechanic background with UTI listed as a potential college. None of them would hire me as a mechanic, only a lot porter. I took the job because I was desperate for a job at the time. Turns out that I was too young to get a student loan without having a cosigner. There was nothing I could do other than pack up and head back to the Midwest. A year later, I quit being a mechanic, and went to school for engineering. Best life experience I've ever had, chasing a dream only to be let down big time. I still work on cars, but they are mine and I can afford it.

Some training is definitely to learn the techniques to be a good mechanic necessary I am a master tech , I have learned hands on with master tech during the start of my career .its never easy but nothing is impossible to learn I knew nothing about cars years ago now I can work any cars foreign, domestic and Asian.Never stop learning ......

@@kvngdalton9864 not necessarily just because you work on high end stuff doesn’t mean it’s a nice environment what if the pay isn’t good, what if he’s a shitty boss to have, what if the shop itself is a mess or hot or just not a good vibe. The type of cars you work on doesn’t determine the quality of the shop environment

Haha this is what my team lead told me I wanted to be a technician and I straight up told the technician team lead that I had very little experience but he really didn’t care he liked that I was a hard worker and I was willing to learn so he took me in as a lube tech and trained me. I’m 100% I was a pain in the ass to train in the begging but once I got the hang of it I’ve been getting the most flag hours non stop for the past 4 months & now he put me into online classes for Toyota and once I finish that I’ll be a line tech and that’ll be completely new type of game, so moral of the story is work hard, mind your business, and people will notice.

As someone who's into cars, but has absolutely 0 hands on experience, I honestly would love to learn from this guy. I have that "Curious, want to learn how things work" attitude. I currently work in the food industry, as cooking is another childhood passion. And I'm still ofc learning things, better way to do them. I try my absolute best to come into work everyday with a positive attitude, help out whoever needs help, and have that respectful, go-happy attitude. But I also love to give suggestions on how people could be trained better etc. Would love to learn and work from this man.

When you say you’ll add a picture after the interview, it would be more effective to just add the picture, keep the audio of the interview still going, and then fade out the picture after a few seconds.

I’m not a fan of UTI but I gotta say they’re not gonna send their “best guys” to an independent shop they’re gonna send their best guys to places like bmw, Mercedes, Jaguar Land Rover, places like that people who they might send to an independent shop might be decent guys or just average I’m sorry to say it but for what you’re most likely offering your most likely not getting top quality guys

Help, im 17 years old, in junior year in high school and we recently had a spokesperson from uti come in and explain to us about the school. But then im over here watching these videos, and then i lose interest, does uti actually make you come out the best or community college is the way to go?

If you want to come out owing $35,000 dollars to the federal government, go to UTI. Otherwise call around to local community colleges and see if they have an auto program you can strand.

That community colleges take for ever , you go through other courses and take forever to do the study i want to do, like me, i want to do diesel technician, and i want to learn and get done fast, like uti its fast but i wanna know if i will learn everything or going to a trade school or community college or uti has it? And yeah 35k is a lot , but is it all that bad the way they put it?

You could try joining the military and become a diesel mechanic, get paid to learn the trade than you get to actually do work with on diesel engines. By the time your out you’d be an expert on diesel mechanics and heavily experienced.

Community college or tech school that's affordable is where it's at whether you learn about engines in UTI or John dough community college and engine is an engine look for good education that doesn't cost you a fortune because in the end employers care about the person they hire and pay less attention to what school you attended. What good is it if you go to school graduate and don't know how to do the job? All you did is spend money and gained nothing . Just a thought.

You can train someone but that someone has to have the desire to do it. If the passion for the trade is there then they are easier to train.

I need your expertise.... I have a 2001 Taurus that I am on my wits end with. The brake pedal sinks to the floor. I have replaced the master cylinder twice...Advanced Auto, after market......Still goes to the floor. All the brakes calipers, rotors and brake lines have been replaced! No Codes on the ABS. I have a Launch X431 pro Mini Scanner. I have pulled the ABS and tried to clean in Ultra Sonic and blown out. Activated the valve via scanner seems to be alright No Codes for the electronics Module. I must of did a full bleed 10 times now....Still goes to the Floor?????????? WTF could be wrong???????

Quick question, did you replace the brake booster? Was it part of the master cylinder? Are you sure you have vacuum at the line going into the brake booster?

@@bundysgarage No I didn't replace the booster. I will get back to you after checking for vacuum. The Brakes can pump up but then will still sink to floor???

Check the brake booster. Sometimes the seal between the master cylinder and the brake booster with go bad and suck in brake fluid which will in turn cause a low brake pedal.

Can someone help me. I just graduated highschool 3 weeks ago and I’ve had a representative speak highly of the school. I seen the courses they offer and the program length and cost. I want to know if this school would actually be beneficial or would a job at a dealership be better? I know a lot of different things about cars and the theory behind it. I’m torn between going to school or getting a job. Any insight what so ever would help.
