The cooler actually has a Peltier cell inside that only works when the phone is connected to the charger. That's the "Frosty" option. This is not mentioned anywhere in this unboxing and we don't know whether labs did the throttling benchmark while charging.

Considering there was an error message constantly when it wasn't connected to a charger, I think it is safe to assume the lab would have noticed and plugged it in for testing.

If it really use peltier cell, I feel this review doesn't do the cooler justice. While I don't have ROG phone, I use s10+. And with third-party peltier cooler it is able to maintain stable fps in genshin impact, while without it the fps drop after 10 minutes and become unplayable. There should be something to gain even for efficient sd8 gen2. Reviewing phone cooler or phone with cooler should include long (at least 30mins) fps stability test, because thats what I believe people looking for from phone cooler.

You guys kind of blew this review. A lot of either missed info or not entirely accurate info. The cooler does work per like every other channel you guys must have used it incorrectly or something. It works much more effectively when you open the “air port” thing. Also the frosty cooler feature only work when it’s plugged in I believe. These things were not mentioned in the review. Kind of seems like you didn’t really know much about the thing u were “reviewing”.

But why would you buy a PHONE that you MUST tether to the wall plug to game properly and maximize its "cooling" and "aeroactive" capabilities? Especially one that costs more than a Steam Deck or pre-owned CPU tower with a good GPU? 😦

@@odeiraoloap in SE Asia and probably other poorer countries people use phones as their main/only gaming system because they can't afford a phone + console/pc. So you often find them gaming at home plugged in for the extra performance with different extra coolers and other attachments - that's why there's such a big market for third party accessories.

@@odeiraoloapI have an rog phone 6d ultimate and I use the cooler plugged in a lot... It just makes sense to not drain the battery and plug it in if it sitting on your bed anyway. Also the cooler significantly drops the temperature whenever I'm playing codm or cpm it is a night or day difference. It takes more than a quick review to understand something

Isn't the cooler supposed to offer higher sustained performance rather than peak performance? Seems weird to not compare this metric rather than peak,.which would anyway be identical because it is the same SoC

I have rog7 and cooler, it works special when you play for long time. I usually play plugged in and i games like warzone and codm (120fps) it keeps the phone cool And you can see the benefit

@@rustler08 To be fair phones reached a point where they can do absolutely anything you actually need them to do years ago. So you shouldn't buy any of them unless you need a replacement. The battery hasn't gotten better or the screen or the 4 capacitive buttons. The game genie feature set hasn't improved and the camera has actually gotten worse since 2 ROG phone generations ago. Latency refresh is faster and so is the SOC but you can't feel a difference since 2018/2019 phones. They also have less RAM than the ROG 5s Pro, which is my phone. I don't need a faster SOC.

@@velvetine74 thats why im in no rush to replace my lgv60. 5000mw, insane dac that can power up to 800ohm.. And a great camera that can take full manual RAW pics. For gaming its only 60hz but its a top end oled it looks excellent and has very minimal latency thanks to lg oled having extremly fast pixel refresh rate.

I have a ROG phone 5 myself. I don`t mobile game at all. I love these phones because big screen, big battery, loud speakers, headphone jack, and no freaking hole punch or notch in the screen. Just a tiny bezel at the top of the phone like every other smartphone in history before a couple years ago when suddenly people decided they didn`t mind a hole in their screen. I tried a hole punch galaxy S22 for 3 months and hated the screen every time I brought it out. Whenever my ROG phone gives out, I`ll probably get whatever current ROG phone is out. Until someone else makes a great phone without holes in it. Sony makes a couple good phones too, but I think they're more expensive and harder to find.

Let me ask you this, if I offered you 2 different 4K tvs that were identical in almost every way and we're the exact same price, except one tv was 60 inches, and the other tv was 65 inches but had a 1 inch black hole in the top left corner of the screen, which tv would you want? I know which one I would choose without hesitation. The one that wasn't damaged and cut into my picture.

The purpose of the cooler is to maintain peak performance of the soc, so peple can game for longer durations, it is not to give a higher peak performance. Should have added graph of sustained performace over time with and without cooler

I'm surprised that I didn't see them talk about the subwoofer in the cooler and a bit surprised by the lab results. As a RoG 6 owner regarding the Active Cooler: it feels like I get back the performance gaming I lose over time when I'm too lazy to put the cooler on and it presumably thermal throttles. Was that after multiple test runs? Guess I'll watch again.

I'd be interested to see if the cooler makes an active difference if you were to stick this in the temperature control box or whatever its called. Really crank the heat up and then see if the cooler makes a difference because I doubt those temps you got could actually get any lower.

Thank you for this comparison! I was tied which one to choose, you answered my questions. Aerocooler is good accessory because of back buttons, and it prevents throttling. I bought the upgrade AC for my RP5 and I love it. cooler has release button on the top, it opens up.

I mean, cooling is always necessary, but there's only so much you can do when it's going through a pane of glass. If the peltier device drops the surface temperature a lot, and I do mean a lot, the temperature delta between the outside and inside should be able to make a difference if its able to maintain it.

Some endurance/thermal throttling test would be nice for products like phones and laptops. Sometimes due to overheating FPS drops and games start to lag or jitter.

They took games where the game has a hard frame rate cap of just 60fps that was mostly achievable since the ROG5 and said there's no difference in performance beyond margin of error they didn't even compare to other phones of the price range or chipsets. Where's the load time comparisons, where's the multi tasking comparison, frame rate impact when using the built in screen recording software. Where's the differences in performance based on phone modes was this video done in Ultra Durable batter mode, or Balanced where performance of the device is hard capped, or was it in X-Mode where the device is allowed to go a bit harder or X-Mode+ where the Aero Cooler is required for use, Rog Phones have 4 and 5 Modes 1 of which is locked behind the cooler being used. I get that we might get most of that from a Labs video, but the fact nothing of any importance was gone over meant this video was a whole bunch of nothing other than we got the phone and labs tested it somehow.

I have, from experience, come to find that the most times that I drop a phone by accident, it always lands on a corner, nowhere else. The phone I currently have took me a year of dropping it an untold amount of times by accident with a cover that only protects the entire back, sides, and edges sticking a couple - if even that much - mm above the screen, before my screen finally ended up getting a small scrape on it. Granted, I don't know anything about that particular case, and the one I have is - if I remember right - designed to absorb some - or a lot - of the kinetic force upon impact, so it might not be a fair comparison. But my phone still largely only ever landed on the edges or corners before it dropped onto either the back or front, and the few times that it landed on the front - and minus that one time - it also was protected enough to not damage the screen.

@@supaboi9 I actually prefer the bezels on the ROG Phone 7 because of the built-in stereo speakers and they make the phone better to hold in landscape mode. Plus the bezels aren't even that big nor distracting.

@@Joseph-zh7fm Redmagic is a brand under Nubia. Which has been in China for a long time. According to some old reviews within China. Most Chinese brands tend to support the device with at least 2 years of software and security updates. Reviews from 2022 suggests Nubia's new phones usually get 3 year support. Not really sure about Asus... I am using the ROG Phone 6 right now, guess I will find out soon.

Please more benchmarks on emulation. Dolphin, Citra, AetherSX2, Skyline. All great apps that really challenge this devices. Also clarify resolution and configs. Or specify everything on stock. Makes huge differences.

If you don't like the look of the interface, use a launcher. Have people forgotten launchers exist? Also, AMOLED screens don't inherently feature punchy, saturated colours. They can be used in sRGB if the software permits it and that should be the default or at least an option

Launchers exist but they have always not been worth it. Another point for a security leak, uses more battery power by overlaying a whole ui over the default one.

@@sategllib2191 They don't overlay over the regular UI, they replace it. It's always been this way and the launcher does not need to have any permissions that would impact security any more than any other app. You don't seem to know much about them

Yes and no. While launchers are more approachable than ever, and you and I probably love them, a lot if not most general users either can't be asked to dabble in or haven't ever thought of 3rd party launchers like Nova. Hell, one of Apple's main selling points is just how idiot-proof/smooth the experience is out of the box. Even if it's a gaming phone we generally have to assume the user is the lowest common denominator: ie someone who's ignorant of things like launchers and doesn't care to learn.

For macro cameras, I would like to see a circuit board used to take photos of components to get details unreadable by a pair of 20-20 vision eyes. I adore my OnePlus 7T Pro for the ability to read model numbers of different IC's, transistors, resistors etc.

no sd card slot makes zero sense on an android phone in 2023.. especially if it's gamer focused, as i'm sure many of the customers of this type of "gamer" focused phone load their SD cards with games, etc.

@@danavidal8774 throw in lossless music too (i.e. my current phone has ~250gb of just music files on it), a couple of 4k movies (often upwards of 50gb each) , and large games, etc, it fills up fast for those of us who use their phones for everything.. so external SD storage is a must.

I love the short circuit reviews, but I wouldn't mind them being a bit longer to be more accurate 😊. There are a few other reviewers who have much lower temperatures and more stable frame rates/frame times. Also a few of the specs are inaccurate. Very enjoyable review though keep it up

9:39 IMO, they should switch those around. 4 (preferably, at least 5) years of OS updates and (then I'd be more willing to accept) 2 years of security updates. And IMO, that should probably include some 'X' amount of those years should start ticking when the company stops selling them. Because putting a phone on the market (as in actively selling it in stores/online) and then have people who bought it new, buying what's essentially a 1-year-phone, isn't OK.

the cooler is much needed in summer. Phones can get quite hot even when they are only sitting on the desk charging. Most of the world don't turn AC as low as North Americans do.

I'm going to throw the ASUS ROG phone into my next "select a new phone to buy" round up just for the fact that they've kept the headphone jack. I sorely miss mine and have spent at least $80 on dongles and adapters to charge and use wired headphones/car stereo at the same time. None of them worked so far. I don't have a smart car stereo with Android Auto/Apple Carplay, so don't @me about that shit. I just want to use a fucking headphone jack!

Yeah thats been a sore spot with me for years when it comes to getting music in my cars. Always ended up getting an FM to bluetooth 12v plug in. But thankfully the car i bought recently comes preequipped with bluetooth audio and not JUST calls like the Audi i had

Its no surprise that the phone does lose slight on performance since the cooler does drain not little BUT actually ALLOT ! you can simply leave the cooler attached on the phone and it will drain the battery much faster than the phone would lose charge by it self being idle but its true that the fan is mainly ment to be used with the charger being plugged in and bypass charging enabled.

In canada, do look further than Newegg, please do. They've had jacked up prices since 2019 and any other store is a better buy. You may have good deals, but look elsewhere as well, just to make sure you get the best deal.

not only that, but having an SD card allows you to offload temp storage, app storage, etc so your faster internal storage stays free which over time can help reduce "age lag" that some android phones can get when their storage approaches 90% full.

I mean, MicroSD is not really usable on Android these days. Because of Google's DRM-driven measures, it can only do photos, SOME video (4K60 and 8K are made to default to the internal storage because of low sequential R/W speeds), and downloads of spicy content and torrented (pirated) media. You can't run ANY games off it unlike the Steam Deck.

Well... that's kinda what I expected. There's only so much cooling you can do to a device that is also being designed to be weather-resistant. Phones and handheld cameras are just the worst for cooling. They have to be built like a thermos just to avoid dying from a light rain or roasting the hands and leg meat of the user. Phonemakers are gonna have to really think out of the box if they want the "gaming phone" to be more than just a marketing stunt. Maybe a copper heatplate with a gasket covering it would do the trick, but I doubt it'll pass the durability test. Another idea might be to insert a "cooling unit" attached to a copper rod that you kinda... stab through a small hole in the device. Anything to actually wick the heat out of the case rather than _through_ the case material itself.

I'm on 2 years old ROG phone 5 and it's still going strong. One of the more useful features is the charging limit that can be set to 80 or 90%. But it has a potentially fatal flaw which may have been deliberately engineered into it: it can easily deform in the middle. Some people had motherboard problems, which became apparent after many months, because of this. I don't know if I'd trust ASUS not to engineer a flaw into a phone again. Also, damn, that inflation in price is wild.

Don't know the details of this phone, but usually when these kinds of devices deform it's because the high internal heat causes battery swelling

@@go-away-5555 no. This one is deformed by bending. Search youtube for the rog phone 5 bend test. It fails and cracks. Mine and the others bend at the same place. Also it's nowhere near the batteries (which are on the upper and lower sides of the phone).

yes it can be mounted too bro. GSM Arena made a review on the regular ROG 7 with the cooler attached. There was no difference in temps and performance vs the ultimate version aerocooler attached
