www.crosstrainingenduro.com It's tough being short. Any decent dirt bike has a lot of suspension travel, which means a high seat, which you means trouble any time you stop or need to touch the ground. As Graham Jarvis says "Going fast is the easy bit, it’s going slowly that will help you develop control." The top extreme enduro riders like Jarvis are so smooth and controlled that often you don't realise how difficult the terrain is until you see them flying past the less experienced riders. So cross training applies trials techniques to enduro riding for improved dirt bike skills. Let's look at all the things you can do in terms of riding technique, bike setup and bike choice.

Develop good balance skills and you will rarely need to put your foot down. What do all the world's best extreme enduro riders have in common? Almost without exception they are former trials champions who applied who have applied trials techniques to their dirt riding skills to tackle some of the world's toughest events - Romaniacs and Hells Gate. Practice riding very slowly, and even better learn how to balance at a standstill. This trials techique is extremely useful for short riders in tough terrain. If you are really serious, get into trials riding too - it will transform your balancing skills on a dirt bike. These vids provide an introduction on how to ride dirt bikes with our 70 free training vids. Many of these riding tips come from Graham Jarvis, Chris Birch and other top extreme enduro riders to form the concept of cross training - a blend of trials and enduro techniques.
Most riders sit far too much. Practice your full lock turns regularly, on smooth and rough ground, without putting a foot down. Learn how to dismount instead of crash. The rise of extreme enduro, endurocross and hard enduro events has led to cross training - trials skills applied to dirt riding on enduro bikes. Subscribe to this channel for endurocross training, enduro techniques and dirt bike skills. When the terrain gets too rough, learn to how to paddle with your legs, both standing and sitting on the bike. In some cases, these riding techniques may be enough. If not, then try setting up your bike to suit. Bike setup. We'll start with cheap do-it-yourself mods. As Graham Jarvis says "Going fast is the easy bit, it’s going slowly that will help you develop control." The top extreme enduro riders like Jarvis are so smooth and controlled that often you don't realise how difficult the terrain is until you see them flying past the less experienced riders. Seat mods. The easiest is modifying your seat. You can trim the foam down a lot lower. Then your bike still looks the same, but you sink much further into the seat.
So cross training applies trials techniques to enduro riding for improved dirt bike skills. The easiest change here is to increase the rear suspension sag as much as possible. This does negatively affect your steering geometry and handling, but many novice to intermediate riders say they are very happy with this mod, in combination with a lower seat.
The next step is a lowering link for the rear suspension, and again adjusting the front forks to match. Losing traction is a cardinal sin in trials riding and riders go to extreme lengths to ensure their tyres don't slip. Wheelspin and slides look great but in many cases for enduro riding but it simply means you are losing full control of your dirt bike. A very important safety issue: make sure your tyres won't hit the underneath of your fenders and airbox when the suspension is bottomed out.
The top extreme enduro riders will only lose traction deliberately in a small number of cases. Body positioning and weighting are fundamental skills in trials, and watching top trials riders is like poetry in motion. A key part of moves like this is the use of body positioning and weighting - choosing when to exert pressure on the pegs and when to de-weight or lift the bike up.
Cross training means you will almost always be standing on the pegs of your dirt bike and learning how to use your body weight and positioning to maximum effect to apply trials skills to your dirt bike technique.

Great vid. At 5'6" I understand the problem all too well. In my case, I ride a Husky FE350, I bought the factory lower seat, and had it lowered professionally by another inch. To be honest, I've noticed no difference at all in handling/steering geometry and would highly recommend these mods for anyone struggling. The increase in confidence is significant, which relates to more FUN, and that's what it's all about, plus less chance of get offs. I'm 54 so the less awkward get offs the better!

i've never ridden a lowered bike v4magic, but i suspect that any changes to the handling would have to be quite minimal if it has been done properly, and possibly only noticed by a top rider going hard... at our age i reckon comfort and safety take priority. :)

At 5'9" I worried a lot about being able to ride my crf450. I could flat foot one side fine but tiptoe the bike for 2. I was told to man up and life's been great ever since. Lol. As your skills improved it got easier especially learning how to ride and sand being the 1st terrain I was introduced to. When I got onto the tackier, less loose stuff I felt like I was in heaven. Great vid bud.

Great vid, and I completely agree with all your bullet points. As a kid, I learned balance-balance-balance is the key to motorbikes. We rode slow and turned tightly usually lock to lock for hours to master balancing. Years later when I resume motorbiking, I still have those lessons ingrained in me. Moreover, I have only a 73cm inseam and I still can handle tall bikes off road and on road very easily. Two things to add: (Gene Simmons inspiration) have your boots resoled for height or add height to the insole or both; and when purchasing tires read the tire specs for the actual OD because tire height varies by manufacturers and even within a manufacturers models...every mm helps when you have a short inseam. Thanks for posting!

If your a dirt road rider, street rider, and mild trail rider you can ride anything having to lean a bit when you stop. From 40 years of biking on cruisers, race bikes, and dual sports the seat height is very important if you off road more than just semi smooth dirt roads and fields. I have fallen many times over the years in creeks, side of hills, large ruts and climbing steep hills where i had to maneuver around trees, rocks etc where when I had to lean that direction at the time and I could not touch the ground. You either have to slide off the seat and hang on for life it seams to continue up the incline. If you think you can turn the opposite direction then you slid off the seat quickly to avoid hitting something you really do not have time to slide to the other side of the bike and place you other leg down. Slowing down to have time you lose momentum which is a real factor when off roading on steep trails. Now as a young man I had to have the biggest and the fastest dirt bike / dual sport. I have own all of them. 650 and down. My favorite take a road trip bike was the KLR650 with one tooth up front sprocket for freeway speeds. That made it suck off road having to clutch out on a hill or our of a bowl or creek bottom. I ended up carrying 2 front sprocket sizes. Worked great. 14k miles a year on that bike. I fell over allot in tight turns because I could not touch the ground. Lowered the bike 2 inches and fell half as much. Allot more confidence off road. Xrl650 Blew a new one up running 65 mph at the 500 mile mark on the trip, Used allot of oil also. Bike had 2500 miles on it when started the trip. Honda replaced the entire bike, They changed the sprockets before giving me the bike. Drove it 3000 miles on one trip after putting 1000 miles on it, Ran 70 / 75 MPH everywhere. Had to add a little oil every two gas tanks used. Much better bike then KLR off road in every condition yet sucked on highways and was wound tight even regeared. Was very tired all the time on the freeway. it was also lowered 2 inches, fell over allot until lowered then about half as much. Had a DR650 better than Honda on road. Not near a KLR on road, Better than KLR off road not near the Honda off road. At 2600 miles Suzuki had to repair the engine due to a cam bearing oiling issue. Told me I could not drive it 70 all day like that even with synthetic oil. They regeared it also killing to off roading on slow steep climbs helping on freeway. Was not lowered but lighter and a touch shorter then the other two stock bikes. fell yes but not as much. I now will go back to the KLR650 lowered and the seat cut 1 inch and carry two front sprockets it is an easy change if I get into harder off road enviroment. In out group we have never had the bigger dual sports get through the trails. To tall and to heavy to climb goat trails etc. I am 6ft tall with 32 in inseam and weigh 240. The best dual sport I have ever ridden was a xr400r with baja kit and the xr650 engine custom balanced for freeway riding. Was 3 inches lower then KLR or XRL. Never fell off road on the same trails yet had to carry two sprockets to be able to run 70 and 75 all day. Started running a touch of two cycle oil on long freeway trips and never scorched a Honda cylinder again. 100 miles at a time running 70 and 75 no issue and running a touch of quick silver in the gas stopped the honda from using oil. All bikes were jetted also for Honda's all come to lean to meet California crap. All bikes had better air filter and better exhaust which also help cool them a bit. So the moral of the story is it all depends on how you ride and what you expect the bike to do. We do not jump them just climb steep, ride hard on the roads and get stuck in the mud once in while. If they made a 600 engine on a 230 or 250 frame with 6 speeds I would buy it. Keep the wind in your face and close you mouth unless you like june bugs.

Another solution is to buy a 1976 Honda CR 125 or RM Suzuki 125. That year they had a really nice padded seat and 4 inches of extended travel on the front wheel and about 5 inches in the rear. They did not sit up about 7 feet off the ground like they do today. and they are a lot more comfortable. Even Vern Troyer likes those old bikes... ROX ON !!! RICK

ground clearance on an XT 250 is pretty generous. Lowering link and raise the forks.. You rarely hear anyone doing it because its already one of the lowest seat heights on the market. That said, if it needs to be lower, do it. A low bike is the best confidence builder hands down.

A shorter bike will handle better. Have a reputable company lower it, (PR2 racing is lowering mine, talk to Chris), and watch your cornering get much better. If it is done right, it should make the handling better and your rides more enjoyable.

Some say that that the rule of thump is to set the sag at 110 mm , which is about 4 Inches. I tried it on my CRF25OL and helped me to reach the ground better, but of course make sure you have the right spring for your weight. too soft suspension and the bike it's like on pogo sticks.

I am 5'8. More then 25 years ago. I had a 250KLR. I liked it high. Was normal to climb on while kickstand was down. So I could use the left foot peg to climb on. And stand on foot pegs when I kick started. After 25 years of not riding. I bought a pit bike to follow family through the woods. After one year of pit bike. I want something I am more comfortable standing on. Has bigger tires to handle ruts, and sand. And can do 60mph all day long. But, when I seen a full size 250 today.....Very intimidating......Lol

Been riding a long time, for more decades than I care to remember. That said, I still can't balance my bike for more than a second or two before having to let the clutch out.. And that's under optimal flat conditions. I doubt if something magical will come along and change that in the future. It's great advice but not something that I for example can master.. Standing is a great idea .. unless you have bad knees and hips which limit that to a minute or two at a time that quickly takes a toll further down the road. Taking out foam for one's derrière would be one of my last choices because of having to sit more. Adding an inch on the boots, lowering links, sliding forks up are about what I'm left with.. Expensive mods like tuned suspension and/or a new bike is something to dream about but not a reality when you're on SS.. Just being realistic for us over the hill gang.. Your suggestions are spot on for most of your subscribers. Every now and then I find something I can use as well.. As I always say " Nothing trumps touching ground when your bike stalls sideways on a steep off camber hill and you're leaning on the wrong side staring in the abyss.. "
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 2 жыл бұрын
It might be worth looking at our static balance vid. In our training we could get most guys doing it within five minutes using some supports, but then slowly take them away. Re: standing, it gets tougher with age! I'm at that point where it's the transition that hurts the knees, so I try to stay standing for quite a while, then sit for a quite a while... and try to use bumps in the trail to throw me to my feet lol.

Just a thought- for the type of 'trails' (I use the term loosely) myself and some buddies like having a lower bike can make the difference between falling over at almost a standstill or not. This is very slow, 'interesting' terrain, with lots of logs, tight-steep hills and very tight corners. My #1 rule is 'No Falling Down' so I really like a low, light bike. The OSSA Explorer is my choice, it really is the same as the trials model with addition of a quite good seat and more fuel. Mine is street legal also. Not much good for going fast, but I'm more concerned with getting Out and having fun. I'm. OT so young anymore and getting hurt takes too darn long to heal (plus explaining to the wife) OC forks are easy to lower on the ones I've tried BTW (WP and Ohlins) Great vids!

You need to re-adjust your rear shock "sag". That is the difference from the rear axle to a point vertical, (or slightly leaned forward). from the axle to a place on your rear fender. You measure that when the bike is on a stand, (rear wheel off the ground), and then you measure it when you are sitting or standing in your normal riding position. The difference of the 2 measurements is the "sag", and should be about 1/3rd of your total rear wheel suspension travel. (example: if you have 12" of travel, you will want about 4" of sag).

If the tire is too skinny, you get less traction. But if you mean the profile, yes the bike will be lower. I don't know if this means more traction though...

I didn't seem to catch the option of replacing the 18/21" rims with 17/19” rims in the video. No suspension adjustment needed, or could lessen the internal fork/shock height changes required. You're gonna lose ground clearance either way. just another option.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 7 жыл бұрын
i do know this can be an option for dual sport or adventure riding but i thought the smaller diameter would just cause to many issues in rough terrain?

CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS well when you are 5'1" like my wife.... what's worse? not being able to even get a bike off the kickstand so not able to ride a 350EXC, or slightly smaller diameter tires with lowered but better suspension and engine than something like a CRF250L? Sure I've "heard" that 21" goes better over obstacles and gaps, but I'd rather ride a 19" rim bike than not ride gnarly at all.
@crosstrainingenduro
@crosstrainingenduro 7 жыл бұрын
true. or sacrifice a few inches of suspension travel to lower the bike substantially... it all ends up being a compromise though in one way or another. :(
@falcn12

Sometimes you might have to combine the two. I'd rather compromise and ride!! :D I think hypothetically that I would rather keep the suspension stroke and make my rims smaller to avoid bottoming out as much.
