In the car community they call it "false patina". A legitimate rusty car with that perfect "old/ratty" look is "natural patina". So yes, people do want relic'd cars. lol

Voice-O-Graph....Myself and 2 other band members all stuffed into one of these on the Santa Monica pier back in the late 60's and did our rendition of Surfin Bird (Bird is the word)...Papa umm mah mah...pa pa pa pa papa umm mah mah....had the little booth a rockin'. Added another original track to the same record..."In my woodie at La Jolla shores" made up on the spot. One of the guys still has it...was great fun. These were originally used for Armed Forces service members to send a voice message home to loved ones when on duty far from home.

@@tdunster2011 those are expensive because they are vintage instuments that are probably over 50 years old and are collectors item's. I have a beautiful American fender Stratocaster that I payed about $700 dollars for. Plays, sounds and looks absolutely perfect. I have paid a lot more for instuments in the past but it doesn't make them any better.

I’m not so sure about relic guitars. I bought my LP custom new in ‘94, and whenever someone sees it they assume it’s from the 70’s. I earned the hell outta those dings, the wear, yellowed binding, once gold hardware, and snapped n’ glued headstock by playing who knows how many gigs over the years. Been in that shop many times over the years. GC here in Lexington has a Nash tele but I wasn't impressed all that much. Leo Fender was a really cheap guy they say and he would paint over sunburst finishes all the time. If I was going to invest in a boutique high end tele or strat I would buy one made by RSguitarworks out of Winchester Ky.You need to do an episode from their shop.

Alright, gotta jump in here. There's some pretty harsh comments, and unless you're from, or live in the great Bluegrass State, you may not know, or appreciate, how important Guitar Emporium is. Those in the know are quite aware it has the reputation as one of the finest guitar stores in the WORLD. Yes, I said "world." If you go there, take some time to read some of the framed letters of appreciation on the wall, or feel free to google former owner Jimmy Brown, and learn how Guitar Emporium started, or more importantly, who has, and does, shop there. I will reluctantly divulge a secret: If you know of someone being in concert in Louisville, chances are you may run into them as they most assuredly visit Guitar Emporium on the day of their show. Guitar Emporium is also known for their legendary staff who are famous in their own right. I know many, many Kentucky musicians who have grown up going to Guitar Emporium because it has served as their only access to see, hear, and play fine, vintage instruments. It's unique in many aspects, and smells good, too.

Whimsical Wade my experience was unless the staff know you they don’t care to bother with you. I walked out with cash in my pocket for a core PRS & never went back. All the pictures yellowing on wall may harken back to a time when their staff cared but I never saw it.

Almost everything is backwards in Kentucky! In Tennessee, there are no exceptions. All is backwards in Tenn. (and New Hampshire, too!)

Love your “in search of” videos over last few episodes. When I was much younger I could find good deals in pawn shops, but seems they know what they have anymore. I was also excited to see this indie dealer Guitar Emporium, as in my area recently it’s either Guitar Center or Pawn shops. Thanks for your time & effort to create such interesting content.

This is like the 4th video I’ve watched and about 8-10 different music stores- n -pawn shops these two squirrels have gone into and NEVER bought a thing..!!! They just fingerprint shit up and turn round and leave..!!! Just like couple 16 year old kids... 😆

Quilters are great for working musicians. I have one of their heads and modular cabs, altogether is weighs 19lbs and puts out 200 watts. I play in NYC so something like that is super handy. Haven't tried a Friedman guitar yet, really interested though

I can remember when I was very young...over 50 years ago, my grandmother had a 45 rpm record of herself singing. I believe it was recorded on one of those Voice O Graphs. Wish I had that record today!👍😎🎸🎶

I was shopping for a very long time to find the best guitar. All the shootout videos. You name it. Then I discovered Paul Reed Smith. All I can say is "WOW". Unbelievable. I started with a low-end, sold it. Got a PRS S2 model. Sold it. Then I found a 2018 CE 24 like new. Usually, they go for around $2000. I found this one for $1400! My advice would be not to sell yourself short. Go for the guitar that is going to be "The One". This one does everything from Les Paul to Strat to Tele and everything in between. I sold all of my other guitars. Don't need them anymore. Don't take my word for it. Go play one, please. They are beyond description.

I have had many PRS, and yes, they are great guitars. The CE24 with the smaller neck heels are the best.

Relics are for rich kids who don't have time to play. Mark Knoffler's '61 strat looks almost new. Those of us who were not born rich try to take care of our guitars.

I bought two guitars from this shop when I lived in Louisville. It was one of the classiest guitar shops I've been to outside of Nashville. Definitely a hidden gem of that region.

Have to say, I'm really enjoying your store tours, Brad! Perhaps at some point when you visit someplace out of state you could include a tour of the areas local guitar stores, see what's of interest on their walls. Brad, thanks for turning me on to Music Go Round in Louisville. We were coming back to Pennsylvania from a vacation in Nashville and spent a few hours in Louisville. I picked up a sweet 2003 Korean swamp ash ESP LTD 7 string for a good price. I went there looking for the Epiphone Coronet that was in your video a couple weeks ago, but it was gone. The gigantic mall by the airport is really nice as well! I stopped into Gruhn's in Nashville and played a $25,000 1952 Fender Tele. I definitely know the broke feeling lol

Very COOL! Thanks for this tour. Your buddy is very, very good gee-tar picker! So are you! I have to drive 200 miles to music stores of this level, so it is nice to watch someone show the stores around them. I live out in the sticks, but living in a metro area has it's advantages. Thanxz

Nice tin ceiling in the store. My late Dad recorded a record for my Mom in the Voice-O-Graph in a Record store in Trenton, NJ - probably in the ‘50’s. Really cool to see one again.

7:55 Bill Nash says his suppliers of necks also supply some of the necks for 'The Big Guys' so he can't put all these relationships in jeopardy by talking about suppliers anymore (he's competing with the big guys and they don't like that *so they pressure the suppliers not to sell to Nash.)* My '06 Nash is still is the era with Warmoth parts. You can still order their Boatneck or Roundback profile to replace your stock Fender neck, and even request a 1-3/4"nut width - unheard of since the '50s at Fender.

One lesson hard learned over years is what I call the "Epiphone Effect," which is the purchase of many cheap guitars and amps all the while saying "i cannot afford the real deal." Just something to think about. Been there, done that. Unless of course the cheap gear makes you happy, then all is well.

I hardly ever even plug in an electric guitar in a shop anymore. If it sounds and feels good acoustically, it's probably going to be good.

The Guitologist true! I saw that you guys remarked that the nash tele was louder, but the Friedman too my ears came through better. That’s probably to do with the camera picking one up better than the other the Friedman just seemed to have more ie I could hear the definition in your fingerings etc. but I defer to your opinion I obviously wasn’t in the room and they’re both high end builders. Keep up the good work love the vids. PS can you possibly suggest any resources on tube amp’s that cover more of a “this is why this circuit sounds better” like more of a commentary on design ie what makes a Soldano a Soldano, or a Friedman etc. I’m trying as a novice to get a handle on the “secret sauce” aspect. I understand the components but the magic of the circuit design, nuances, etc is hard to find. Sorry this is so long winded lol take care and have a great holiday!

Louisville? I bought my Larrivee in 1998 from FIRST QUALITY GUITARS in Louisville, by mail order. They had the lowest price anywhere, and I saved hundreds even with the duty.

This is my comment . At what point in time did Danelectro become High End. In the 60s and 70 s they were a kind of joke . Compressed cardboard bodies for Petes sake lol. Yes I know Jimmy Page Jack White ect . But really ??

Rickenbacker uses bubinga for there fingerboards, thats why the more reddish color. Id give my left nut for that brown Fender Pro amp. Those amps sound amazing . When loaded with JBLs they have the best classic Fender tone! Love that shop lotta nice stuff.

I have a voice o graph or similar record from 1943. It sounds like a family is going to send it to a relative in the war imo. Very hard to hear(super surface noise), but I transferred to digital and then messed with the eq to pull their voices out of the mix.

Loved that shop. Guy tried selling me that lg1 with the blue paint dot. Very over priced compared to craigslist shopping for vintage instruments. Got a 1966 gibson country western for 1,000 mint.

@@TheGuitologist ive got a 1964 randall 2x12 prototype amp made in the fender factory. Possibly handwired by Don Randall himself. Needs some repairs. Reverb quit, tremelo halfway works. I just feel it should sound better.

I had enough cash to buy a brand new Gibson.... then I played the auction game... Got 8 vintage amps, a mic and a bass.... and fixed them. Now I get to sell them... hopefully at a good profit... Already sold the mic, bass and 3 amps... so I'm close to the "in the black mark". Can I interest you in our Reverb 4th of July sale? LOL.

I like my Nash 62 Strat. The G string, however, sounds like a sitar so I need to get that fixed. I was playing in a band when I got it and just never had time. I have had 2 Nash P Basses. One came with a non-functioning truss rod. To his credit, I let him know and they fixed it immediately. I sold it and bought a Fiesta Red one that was awesome. I’m mainly a guitarist and I’m broke so I sold it. It had a Warmoth neck and it was perfect. Re the finish on that Tele, I think it’s a shout out to back in the days in England, when Hank Marvin and the Shadows were huge. He played a Fiesta Red Strat. They couldn’t get enough Fiesta Red Strats across the pond to meet demand so they over sprayed them in a red color. After a lot of sweating out surf riffs, that finish would wear off and the original (probably sunburst) finish would start to show through. I love that on the Nash website he had a list of rules for ownership and one was “no SRV licks.”

Those Nash Tele style guitars are WAY out of my price range but talk about a guitar that sounds killer. Playability and neck feel....it's got it in spades.

Brad, Friedman guitars are hand made by Grover Jackson in his shop just down the road from me in Laguna Hills, CA. He's a really cool guy and has a lot of great rock n roll stories!

@@TheGuitologist - LOL. You know the history of the finish? My neighbor had a real 1962 Fender Strat in Fiesta Red and as he wore off the finish at the upper bout it was sunburst underneath. Suhr is just recreating this and I understand it's not for everyone.

Im lucky to have grown up and still live in my home in Dallas right down the street from charley's guitar shop. Since the late 70's Ive always been able to go in their broke and play 50's LP's and Fenders. Theyre great people, always have been even post charley weir era's of ownership. Been to Europe, a lot and China, HK and inland and to New Zealand and everywhere you go if you check out the music stores and scene you'll see a Charley's guitar shop shirt. I swear its amazingly weird. People offer me money for my old ones all the time. heres what I know about old instruments built by luthiers that hand selected the right woods for acoustical resonance having been trained by those that made violins and other acoustic instruments,... theyre better than todays stuff.

@@TheGuitologist My guess is *Inside* *Daisy* *Clover* *(1965)* . Regardless, that's an good period movie set in the early 1930's to iirc late 40's. Nice Hollywood studio shots of her character in a booth singing to the film on the screen. Robert Redford is in it too. Not 'too much' romance. They are very high quality made but I kind of have the same thought. A copy is a copy and should come with a copy price. Use that craftsmanship and make something original

I love Guitar Emporium!!! Great store. That's so cool the voice o graph actually works. I always thought it was a conversational piece. Omg, I never even realized Victor Wooten was up on the wall. Seen him play at headliners 2 years ago. We were in the front row and it was amazing! Awesome video Brad and TJ. :)

Unfinished or Oiled necks feel great, but can't handle heat and humidity. Ask EVH's tech, replace necks often.

I wondered what about the left-handed guitar seen at 3:31 located just above the Suhr. I noticed it had an R on the tailpiece. Based on an Internet search it is a Rickenbacker guitar, most likely a 360 Fireglo model. Nice looking guitar but I suspect it would cost a pretty penny.

Rickenbacker has always used bubinga for fretboard wood, afaik.

Brad, how can you not LOVE the two-tone salmon/sunburst Tele? You must not know anything about "tone paint," man. Somebody obviously took great care to ensure that guitar has the best combination of solid and sunburst finishes that yields the absolute BEST tone possible! Hell, I'll bet that finish was applied by Billy Corgan, himself, probably in his own kitchen! XD

Love that Malcolm Young Duo Jet. If you ever see a Duo Jet like Malcolm's w/the side half dots on the neck & the Toaster T Pups for cheap let me know please. His started out w/two pups wine red then he sanded it down added a pup in the middle then took those out leaving just the bridge pup in. & the left over Bigsby trem parts on em.

I think the second guitar is a Japanese Teisco, pick ups are not original. Some of them have quite nice necks, usually with a zero fret.

Bridge and tailpiece look very Japanese, as does the neckplate. I imagine it would have shipped with gold foils, which may well have been removed in the past. Either binned when people considered them junk, or sold separately after Ry Cooder made them super-valuable and sought after.

@@samwalker7567 Agreed. You can buy new re-pro's of that Teisco bridge, with that pressed steel saddle, on e-bay for a very few bucks.
