You know what else is great about your channel? You actually spend time trying to respond to some of the comments. Not all KZfaqrs do that.

so glad i found this channel!! now realize i am not alone in my CD collecting and love for music. You did a lot in this video, but i would love to see a video of you guys talking about semi unknown artists you found that blew you away. i had the same exact reaction to Great White. heard that album and was blown away and a fan for life.

Also, regarding AC/DC...there was a comedian once who said you can make anything sound like AC/DC, including the Hokey Pokey. And it's true.

The AC/DC effect as some people call it, but even those guys have some variety in sound. I say no, everyone should change when they want. Some examples of drastic change would be AFI, who I didn't even believe to be the same people for a long time, and Goo Goo Dolls. Their early records were snarling Punk, sung by the bassist...and then boom, switched to the guitarist as singer and began putting out the poppiest rock the world had ever heard. 😄

All together if someone says a band had no wheelhouse they can make what they want, that’s true and what’s also true is FANS can have a wheelhouse though and those bands CAN betray it

Artist need to grow I don’t want to get bored on the other hand if you completely change your sound you may also lose people. Also some of the music I liked when I was younger I can’t stand now. It all comes down to you like what you like!

I agree with Anthony on Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift music. I am 43 years old now, and I would have never listened to that stuff in my early 20s, yet here I am in my early 40s listening to Tay Tay, Dua, Olivia, Charli XCX, Ke$ha, and stuff like that. As a Bon Jovi fan, I remember in 1992 when Keep The Faith came out. Bob Rock produced it so it had a harder rock sound, almost an attempt at what could be called "Bon Jovi light grunge" in that era. That was the one and only time they did an album like that, then we had the greatest hits with "Always" and then on every album after that, they had ballads like that. Though, the song "My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms" off the album These Days is freaking amazing!! The only really saving grace off that album is that song.

You can do both. Look at The Fall. John Peel once said ‘they are always different, they are always the same’. Mark E Smith was true to himself and simply made the records he wanted to make.

Is there a way for a mega-rich artist to avoid becoming disconnected? I recently heard an interesting quote from Billie Joe of Green Day who said "We live like we have nothing" which seems unbelievable, but if true could play a part in them consistently putting out inspired albums for 30+ years.

Great and interesting topic. 😎👍 I do wish that my favorite bands and artists would sound the same as they did with their albums that made them famous and successful. But I do understand and accept that they want to grow and evolve as they get older and want to experiment with their sound. But what I don't like it when they make music that they think an audience want to hear or what is popular at the moment or try to fit into something that the radio will play or works on Spotify and Tik Tok (aka making songs that are 2.30 - 3.00 minutes long). But as a fan I still will be buying the albums from my favorite artists and bands. 😎👍

Artists should do what they like. How listeners will receive it is always going to be subjective and open to debate. Cases in point - I'm not keen on how Metallica have evolved over the years, but I am fully on board with Opeth and how they've changed. Both are examples of bands who have made dramatic shifts, but my feelings for each of them couldn't be more different. It just depends on your taste.

Some other bands I just randomly thought of Metallica - started out thrash, went hard rock and then back to their thrash metal roots Opeth - started out as a melodic death metal band, now sound more like 70s prog In Flames - started out as a melodic death metal band, now sound more modern metal. Goo Goo Dolls - started out as a garage punk rock band, then went to a more alternative sound and then a radio soft rock sound.

Artist/musicians are free to do what ever they the heck they want... weather you like it or not. That's why it's art. The role of the artist is to follow their needs first. Listeners are free to not listen to it if they don't like it.

I know there's a lot of controversy about him right now, but Marilyn Manson is one of the best examples of an artist completely changing their sound and image for the better. Every album he's released sounds like a completely different band. After Antichrist Superstar's success, he could have easily continued what he knew made money and made Antichrist Superstar 2, but he didn't. Instead he drastically changed his image and his music and created one of the best albums ever made: Mechanical Animals. Even after his "big three" albums, he continued to experiment and create new and interesting art, each one completely different from the last. That's one of the reasons I love him. His range is absolutely insane. I respect him for that.

I think the vibe for Mick Mars’ solo record was that the sound he chose was out of anger against the guys in Crue to show a total completely different side of him.

I really like the new Black Crowes album, but it took me a while to warm up to it because it was a drastic departure from 'Before the Frost...Until It Freezes' (2009). The first half of that album I enjoy and when I heard that the 'Shake Your Money Maker' tour served as inspiration for 'Happiness Bastards,' I got worried because it was like them saying they were going back to the basics, which is fine, but The Black Crowes have grown so much since their debut that I didn't want them toss away all of their development over the years. Now, I have a new perspective for 'Happiness Bastards' and really enjoy it. I do think it's important for bands to grow and change things up from time to time, which is partially why I can't get into AC/DC's last two studio albums. I think if Brian Johnson still wrote lyrics for the band that things would've been different.

Sometimes in concert bands change the songs live to different sounds beat to add updated there songs.

Johnny Cash, once they got away from Sun, really didn't sound the same from album to album. It was always country at its core but the sound was never the same. I guess that's a bonus to putting out some 90+ albums in your lifetime, people can pick what era they like and enjoy that.

Ihsahn keeps changing his Symphonic Avant-Metal solo cds with a layout. Each cd is different built while unique to each other. If you expecting Ihsahn to return Symphonic Black Metal that he did in his days in Emperor or Peccatum.

Many bands who go out and experiment often work outside their framework... I don't want the new Judas Priest album to be a 1:1 replica of Painkiller or Turbo or Sad Wings, yet they somehow manage to stay within the metal realm and bringing in new ideas with the old power they've got back since roughly 2014. Two bands who changed their sound all the time but stayed within their frame of reference for me were Depeche Mode and Type O Negative. No one is going to mistake Sounds of the Universe for Some Great Reward, yet it's still within their sonic framework, which resulted in a trajectory that culminates in Memento Mori, which does feature 4-5 songs which could've been straight from Music for the Masses or Black Celebration and whatever. Type O Negative always changed their sound, some albums like October Rust and Life is killing me are a bit lighter whereas World Coming Down and Bloody Kisses are real heavy hitters - with their swansong they managed to capture the early magic but in a different light. Not every band strives to achieve that and that's alright too.

When bands change their sound on their own based on what's in their heart, I think it's a great thing. But what really bothers me is when a band has a sound or formula that really works and the fans love, and then the record label who produces that artist decides to influence the music and move a band in a different direction for the purpose of trying to be "commercial" or to sell the most albums. We saw this a lot in the 80's where bands basically were forced to cave into the MTV way of writing and producing music in order to stay popular. A band like Blackfoot is a perfect example of this. The first five Blackfoot albums are absolutely killer. Some of the best southern rock/hard rock albums of the era. Then the record label decided that the band needed to move in a more commercial direction, which led to the two worst albums in their discography, "Siogo" and "Vertical Smiles". This was such a bad decision for the band that it basically caused the band to break up and they never fully get back together.

Usually I don't like it when bands change their sound but it worked for Pantera.

Why should a soloalbum sound like the bands music

I'll always say that a band should do what they want. Sometimes bands change and I can't get on board with it. Sometimes they change and to my ears they get better. All depends.

Always have and will be a Bon Jovi fan but I did loose a little interest when Richie left. He and Jon were great collaboraters and I think his departure changed the dynamic.

i'm all for bands changing up their sound. it's how you get albums like the black album, youthanasia, cryptic writings, and persistence of time. if a band just makes the same album over and over it gets old fast. and trying new things is the goal of any good artist.

An artist should be able to do what they want stylistically and artistically. Consumers also have the right to vote with their pocketbooks as well. Geoff Tate and Queensryche in the late 90’s and early 2000’s is a classic example of this.

For me bands not so much have to change their sound, but they have to evolve it. The story of an artist changes all the time, because it's still being written. So changing your "sound" is as much part of being an artist as it is a part of being human. Because as a person you don't look the same way at things as you did 20 years ago. So why would you want to say things in the same way? The main problem is that some bands don't evolve their sound, they change it for the sake of commercial success. And if you are chasing success, you will always be behind the 8-ball. Because when you, as a classic rock band, decide to make a Nu-metal album. The moment it releases, Nu-metal isn't a thing anymore.

you can understand that a musician would want to expand his/her horizons musically.. but obviously fans then decide whether they want to continue following the band/musician or not. On the other hand fans tend to like a particular genre and it is debatable what is more important for the fans: the band or the genre?

Personally I enjoy when an artist expands and does something different on each album... not everyone will like it, hell I may not even like it, and it will always be a "what if" situation as to whether or not it works out and if it would've been better if they had just made more of the same. For example Metallica, I personally really love Load and ReLoad, the latter being my favorite album behind Ride The Lightning. The bluesy hard rock vibes are something I enjoy, and the stark contrast to their earlier material is something I dig a lot... however it didn't go over well with many, nor did The Black Album (probably the better example here). I, and many others, are probably very curious as to what another "Thrash" album would have been like following Justice, or hell even The Black Album, but it's just a "what if". Some examples I really like: Kiss - Hair / Glam Metal era (80's) Metallica - Black / Load / Reload (90's) Van Halen - Van Hagar era (mid-late 80's-90's) Guns 'N Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II (90's) Pantera - Groove Metal (Cowboys - Steel) Dislikes: Metallica - St. Anger Slayer - Diabolus in Musica Sepultera - Roots - Roorback (Dante XXI was a good comeback)

For me, Metallica and OG fans of Metallica are exactly what this video is for. Metallica changed their sound more than once, and OG Metallica fans hated that. I like Bon Jovi even with the change. His voice was going, and it's been gone for a while now, so going country/soft rock is where Jon can still sing but not extremely ruin his chords up. Shinedown has done this, too.

When you listen to Brian Johnson in goardie he does sound normal but his voice he uses for acca suits the music .

Yes and No...LOL...Take Prince for example. For each album, he had a different theme and style. However the voice is the same. Look how different the Purple Rain album is compared to Sign O The Times Album(the Camille Voice). However, both are masterpieces.

I actually like it when bands change up their sound. Rush always recorded what and how they wanted it. Genesis never gave in to what was “the norm”. So why do people say they don’t care for a band when they suddenly change their sound. Classic example: After Genesis released their last album, Ray Wilson’s attempt to bring something new to Genesis fell flat. Because it wasn’t “Phil Collins”. I guess they never gave that record a fair shot. Calling all stations was that album by the way. Ray went on to become a great musician in his own right.

I think it's good for a band to grow their sound, but basically keep what makes them unique. Like, you will know a certain band by their drum sound, or their guitar sound even before the vocals. (Like Van Halen/Hagar or Def Leppard) But, definitely they should be expected to change as time goes by. It's just when they come out with a completely different sound/style that is really jarring and can be a turn off. Weird example...Garth Brooks....very well known for his country music.....one year decides to release a rock album as Chris Gaines with a soul patch and emo hair. While the music wasn't bad, it was just weird.

When i go buy a Lays chips and a case of Pepsi i know what i will get as im buying it If i see an Iron Maiden album i never had i know if i buy it its what i expect. At the moment you become a product you got to stick to your product by respect for who give you a life by supporting $$ you. All these egomaniacs that weng solo at time in their career all ended out touring nigh clubs despite touring sold out arenas with their respectful original bands. That alone tells a lot about sticking to what your product was when you were homeless no food then fan$ started to feed you by buying your product, Maybe its just me,,
