I heard that's a common tactic pickpockets use. They pretend to have been pickpocketed and scan for people patting their pockets to find out where they're keeping their valuables.

They same thing happened to my great grandmother. She had 10 sewing Machines and ran a shop. Once when she opened the shop early morning the top was missing in all the machine. Then they went to this market and bought all off them the theif had sold them at different shops they managed to find them all
