SHOTS FIRED on Opening Day | Colorado First Season Elk (EP. 2)

In episode 2 of this first elk season in Colorado, it's opening day of the season and Randy Newberg is up early well before daylight to get to his glassing knob for the morning. He located a bull yesterday while scouting, and he wants to get into position for shooting light.
He doesn't get any responses from where that bull was yesterday morning. He does locate some cows, and continues to cover country. Way off in the distance about a mile away, he glasses up a bull that he decides to go after.
The bull is bugling and Randy tries to keep downwind of him, hoping he keeps bugling. He keeps inching forward, sneaking into position. After getting set up across a meadow from where the bull is, Randy lays eyes on him. But he hangs up on the edge of the timber. Randy is set up and ready if the bull will only take one more step to get Randy a clear shot.

Looking forward to my first rifle elk hunts in Colorado and Wyoming. Was blessed to draw bull tags in both states this year. Have hunted mulies and pronghorns in Wyoming since 92, but was never successful applying for the Laramie Peak elk hunt area.

Congrats! I got a bull 1st rifle at almost the same time as you. Tagged out by 820 the first day. It was a great season. We got to hear them bugle all night and then got one right away opening day.

I was born and raised in Southern Colorado and have hunted all my life. When I first started there were few elk in my area, (85) but many mule deer. As time has gone on the elk population has increased a lot. Anywhere I hunt I can hear human activity, a highway or a railroad. I do not have to go into the deepest back country to find an elk thankfully because I am old now. The elk are not afraid of a vehicle, only if that vehicle stops. There is mostly private land in my area and one big ranch in particular has a large herd of elk, 400 plus, that I consider the seed herd. 2020 is the first year I have harvested an elk on public property and was a very satisfying hunt. I hit the jackpot with that elk because it is one of the two best tasting I have ever harvested. I have passed hunting on to my son and he is doing the same with his three sons. I hope I am there the first time those boys hear an elk bugle. The hair on the back of their necks will stand straight up. An outdoor life is as satisfying as it can get. Little more than 4 minutes in the video and noticed the Sitka colored chopper mitts! Be back after the video... Absolutely fantastic hunt! Perfect shot! I got a few points. Not next year because I have an archery drop camp trip planned with my dad during archery season, but in 2022 I plan on burning my points for a 1st season rifle tag. Who knows, hoping that my dad has such a good time, maybe he'll tag along. I remember your first trip with Beau and the Llamas and the questions you had and got answered. Look at you now! You're a true professional with them!

Another great video. Randy, I live in Australia and I tell people that I live in the greatest country BUT I was blessed to have worked in Michigan for 3.5 years when I was young. If I couldn't live in Australia, I would live in the US. I loved my time there.

So I bought that R. Newberg fancy Gerber knife hoping it would bring some luck this season. On first day archery hunting I cleaned up 8 ruffed grouse with it. Seemed appropriate.... Kept the edge ok. Second day of rifle elk I cleaned up a 5x4. A week later my 16 year old son got his first Northern Alberta whitetail buck, man, was I happy that knife kept its edge. Thanks Randy! I’ll let you know how it works on a moose hide, hopefully....

Had the same Shoot 9 years ago!! only I hit 6" farther back and 6" lower ! Yes right threw the heart at 460 yards!! My 1 and only Bull elk in 35 years !!

Man oh man did he bust that rack up...what a fighter. For sure he got his genes out in the rest of the herd. His genetics carry on. What a scrapper, a real Tough guy. Nice freezer full of the good stuff. Nice hunt. Great shot placement. Thanks for the bring along.
