I dont know how you got on my algorithm about 8 months ago. We are so opposite. I have a high stress, coorperate job, little high maintenance, and dont cook, lol. I did, however, grow up on a farm in Ky... on paper, we would have nothing in common. I say this to say, I love watching your videos." i look for new ones every night as i finally slow down from the day. There is a peace and calmness that you bring. I watch the girl's to and i just love your family. I grew up and went to college and grad school, trying to stay as far away from the farm as i could. Your videos have made me pause and reflect on alot of how i grow up and how amazing it was, i think being from a small farming town there was a rush to leave Watching your videos makes me appreciate and long for a slower pace life and really has had an impact on me. Matt would make a good engineer. Have a plan in the mind and revise until you get it right. We were told , " engineers don't make mistakes, they make revisions " . In other words put your thought into an object and then make it right. Experience and information make it work. Experience comes with time, information comes from study.

Where is "Matt", when I'm in the store throwing bags like this onto the cart? Onto the cart is easy, but then from cart to car, out of car to where I'm putting at my house is the harder part. I only have so may "lifts of heavy items" in me for 1 day!

Tipper I love your enthusiasm for gardening. I grew up on a farm, too. We raised all the regulars, corn, beans, squash, (which we call the 3 sisters), tomatoes, watermelon, potatoes. My grandparents were amazing gardeners. My dad used a plow pulled by a mule. He had to strap it to his upper body and was constantly giving the mule directions. He would call out gee or haw and the mule knew which way to swerve. I miss those days so much. I now have little grow bags and buckets in my tiny backyard. My soil is awful and won't grow anything. I keep trying, though! I learn a lot from watching your videos! God bless you all.

My husband recycles non working refrigerators or freezers for raised beds. He removes the doors, shelves and the motor/coolant part of the back and bottom. Drills drain holes and lays them on cement blocks. We fill them with sticks, weeds, grass clippings, leaves, compost and old container soil, sometimes we add a few bags of fresh potting soil. Been working well for us.

You’re right Matt. You have to have the plan in your head before you can do it with your hands

I know that feeling when you sit down to a meal and know that you raised everything on your plate. 😊 Everything is so high and it cost a lot to farm, but it feels good to know that if you had to we could survive in hard times.

Whenever I have anything I want, or need to do I always look for a YT video on it, and so far I have found 100%. It's great watching you guys preparing to plant. My mother was the head gardener at my house. Daddy plowed, manured, harred and laid off rows then she took over. Daddy had his own tiny garden where he grew vegetables that people didn't normally grow in our area.

It’s called ingenuity and my hubby is the same way, he finds a way to make it work while I’m a more ducks in a row kind of person. I need it laid out either in my mind just so or on paper, lol. And my husband like your Matt is very good at improvising and making whatever it is work and look nice too. I want it to work, and be functional but being female I guess I want it to look nice also. 😝😊

I worked at Lowe's in the garden section through a third party company. Seeing that flat bed brought back some good memories.

You can burn the wood all sides and cut ends wire brush put together will last for years, makes it water and insect proof.

Matt’s plan is flawless, you have to go with the flow, that’s how you survive, just like cooking and canning, you make it to your liking 😎

My husband used 2×4's with some leftover roofing sheets to build a raised bed.We are going on our 3rd year, and they are holding up well. They even had a tree fall on them last year.

I’ve been gardening for many years and my favorite garden tool is a garden size wagon! Makes life so much easier when I have all my tools ,seeds,and additives for the soil!

I can’t wait to get out in the garden! We are going into our 3rd garden year here at our retirement homestead. We expanded the garden last year and will be expanding a little more this year as well. It’s worth every bit of hard work when you get to sit down to that great fresh eating! I love watching all of your garden projects!

Tossing those bags on the cart reminds me of the years we had a pellet stove for heat. The bags were 40 lbs each. I lived there by myself from 2020 to 2022. I was 61 to 62 and I hated hauling those from the store to the Blazer to the home. I now have central heating after 15 years.

Check out using the Japanese "sho shugi ban" treatment for the pine lumber. It is just burning the surface with a torch to preserve it. KZfaq has many videos on that.

I really enjoyed this video a lot! It reminded me of my wonderful parents and their garden and “truck patch” plot! My uncle had a farm on the east of our property and my dad’s aunt had one on the right. My uncle only bought his for the timber on it, as he was going to build a new home in a different area. Dad’s aunt had moved to a city several miles east of where we lived and left her farm for dad to use. Besides the cash crop, he and mom planted a big truck patch of vegetables. When the vegetables were ready for harvest, mom and dad certainly canned lots of delicious food!

You might want to fish some flat rocks out of the creek to stand on in the greenhouse on top of those white rocks so you don’t twist your ankle until they settle in the ground.Or some heavy sole boots.

Please tell Matt I have seen a hack on some shows I’ve watched. To cut that roofing material turn the blade backwards on your circle saw and it cuts right through it.

The oldest son's wife is pregnant and someone tells her shes going to have a boy because of the way she's carrying the baby. She didnt end up having a boy, she had triplets. LOL

I do nothing but raise beds because I don’t have any grass in my backyard. I have nothing but asphalt so I have those big big 65 gallon. I don’t know what they’re called a pots that were for trees. A friend of mine saw a business coming up and they were planning their trees and so she went and asked if she could have them pots so they gave her like 30 and she gave me about 10 so I have those tree those big old pots that I grow in. I do really well I also have, two wood raised beds. I do have a bunch of metal from a roof job that I want to do metal and wood this year as well and in my front yard. I have a lot of pots as well. Big ones I do have grass in my front yard which I just planted a fig tree today, but my backyard has snow no soil no dirt it’s all asphalt but I really enjoyed your video and you’re right you just do what’s best for you I was successful in making my own compost so those big old 65 gallon tree pots I end up turning them into compost bins. I have three of them so this year Has some. I have one of them that has great great compost with worms and everything and I will use that in one of my gardens. I did start seed planning some tomatoes and some peppers but I hadn’t been. I’ve been behind watching all y’all great homesteaders a lot going on over here you know life just happens at times but I’m so excited for the planning season now I’ll probably only gonna do spring and a little bit of summer, but not really and then fall I do better and fall and spring And summer I fight them darn bugs

I was wondering if using a food-safe polyurethane or marine wood sealer or even tung oil would protect the wood so that it wouldn't need replacing so often? I mean, it would, but would it prolong the life of the wood long enough to be cost effective? Maybe Matt would know the answer to that. Nothing better than just picked corn. When I had room to grow corn, I would literally put the water on to boil before I went out to pick it. It would be in the pot 5 minutes after it was picked. My father-in-law said maybe I needed to heat the water on a Coleman stove out in the garden; then I wouldn't need to pick it at all. I could just bend the stalk over and dip the ears into the water. 😂😂 I confess, sometimes I didn’t cook it at all. I'd just shuck an ear right there in the garden and eat it raw. It was so sweet. That fresh corn alone will be worth the effort you put into renewing Pap's garden.

Last season i planted in near bout everything i could get my hands on. Feed bags, 5 gal buckets, grow bags, spinach in swimming pools, potatoes in cardboard boxes, sterlite containers. I even added legs to two pallets to make tables to set my buckets on. Really helped with my back.

i'm 60 and less flexible, so i grow in 5 gallon buckets and 10 and 20 gallon plastic totes. i'm growing for myself only, so it makes enough for me. it may not look cute, but it's easy and works for me.

Im sure you have considered it but be very aware of deer. I live in an area with deer in Virginia. Growing up we had no deer at all and raised big gardens, but now we have to have tall fences just so we don’t lose it all to deer . When you mentioned the new garden I couldn’t help but comment about them. Anyway I love your channel and love Appalachia !

I'm a seat of my pants builder too. And if something goes wrong I throw a tool, maybe use a little sailor language, have a cup of coffee then go back and figure it out.

I'm 77 and I have always used treated wood, and I'm still kicking. The pine will last a long time as long as it doesn't lay in water. Upright or lying on gravel, it will last many years.

We have used cedar for some projects in recent years and have found the new cedar that is available doesn’t last any longer than other wood. You’re just as well off with the pine!

Ty for inspiration! A few years ago I tried to garden in my backyard! The squirrels had a hey day rolling around on all my plants!!! But guess what I had growing in my front yard near the porch? A stalk of corn😳that I didnt even plant! It grew 3 little ears. Then we got so much rain it didn't last. It was exciting for awhile!😅
