Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Jawahar Lal Nehru, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. After Haryana and Punjab were split into two different states in 1966, both the states wanted Chandigarh as their capital. The Central Government declared Chandigarh as a union territory and decided to serve Chandigarh as a joint capital of Haryana and Punjab until a favourable solution was found.
