Indeed. Understand that the real threat is not the knife but the man behind it.

I've been told by a man, who actually DID defend himself a couple times from knife attacks, that the only way is to utterly focus on the weapon and the weapon hand. He said he would resign himself to being cut/stabbed and try to take control of the weapon as the first priority. He also agreed that you can train whatever you like, just keep in mind whatever you do could end with you dead in a second.

@@tomshepherd4901 Okay, so everybody has anecdotal evidence for this or that, but we can agree that in a thousand empty hand vs knife engagements, the knife is usually going to win. I grabbed a large balisong by the blade once and took it without injury. Mainly because the person holding it was hoping to scare me and was a complete cream puff. I wouldn't train a student to ever try that, and I was never advised to do that either.

@@xyaeiounn Yes, we can absolutely agree that knife vs empty hand is very one sided in favor of the knife. There was a recent video in which a group of professional martial arts instructors and practitioners suited up and tried to defend themselves against 3 rounds of a simulated knife attack. Not a single one of them would have survived. My personal philosophy is 1) maintain distance. 2) get something between you and the knife. 3) use any available weapon, preferably something with reach. 4) cover your vitals. 5) as soon as you see the knife or the person closes range, attack the most vulnerable target and disarm or clear distance. It's easier to attack a slow moving face or knee than a fast moving blade. Also, rock beats scissors. 😁

It's just a demonstration but in reality, that's not how it's going to work.

As a student of kempo I will say as much as I believe the art is incredibly effective there's a few things like this that I really don't like. We don't do this in my dojo

That is only showing you don’t respond to knife attack with complicated techniques, the only response is to intercept with distance control and super quick kicks and strikes and not wait for the attack to reach 50% completion because action is always faster than reaction. Better than teaching students knife can be fought against with flow like in arnis
