The Karateka closest to the camera showed good technique but I have one criticism when in front stance between instruction for the next part of the test there was too much fidgeting. A minor point perhaps but easily rectified. I am 67yrs old by the way and have been training constantly since I was 17yrs old. I did Wing Chun for 15yrs, WTF TKD for 20yrs reaching 3rd dan then at 52 I fancied a change and started Shotokan training and currently hold a 2nd dan in this great art. Martial arts can truly be a lifelong endevour!

I agree, except that I was told by Okazaki Sensei (Teriuki 10th Dan) that my Shodan test (1987) was one of the best he ever saw (for a caucasion). But my speed and technique were very similar to the one closest to the camera. I imagine he passed. I would say they all probably passed.

The lady was awesome !! No movement wasted, perfect breathing, very efficient. It is only natural she finished the kata first. Good balance, speed and timing. Good hip and core engagement, hence good hikite and hikiashi. Her weight was in the stances.

If you cannot perform basics with strong techniques and good technical delivery why would you want to see advance kata or waza? Too many times people want to show their skill with higher level kata they have learned and forsake the practice of kihon kata like the Heians, Tekki, Bassai. They feel compelled to show you Kanku sho, Unsu, Sochin and other kata. When I give an exam I expect a dan grade to have excellent delivery of Kihon kata. The higher the dan grade the better the Kihon should be after years and years of training and practice they show have less mistakes and clean execution. I don't care so much about a kata one has learned 6 to 9 months ago. The kata you have been doing for 5 yrs, 10 yrs, 15 yrs should be executed at a high level. Just saying in my humble opinion.

Very good over all dear friends. One important point: the Hikate is a critically important biomechanic of your waza. We must give as much effort and concentration to the hikate as we do to the waza you are executing. Position of the hikate fist is essential so as to ensure a firm launch pad for your attack or defence. The Hikate is the wife of Uzu (the hips). A formidable coupling of critical importance. Thanks for sharing this. Oss Sensei Joe Moffitt SHOTOKAN YUDANSHA UK

A very nice way of putting it. I feel the man nearest the camera really needs to pull back stronger and keep that arm tight by his side and not have it flop around during his techniques. Bigger movements and longer stances all around would be good also to help generate power.

For my Shotokan shodan, I had to do 4 kata, two heian kata chosen at the time of the exam by the examination panel, and 2 advanced kata of my choice from bassai dai, Jion, empi, hungetsu, teki shodan and Kanku dai. But as we had bassai dai as one of the required kata performance of 3rd Kyu onwards we were discouraged from electing to do bassai dai for shodan

@@millar876 What Association was this? seems rather excessive. A high ranking tester (5th Dan and above) does not need to see that much to accurately determine your skill level. In the ISKF (this video) we were (are?) required to do Bassai Dai from 2nd kyu to Shodan. And improvement must be seen at each level.
@millar876
@millar876 Жыл бұрын
@@USGrant-rr2by we are a small association that's part of the scottish karate governing body. The 4 kata are spread throughout the exam to test you under pressure and exhaustion, more than your knowledge of technique itself. at the end i was as tired as ive ever been, my brain was barely working anymore and i actually forgot part of one of my kata right at the end, but kept going to the final kumite rounds. by that point i thought id failed because of it, but passed because the examining instructors knew i knew the kata and the spirit i showed by continuing even though i thought id failed and they could see it on my face when i fluffed the kata.

My comment is for the judges.. this club is very top-heavy, look at all the BB's judging this test. At 6:32 you see the guy with his arms crossed and the ( girl?) to HIS left... slouching. Remain as neutral as possible when judging, but give the test your full attention ( don't slouch and look board, I only get one black belt test). Do not intimidate them with your stern looks... We know you're a bad ass, but we are testing and you don't need to hold that over the students. I bet this club has been around forever. And I also bet that most the students are in high-powered positions in real life. Dr's, lawyers, and indian chiefs.

They are each assigned to watch a different testee. They give their input to Okazaki Sensei( 9th Dan, head of ISKF) and he makes the final decision. However, when I tested in 1987 there were only 2. Okazaki Sensei (Teriyuki, 10th Dan, since passed) and Greer Golden Sensei (5th Dan, one of the highest ranked caucasions at the time, he also has passed). And I agree, Some of the testers demeanors leave a lot to be desired...almost one of derision?? ISKF was founded in 1977 and has since broken away from the JKA.(2003 I think) I left it when this happened.

@@ACoustaDC No, not in an organization as big as the ISKF. More than likely their immediate sensei is not even one of the testers. However, it does not take an excessive amount of demonstrations for a high level (5th dan and above) karateka to determine the skill level of a lower level brown or black belt. In Shotokan, all a Shodan signifies is that you are master of the basics.

Great. for years I have practiced this style. Unfortunately, I find it rigidly set and if the physiology of the body is not respected, it is a method that causes joint damage. Unfortunately this way of practicing comes from the university or military schools. We need a finalized method that can be practiced for a long time. With less wear.

The following Kata: Kanku-Dai Bassai-Dai Jion Empi Hangetsu Are all considert 1. Dan Katas as there technical difficulty is about the same. So is up to the Dojo which one they want to see for 3.-1. Kyu and up to the Dan-Examinator to choose their preference. There is no specific "correct" order as these Kata are all on part in terms of technique

+Timothy Kerofsky and Family Actually, it's different in Japan than it is in Western countries. Average time in Japan takes about 2-3 years, but that's because they train much more frequently (4-6 days/week, sometimes during school for P.E.) than the average Westerner (2-4 days on average, usually afterschool or work). In the West we view the shodan rank as a certain level of mastery. The Japanese see it as just the beginning of real training. Shodan literally means, "first level," so they regard it as just having a competent grasp of the basics. So in the West, we tend to think one needs to study for 5-10 years just to receive shodan. But to the Japanese, if it takes you that long to get shodan, or if you're just getting it in your 20's, you're seen as either a late bloomer or slow learner. We Westerners tend to associate maturity to a certain age range, i.e., children are only so old, therefore they can only achieve so much. While in countries like Japan, China, Korea, they believe the earlier children start, the sooner they will grasp the basics and be ready for advanced lessons in their teens and 20's. Some in the West may see this as a McDojo mentality, but you have some children in Japan that perform kata and kihon better than teens and grown ups in the West. Not all, but some. So the perspective are very different on the matter, and IMHO, it has a lot to do with one's viewpoints on age being a mark of maturity, among other things.
