They are not Chinese German, they are the 800 Chinese troops holding out at Shanghai against the Japanese covering the retreat of the Nationalist forces. Is from the movie The 800 I think, they wear German gear since Germany provided them with weapons and gear before WWII broke out in Europe.

China and Germany had quite a good relationship before world war II broke out.Nationlists formed some units equipped with German equippments and also trained by German officers. But due to the fact that China was a backward agricultural country, they can only form very few of these German-like units with a low military budget. In fact,Chinese have almost none of these units left after the battle of shanghai.

Chinese (German trained unit) hold out at Shanghai would be a better title as that is what this film is based off of. They wear Stahlhelms and use German equipment such as Stielhandgranate’s and Mauser Karabiner 98K’s as Germany supplied them with that equipment prior to the invasion of Poland (September 1939.) also an extra note, the Sino-Japanese theatre of WW2 (and prior to the break out of WW2) was probably one of the bloodiest theatres you could have possibly fought in. Also, the battle of Shanghai is sometimes referred to as “the Chinese version of Stalingrad” as it parallels the Soviet battle for Stalingrad on the eastern front (during the German invasion of the USSR, советский-союз.) Just wanted to stop by and give people some information in case some people didn’t know what this was about and if anyone was confused about the title.

Later, the Japanese would hand over various captured goodies from the Chinese to Japan's auxiliary troops. My grandpa serve in Kyōdo Bōei Giyūgun (Indonesian Homeland Defender) and he was issued with stahlhelm and Gewehr88. Cannot really confirm the gewehr since he passed away decades ago and the only photo about him while still in service shows that he actually carried British Sten gun. and also a unique fact about the Indonesian defenders of the homeland (PETA): This homeland defense army was formed by the Japanese during its colonial period in Indonesia and the task of the PETA army was to fight against the allies and were also forced to be guards in forced labor camps or other commonly known as romusha. and at that time there was once a soldier from PETA who wanted to carry out a rebellion in Blitar to seize independence but the rebellion failed miserably. As a result, he disappeared from Indonesia so as not to be sought by the Japanese army until Indonesia's independence he did not show himself and the following year he was considered dead by the people and was also considered a hero of Indonesia.

Suicide attacks may seem silly in this video, but in the Sino-Japanese war of the time, suicide attacks as well as large-scale cold-weapon melee combat regularly broke out on both sides (Japanese soldiers preferred to get close to the enemy to win in close combat, while Chinese soldiers' poor supply capabilities led to perhaps one rifle for every two to three soldiers).

The Chinese 87th and 88th division did not really use German equipment. Besides the helmet and the grenades, they used mostly Chinese made or copied equipment. For example, the standard issue rifle is a copy of the Commission 1924 model, which is called the Chiang Kai-Shek Rifle or Zhong Zheng Style Rifle (7.92mm Mauser). Other divisions would still have many older Hanyang Style Rifle, a copy of the Gewehr 88. Chinese do not have MG34, but still uses Maxim gun and each squad's primary fire power is the Czech ZB 26 light machine gun (20 round) similar to the Bren gun. China also lacked artillery of all kinds. The original plan is to have 60 of these division that are fully trained and equipped, but of course war was forced upon China too early. Chiang was still preparing for war and was hoping for 2 more years to prepare, but the July 7th Marco Polo Bridge incident happened and war came early.

>>> Excellent movie, *it would be good to see it in Spanish* . On the other hand, the German helmet (which many erroneously call: *"Nazi"* ) was adopted by other nations even before 1939 because it was perhaps the one that provided the greatest protection to the troops against the fragments of fragmentary artillery shells since the Great War.
