I feel your pain on this. My home has a 32x48 uninsulated shop in Eastern Idaho and I’ve been wondering what to do for heat. I work overseas but the plan is to retire next year and start rebuilding the stuff I’ve accumulated over the years. My floor is not set up for hydronic but the house is. Thought about evacuated solar tubes to a tank like your follow on video but run the hot water to a ceiling mounted radiator and fan to push out warm air. I can tell from watching your video that it’s not going to work. The house has a natural gas boiler but I’m not sure how far the main line is from my shop. There’s a good shot that the main line runs to the front of my property next to the road with a lateral going to the house. If that’s the case my shop is located closer to the road and might need a 40’ dig to get to the shop. If I had tubes in the slab I’d go gas boiler but now I’m thinking a burner of some kind and a carbon monoxide alarm system. That or buy a bunch of coal with enough wood to fire it off. Haaa. For insulation I’ve been thinking about closed cell spray foam over the years and getting trained up to buy my own rig and spray the shop. I have some trailers I’d like to spray as well but trying to justify owning my own rig versus hiring someone is up in the air. Areas I’d like to spray in the house as well to get the R value up there even though it probably isn’t needed. Thanks for the video. One of my toys is a 1968 Chevy C-30 that I’d like to go over, turn it into a pizza truck. Haha latest crazy idea that doesn’t make any sense. Cheers and have fun.

Maybe look at an inferred system fired off on Natural Gas. I have a good friend using that type of system and is very happy with it. At least until he kicks on the fan in his paint booth, then the heat gets sucked right out. But it works nice the rest of the time.

Look into a Gen-set from an over the road Semi. I had ours plumbed into the main engine cooling. We used an electric heater to heat the cab when parked with main engine off. The harder the generator worked for electric, the warmer we were. (We had a night that was actual -35 degrees Fahrenheit with 50 mph winds for an insane windchill. We slept in total comfort. This can be called a hybrid system. In the morning the Semi engine was 150 degrees as soon as we started, so we had immediate heat. Suggest if you'd do this, run one or two water heaters powered by the gen-set & use all the waste heat from the generator to maintain heat. These gen-sets use about 1 gallon diesel (use off road) for 3 to 5 hours run time & are very reliable. They can run many thousands of hours with minimum maintenance.

Awesome video. Thank you for such a complete analysis of your system. As a side thought, if you ever find a larger water tank, say a 60 gallon one, perhaps replace the one you are currently using. It may save you some electricity as it will have more thermal mass and may recover sooner. Of course I don't know, just giving a suggestion based on my supposition and not on actual facts.

I believe in calling water heaters hot water heaters. I have done that since I was a child. For those of you that get bent out of shape about it, it actually is a hot water heater. The water in it is already hot and when the thermostat drops the "hot water" is being heated. So get over it.

a few things: 1. FYI, it is more cost effective per unit of heat to install PV panels and have those run a resistive heater than buying the vacuum-tube solar-thermal things. as a bonus, you can leave this system installed and just run it from the solar. 2. a single-zone mini-split with low temp (XLTH/Hyper-Heat/Aurora/etc.) isn't that hard to install and will give you about 4x more heat per unit of electricity, and even on the coldest (-15F to 5F) about 2x more heat per unit of electricity.

I’ve honestly been looking at that exact system, and you may see more about it as we approach winter. Thanks for the comment!
@Bob9961
@Bob9961 Жыл бұрын
You shared usable, real world information. Much appreciated! A couple observations. Having essentially a second thermostat switch off the pump (allowing the fluid inside the water heater to return to max temp?) is perplexing to me, because, all the while, the in-floor tubing is cooling down (and also not heating up), without any perceptible benefit. That lost heat takes time to recover, basically compounding the wait for a comfy shop. If the goal is to get the shop to a target temp as soon as possible, I would think letting the fluid flow continuously through energized heating elements in the water heater is the most efficient way to bring the system up to temp. Also, I think your energy cost is very high for a typical shade tree mechanic. Lastly, I think it's petty to criticize people for saying "hot" water heater when it's literally a heater that makes water hot, but I can go either way on that.
@AllisonCustoms
@AllisonCustoms Жыл бұрын
You hit on a point it took me a few days to think about and solve. The water heater (and now the solar) are always on. The two 5500 watt elements can support about a 25 degree temperature rise all of the time. The solar (on a good day) can keep the floor at 60F and heat the tank up to 165F to then help out the water heater overnight. My next step will be figuring out how to get the place up to 70F consistently and hopefully efficiently. I think my first big expense to that will be getting the rest of the concrete poured.

A pool air to water heat pump would cut your heating cost to 1/4 of what you are paying for electricity. Pool heat pumps would produce 120 degree F water and are cheaper than a domestic heat pump.

I have been looking into that exact solution. I originally started checking specs on the residential and commercial versions, but they are very expensive and it appears the pool versions will do everything I want. I just need to nail down the control systems that will tie into everything else I’ve got going.

It's fun watching the journey and you did a fab job on the install. You can't beat a 200 buck water heater can you? Well actually now you've proved you can - $600+ a month in electricity. The solar array to generate 600 bucks a month worth of electricity is gonna be large and very expensive. I can't help but think you'd be WAAAY better off just getting a250 litre all in one heatpump tank venting it's air in and out through the wall and hey presto you'll probably save 450 a month immediately in electricity. Then you can put 6 months worth of that 450 a month saving into a smallish cheap 5kw solar array which you can DIY will then completely power your heatpump during day - so now your talking only 30 - 40 bucks a month in electricity used overnight....

Please let me know if you think the heat pump hot water heater source will work in your setup. The cost ($1500-$3000) may end up being a good investment. Solar hot water would most likely be just as expensive, maybe more. The heat pump hot water unit will exhaust cool, dry air so that could be useful for something around the shop in the summer? Could you use a heat exchanger and heat water for dual use instead of having a closed loop? Anyway, great work.
@AllisonCustoms
@AllisonCustoms Жыл бұрын
I think a heat pump would work very well. However, a unit large enough to heat my space, was going to run over $6000 plus materials to plumb it in. Additionally it would also require another $1000 plus for the electrical hookup. This is still all cheaper than a solar system, but with solar I should have a near zero daily cost to heat the shop. We also have a pool, so I plan to loop in that into the system in the spring.

If you are considering a free standing air transfer heat pump HWH, then that is probably not a good solution. Because all it does is MOVE HEAT. In the process of creating hot water, it generates COLD AIR. If the heat pump HWH unit is in the shop, it will COOL the air around it and you are removing heat from the shop. On the other hand, consider a ground heat source heat pump. One brand was called "Water Furnace." Google "Carrier Geothermal Heat Pump." Have you ever seen a free standing heat pump hot water heater installed outside in the weather? Might work under a tin roof in a southern state, buy not sure about Ohio, NY, Michigan, or Dakotas.

3:10 You state the hot water heater has 11,000 watts of heating elements (2 times 5500W), so the maximum continuous heat output is 11,000 watts. It would take QTY (7.3) x 1500 watt bathroom space heaters to equal 11,000 watts. That's a lot of space heaters, but your shop is quite large. In the end, you are still heating with 100% electric resistance heat. Maybe in Canada, "hydro" is cheap, but in lots of the USA, it is dang expensive to use "strip heat." The electric HHW is a funky package of "strip heat" that makes hot water. If you live in the country away from neighbors, you might consider converting an outdoor hydronic wood boiler to burn waste motor oil, if you have a good source of cheap used oils. There are plenty of KZfaq videos of DIY waste oil heaters, but your insurance will deny your claim if you burn down the shop.
@AllisonCustoms
@AllisonCustoms Жыл бұрын
You’ve got a lot of good points. I’ve looked into waste oil boilers and nearly pulled the trigger on one back in September. The math says I would need about 1200 gallons of used oil per month to make that dollar cost out. I DO NOT produce anything like that amount of oil and I doubt I could source it easily. If I had to switch to diesel or vegetable oil the cost would be prohibitive again. So that works out to a no go. I working out the kinks in a solar system now (video to come out soon).

@@Garth2011 So much depends on your location and your energy costs. Building down South is likely very different than building in the Great White North. As a Canadian, with our long cold winters, I can confidently say that the return on investment is VERY fast with wisely installed slab and floor insulation. I have R10 in the slab, and R22 Roxul in the 2x6 24" C walls. You do not need to buy new foam insulation. I picked up 900 sq ft of used R20 4 inch Dow "blue" factory roof shiplap insulation for a great price, (about 30 cents square foot) and have used it in the basement walls, ceiling, etc. This heating season to fill our large horizontal propane tank...generally the largest one available for business or home use (1000 L to 80% capacity) was about $2650. Last year it was $750.

Sounds more reasonable to spend on getting the natural gas piped in...$7,000+ a year to heat the garage on electric is much. Most commercial plumbers, those who do plumbing of all kinds 100%, will want to solder vs. shark bite. Also, forced air or an airtight wood stove will be a less expensive alternative in heating costs mainly because you're not having to heat the slab and the ground below it. There are many options to heat a building...modern and old methods. Lots of times, old methods are best such as a wood burning airtight stove as all it needs is one vent to the outside for exhaust. No special expensive plumbing, pipes, fittings, valves, pumps using power and so forth.

That is where I was at last winter. If you have access to Natural Gas or are willing / able to put in a propane tank - a gas burning boiler will be the cheapest to operate. I almost purchased a heat pump last month, but when I ran all of the numbers for the install and the electricity to operate it, the cost and efficiency just didn’t make sense. So I bought a solar system instead. I’m waiting right now for the last few pieces and then I’ll do a video on the install. I may eventually swap the water heater for a heat pump as the back up but that will have to wait at least one more season. Oh, and to answer your question yes it really ran that much and I’m sure there were days on end that it never shutoff. And this winter they (the man) got an increase in the price for electricity. So I’m guessing I would have bills over a $1000 this winter. Hense the big purchase.

Cost me about 40-50 dollars per month. I think if I want it much warmer I need to increase the BTUs. BTW... It's a stand alone isolated unit. Ran automotive antifreeze and worked just fine.

bet your estimate on the water heater comes in somewhat cheaper. Remember water heaters run one element at a time. Second part is that once you have your slab up to temp 60 degrees it is not going to take nearly what it did to get you up to temps. So I would be interested to hear your running cost this season

The shop is 3800 square feet and roughly 72,000 cubic feet - it has R-40 stem walls below frost depth, R-19 walls and ceiling. Also, I have both of my WH elements running at the same time. I’m working through a solar system now and should have a video soon(ish). Here is what last season ended up like. @13:00 Anyone who told you to put a blanket around the water heater is an idiot. Um, you're intentionally trying to heat the shop with that water heater. Any heat you "lose" from not having a blanket on it is being "lost" into the shop, which actually heats the shop. Putting a blanket on a water heater is meant to keep the heat INSIDE the water heater. Do they not realize that you're actually trying to get heat out of it and into the shop? Wow. Do people even think before the nonsense pours out of their mouth? Lol.

It’s a cool project but that water heater is just not going to put out enough btu to heat the shop. Both elements running at 9000W total is 30,600 btu. Mini splits would have been a better choice. You could have had about 160,000 btu of heat for 9000W of electricity. Heat pumps are far more efficient then resistive heating. As a bonus you get AC in the summer.

Ok, I was talking about a conversation with an engineer from a PV solar company, and the “life” of the PV panels they were selling was estimated to be 18 years. The “life” he was referred to was that at the 18 year point (approximately) the solar cells have degraded enough so as to not have the efficiency that would continue to support my system requirements. Panels would likely need to be replaced at that point, the other side of that is that we would potentially have 18 years of technological advancement during that time and the new panels would have greater efficiency and/or “life” spans.

The hot water tank is NOT necessary....the slab IS the storage for heat therefore tankless system. But you MUST have loops no longer than 300 feet....before returning to reheat water. Please note NOT circuits BUT loops within the same circuit
