Flying from West Chester, PA (KOQN) to Marcy Field, NY (1I1) in the Adirondacks in our Bonanza V35B. A beautiful short soft field in the mountains, with direct access to some of the best hiking trails in the Northeast. Nice clear fall day with some early foliage colors.

Beautiful aircraft and very nice video. Kind of sad the child in back never once looked up from his game.

I love how confident your wife appears. Nerves of steel, absolute trust, or she is a pilot as well (not likely given your explanations). Anyhow, great to see you guys having fun. I am absolutely blessed with a wife just like this. She doesn’t particularly love the flying, but nothing can faze her and she loves going places. Nerves (and a stomach), of steel as well.

This is really cool. My dad had a Bonanza in the 60s flying out of Linden NJ and we flew all over the East coast. His plane had the single swing type steering wheel.

Good to see you all back! I really love and appreciate how you explain things to your wife. It helps me understand greatly on what pilots do (or shouldn't do). She asks some really good questions and happy to see her engaged. Really love that playback feature! That is slick as hell

Also remember that ground effect is free energy, induced drag is up to 50% lower - if there's runway available, staying in ground effect (preferably as low as comfortable) way past Vx and then executing a zoom climb should result in a better climb gradient than Vx alone.

Going into the grass field and picking up some turbulence in the hills, try holding a target exactly with rudder only. This will keep the wing level in no gust and mitigate wing wagging in gusts. Coordinated turns require us to lead rudder, rudder pulls aileron and not the other way. But we don't want to turn so just use the rudder rather than ailerons to keep the wing level. Good job on the short field takeoff. With light wind, down drainage egress is usually the more important consideration. At some mountain fields, it is the only consideration. Good job using ground effect to Vx, but neither Vx nor Vy is appropriate until near the obstruction. In low altitude orientation, where stall is fatal, airspeed and not altitude is life. Zoom reserve airspeed is airspeed that will allow climb or maneuvering with or without engine power. Vx or Vy when low is a really dangerous place to be. Near terrain with zoom reserve airspeed is safer than a couple hundred feet above terrain. And if a couple hundred feet above, allowing the nose to go down, if steep turn is needed to miss terrain, is safer than loading the wing to near stall. Good solid safe flight, just some extra energy stuff. Don't leave a lot of free ground effect acceleration energy on long runways. As long as runway is ahead, free ground effect acceleration energy is still available.

Solid insights and very valid points on airspeed at low altitude.

Nice video thanks. Would love to hear more about the hike. Did you get to it from the field, Uber, etc. why did you choose that one. Would you go back again and recommend to others? Thanks!

@kiltedpiper Yes on all the above. The trailhead is literally at the end of the runway and it is a great hike.

what did you use to mount the camera to the wing tip? I'm just starting doing some filming in my Debonair and have got the underwing view from the tie down, but not sure the best way to get the above wing view. great video. thanks!
