This video is for apprentices of some one new to machining
there is also some tools that a seasoned tool maker might not know about
We don't all have the advantage of learning on-the-job in a real machine shop, so here are 22 machine shop tips and tricks I've learned that I think are worthwhile! must-have equipment

25 yrs as a diesel mechanic have taught me a few things too. Telescopic magnet, Mechanical fingers, finger drill holder. Bees wax for lube or temporarily filling holes and then melting it out when done. I have syringes that we get at the farm store for our horses and they work great for putting oil or grease in certain places without making a mess. You mentioned a small mirror, but at the dollar store I found a 12" plastic mirror with magnetic back that's meant for kids in a bath tub, but I mounted it to the upright on my mill so I can monitor the back side of my work (can use double side tape too). Just a few things I could add from the top of my head. Cheers

I'm a design engineer at a manufacturing company. They do have a "no cell phones" policy for the manufacturing floor. One day I was out there, using some of our engineering equipment and typing data on my phone. Someone gave me a hard time about having the phone out. Pretty much laughed and said, "if you want this product designed, I'm going to keep on keeping on." Nothing further happened.

Some of my students workplaces have no cell phone rules. They can’t have them on the floor they must be placed in their locker or left in their car.

Same where I'm at. Although some people get special permission to have Cell phones on the floor (management, engineers, captains, etc)... still causes problems with some people.

That was interesting video. It's information you only get from experience, you won't get 'in school' unless instructor goes 'off curriculum' (then gets called in to see education manager, 😲) Your ZEUS book is only slightly older than mine (1976) although I did get an updated one about 10 years ago with more metric stuff (that I've never used 😆). It gets used a lot ( once a month or so) mainly looking up tapping drills for metric threads, much quicker and easier than going online. I've never needed a mini precision grinding vice but ordinary mini bench vice has proved to be useful (plus, you can mount on hardwood block as a gift, made one for my sister with plaque, 'We all have our little vices' . She was in HR so it became a talking point😎

Interesting I am a gunsmith and the most useful tool I have is a dart - I use it for assembling triggers with slave pins before assembling them into the gun alot stronger than a dental pick - thanks good tips

The rolly papers are a good thing , i use mine to make fine adjustments to the tail stock when grinding .

I worked for a company that made carbide drill bits end mills and form tools for years, I like that custom cutting tool lol

I think it's more accurate to call it "telescoping," rather than "telelscopic" because that's the kind of thing I think about all the time whether I want to or not.

Like the insulator for the indicator. Didn't think about the small current going through the indicator which there is on the EDM. THANKS!

those EDM vices are great for grinding small mold inserts

that’s what I used to for back in the day when our area had mould making rumour has it next year will be our first year apprenticeship, class, for mold, making in a very long time thank you for taking the time to Comment It is much appreciated.

Man i know a lot been a machinist for 35 years BUT im still learning , the rolling paper works good but i Switch to aluminum foil twenty five years ago lol

see I’m open to learning I never thought of aluminum foil. I’m must confess I don’t even know how thick it is. The reason I like the rolling paper so much is because I can stick them to the back of the plate and they will stay until I set the work piece down thank you for sharing and I hope everybody reads this post. Most people only watch the video and forget to watch or look in the comments. There’s so many great suggestions in these. Thank you for sharing.

Glad to see I have most of these tools. I think you've answered my problem regarding my indicators loosing spring tension. I don't run edm machines but I do run higher end CNC mills. Color me ignorant but I don't get the 420 reference.

I have been machining for a little over a year i have bought myself a couple of things. But my buddy just left trade(20yr machinist) and he left me a fully loaded kennedy toolbox roll away middle box and top box i was stunned i still cant believe it.

Check your Drill chuck ARBOR and the JAWS on your Rohm Drill chuck .I have A few Rohm and Albrecht Keyless chucks and They all are Precision with very little to ZERO Runout . But , they MUST be handled Carefully and Kept clean .... If you DROP a Drill chuck , It will Most likely need to be trued up again Good luck and Nice Video : ))

That’s good advice Walter I was just surprised that the cheap chuck was perfect and the expensive chuck was out I actually owned the golden goose before I bought the expensive chuck I didn’t need it it was more of a want and I could afford it and it was still quite expensive and it was also a disappointment I always believe in buying the highest quality that you can afford because it shows pride and the type of tools that you own When I got the Golden goose I checked it right away because I was thinking the quality was not good but when I got the expensive chuck I didn’t check it for a couple of months because it Was the name brand that was supposed to be top of the line Lesson learned Thank you for the nice comment and also thank you for taking the time to comment it’s much appreciated Ray

@@shopandmath Hi Ray Yes ! Sometimes you get Lucky ... I bought a Used "central tools " 8 inch drill press ( made in China) a few years ago , expecting just to use it for deburring Holes , to my Surprize the spindle and chuck Runout was almost nill !! Wow I have since given it to my son to use in his garage .You simply get a golden goose "sometimes" as you have stated ! Cheers Walter ~

Rohm Spiro is the higher quality chuck. That Supra you have is pretty low end. I've heard that those Golden Goose chucks were really nice. I thought they were made in Taiwan?

That nitrided surface isn't exactly a coating, as it transforms the parent material. The longer it is in the oven, the deeper the nitrided surface is. If I remember correctly, 4 hours gets you 0,1 mm deep nitriding and 4 hours is kind of low end of the time spectrum. Point being, you just don't remove that much with simple hand tool in a lathe.

I have come into contact with many Rohm brand keyless chucks over the years.......all were junk. Albrecht chucks (also German) were always near perfect.
