Welcome to Shop Talk, a podcast from the team at Autodesk Fusion where we catch up with designers and makers live from their workshops. Whether you're a Fusion fan curious about what our users are doing or simply looking for something to listen to in your own shop, we’re bringing you candid conversations with talented designers who pour their hearts and souls into their craft. In this episode, maker and Autodesker Jonathan Odom speaks with Charlie Pyott of ‪@PyottDesign‬ !
Charlie is an industrial designer who started his KZfaq channel to show people the behind-the-scenes process of developing functional devices. In this episode of Shop Talk, he shares his thoughts on industrial design as a career, the joys of 3D printing, and the sunk-cost fallacy in 3D modeling.

Yeah, and on your controller, when im designing stuff im not designing tolerances or details, im designing the concepts because depending on what material, technology, process, is going to be used everything changes, so really you want to have a solid base concept to build off of.

I use pen and paper to design things first, its really the best way, why, because when you go to sketch it in fusion I end up needing to look up a bunch of tutorials to figure out details of each step. I like what you say at 29:00 I thought of using clay with 3d scanners but for making game models, monsters etc, but never thought to apply that concept to handheld devices, I was just thinking about VR modeling and what is the actual benefit of that and thats really not ideal, it has the same problems as computer modeling imo, clay modeling is truly a better way to gain a solid starting point for your model than starting with a sketch or vr.
