We tried shopping at the amazing Asian grocery store 99 Ranch for the first time ever. We got an incredible haul and even had a little mini Asian candy mukbang at the end. We followed my friend Dan's shopping list at first but then ended up just getting lots of fresh fruits and veggies like boy choy and durian, amazing Asian snacks like Pocky, and of course lots of awesome sauces (ever had banana ketchup?)
What an amazing Asian supermarket haul!!!

Unlike the the Japanese markets, the Chinese markets are reasonable. Chinese people expect good quality for a reasonable price. Japanese people want the highest quality and will pay more for it. I've seen all Asian communities in 99 Ranch Market... especially the ones near universities. I've been seeing more Persians in 99 Ranch Market the last few years. 30 years ago, I was often the only white guy in the the store.

I love big asian supermarkets! I've heard of 99 Ranch, but I've never seen/been to one. There's an awesome, huge international grocery store north of Atlanta called Buford Hwy Farmer's Market and it's amazing. Largely Asian, but also has anything you can want in Latin cooking, African cooking and dang near any European. The aisles are just labeled by nationality. It's amazing and awesome. It of course has the fresh seafood and butcher counters like this place.

There's a 99 Ranch 20 minutes from me in Van Nuys CA (although the one in San Gabriel is MUCH better). My kids love the shrimp chips and Philippine dried mangoes, and jackfruit when it's in season. Their dragonfruits are always flavourless though, and their durians are shipped frozen, which makes them lose most of their potency.

It can be eaten, for instance, with a breakfast of fried/grilled fish or sausage (longganisa or chorizo), scrambled or fried eggs, and fried garlic rice. Hah.
