Ahead of the release of Nate Parker‘s critically acclaimed biopic, The Birth of a Nation, a decades-old rape case has resurfaced, resulting in a major controversy for the filmmaker.
As a result of the allegations, many are calling for a boycott of the film, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival and was purchased by Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million.
On Thursday’s edition of NewsOne Now, Roland Martin and his panel of guests discussed the controversy surrounding Parker, the 1999 rape case, the upcoming release of this film, and if African-Americans should support it amid the scandal.

First of all... If y'all read the fucking rape report, It clearly states that she said her and Nate had "Consensual" sex... Meaning she gave her consent to have sex with Nate... She had sex with him and his friend the same night but later regretted it and tried to pin rape on his friend.... So idk why Nate is being brought into this. Either way the judge said they were both innocent.... She shouldn't have been sleeping with two dudes anyway.... Then hollering rape is so messed up when that's not even what happened... Sad ass and this was when he was 19 years old anyway why tf is this being brought up??? He didn't even do anything wrong. I also find it very odd how he has this great movie coming out then all of a sudden these reports come out smh they don't wanna see a black man win. Watch that movie DOMINATE THE BOX OFFICE... y'all can't stop what God has for Nate.

im a sexual abuse survivor and i support women rights. With that said I think this is some sort of barrier put in place to stop people from seeing this film. Especially with the social climate in black america right now.Where were these people when his last film was out? He was the lead male role in that film. He has done several films. But now we are supposed to condem him for a crime he was aquitted of 17 years ago? I will be seeing this film and I'm taking my sons.

Queen, sorry for your past sexual abuse but glad you made it through. I agree with you. He's made many movies in the past so where does this fake outrage come from all of a sudden and why? Hmmm.. Rhetorical questions of course. I'm supporting the film as well. Another thing to think about, Nate is a black man accused of raping a white woman and was acquitted. "Where they do that at?" If there was the slightest hint of him being guilty he would still be behind bars. Either he was innocent or she had some grossly incompetent lawyers.

nate was found not guilty bc they couldn't found any proof of the rape so BY DEFAULT he was found not guilty but that doesn't mean he is an innocent man! he shouldn't been running trains on drunk white girl in the first place, and inviting others into the mix so he put himself in that position so I have no sympathy for ass or his sex train buddy who cowrote the movie! I will watch the movie bc I've always been interested in the story but i won't support film at the theatre bc that would be supporting nate parker! I don't care to make him and his wife richer so I'll wait until I see one of the little Mexican guys on the street with their bootlegging dvd copies and I'll buy the $3 $4 DVD from them, this way I can watch it without contributing to nate parker's pockets!

It is insane to compare the Parker case with police shootings of black people. The circumstances of the cases are miles apart. Parkers' case is he said she said he says the sex was conseted to she said it was not. No cop or guy like Zimmerman saying a shooting did not happen they argued, the shooting was justified. Its apples to oranges. With that being said its clear that to some it is not important is guilty or not. Because he as accused people will hate him forever. Not fair at all

She sounded rather stupid doing so. A racist criminal system means that the chances of a Black man getting away with rape of a white woman is close to zero. If he was acquitted, it simply means there was no evidence to convict him. The vast majority of Blacks who have been lynched were lynched over BS allegations of raping white women. Emmet Till was murdered over whistling to a white woman. A person would have to be mentally impaired to see any sense in this argument.

The answer to that last question, I think Black America should seek the truth about Nat Turner and remember this is Hollywood and the film is backed by the White Fox. If the movie stick to the truth of Nat Turner, it well never win an academy award. But if it vilifies, demonize Black freedom fighters it might be nominated. My worry of the Hollywood version will be the gross inaccuracies of Nat and his cause, and this will be seen by many of our younger generations who rarely read a Black historical book. In the end, Nat Turner was captured, tortured and lynched, but after his death, they went and killed and raped a thousand more innocent Black men, women and children. So let's see how much of this they will depict on the big screen.

If Roland want to have a factual discussion then he should have insisted they read the court transcript before coming on the show. While I feel horrible about this young woman's death, it is not harassment for Nate to defend himself from a false allegation of rape. Especially after being found Not Quilty in a court of law. His female guest allowed their personal feeling and experiences to get in the way of making a logical argument. Moreover, her skin complexion has very little to do with this rape allegation over 100 years after the end of slavery.

First of all I was too excited when i first heard this was coming out...I think i jumped up and down.......So to me this movie means alot...Yes it's very tragic of what happened to the young lady, I was so sad to hear this....she must've had a really hard time. He denies any part of it and God knows if he really did or not and he will face him one day like us all. However he was tried in a court of law and found not guilty with a jury and everything. So for people to go back on this crime from 1999 to now reminds me of OJ simpson. When he was found not guilty. Blacks in general were happy with the decision but whites weren't although he was found not guilty. However he was pretty much punished for his old trial that he was found not guilty in, which is why he received a harsher sentence this time around. Also who are those two young ladies they seem so upset. Yes Rape is a issue that needs to be discussed. However you shouldnt try to ruin a mans career over his past that HE WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY OF.....I dont get this yes Rape is apart of the black community but how dare you call your own culture out. Rape happens all over the world in every culture. If you were tried for a crime and found not guilty then you shouldnt be punished.... although people still may have their thoughts that you were guilty, but YOU WERE FOUND NOT GUILTY PERIOD. People have accepted R. Kelly after what he was accused of and we saw the tapes....but i bet yall listen to his music. I dont even see why this is being talked about. I could see if he was found guilty but he wasnt. So what other reason would people not want this story told....The agenda is to stop the film from being seen because it depicts slaves rising up when for the most we part have only seen them laying down like in roots 1 ect. This is a powerful story to tell the black community....When I told my best friend that I couldnt wait to see this movie...she said who is Nat Turner?? How many others dont know.......So what is the agenda behind not telling this story. Are we going into every movie writers, actors, directors, camera man, or the whole film crews past and bringing out all their past crimes or mistakes. NO! this is not a good reason not to see this film. Nor to trash Nate Parker. To make him the poster boy for Rape when he was found not guilty is the wrong thing to do. If he was guilty and found not guilty then he will have a second judgement by God. Its not our place to try him again for a crime he was found not guilty of when he was young. After he has been a productive member of society hence forth.

Yes, absolutely support the film for all of the reasons cited by the panelists. And since the conversation regarding the sexual assault case will take place around the country in front of and behind closed doors anyway, I like the suggestion the sista on the far right put forth to have Nate reinvest a portion of his earnings back into the community to foster a much needed dialogue around sexual assault in our communities as a show of good faith, sincere empathy and to make his apology more complete.

Please stop this Black people! Nate Parker has been a fairly accomplished actor for some time now, but his 20 year old ACQUITTED case magically comes up when he gets major backing to release a film about Nat Turner's Revolt and he's getting Oscar buzz for this film! 20 year old acquittal!...20 year old acquittal! All there needs to be for guilt in the public's eye is for there to be an accusation! What happens in court DOESN'T...EVEN...MATTER! If you're in court for it, you're guilty!

Stop this foolishness.Talk about a false flag. This incident happened 17 years ago! Even if he was found guilty, he'd have already served his time and been done with the whole matter. This is like double jeopardy, trying a man all over again for something he was acquitted over. Stop. "Two of the most powerful scenes in the movies deal with rape." Such irony. A film with a fictionalized interracial rape (Nat Turner never had a wife who was raped) while the movie star was accused of an interracial rape and his roommate convicted before having his conviction reversed with the DA electing not retry it when necessary witnesses could not be located. Then the movie omits the fact that Nat Turner and his men murdered 35 or more defenseless children, infants, and women--more than the white men they murdered. Why were the facts of his rebellion whitewashed?

This film and the issue of "rape culture" don't have any business being discussed together. We are saying the system doesn't work at all by connecting this to this film. We were not there, and we don't know if this was just a sexual encounter or not. If declared not guilty, we should respect that. Period. The two should be separate. This film is definitely one that should create discussion.

I could have watched them talk about this for a whole hour so everyone could say what they needed to say and have a good debate. The fact of the matter with Birth of a Nation is that Nate Parker has already been paid and the only people who will hurt from lack of support is Fox Searchlight who only wanted to release a great film that would showcase a part of Black American History that isn't widely known. There are many other people that worked on this film who will be effected by a lack of support and as a result less Black films will be brought to us on a big stage like this film. There is nothing we can do to change the verdict of this case. Nate Parker can become an advocate for rape and consent if he chooses to but does not need to be required to. We can speculate and debate until the cows come home, but I don't think Nate Parker is the same man he was 17 years ago. I am going to see Birth of a Nation because I want to watch the story of Nat Turner brought to live and support a film with a large Black cast in hopes that more will continue to get made.

As someone who has been a victim of sexual assault in my youth, I am sympathetic to anyone who has actually gone through such a difficult occurrence.....BUT, with that being said this is a ploy to stop a major historic event in Black history from being told. He was proven not guilty by a jury. How often does a jury let a Black man off scott free? He must've really had nothing incriminating that could have lead to any sort of guilty conviction. To my Black female feminists--stop falling for this trick! So many white male celebs have been found guilty of the same same things as Mr. Parker has been accused of and they aren't blackballed/blacklisted or attacked like Nate has been. Think about Charlie Sheen, Roman Polanski, and others--Mr. Polanski is was accused of sexually assaulting a little girl and had a warrant out for his arrest. Upon realizing this, he fled the U.S. for France and hasn't looked back since (also b/c France won't extradite him back to the U.S.). His work is still celebrated in Hollywood to this day and that happened in 1977. So to answer the original question, yes, my family and I will be supporting his film!

The thing that bothers me is this happened almost 20 years ago. I find it ironic that this case that he was acquitted on 17 years ago has surfaced as this film could be up for several major awards including the OSCARS. I don't know why people feel like this man who has kids a wife should relive a situation that has came with a verdict. It's not about Nate Parker it's about Nat Turner. It's not a person in this world that does not have a history behind them. I would not expect Nate Parker to beat himself up over this because when you do that people then believe that you're admitting your guilty. Rape is a serious offense as I have daughters of my own BUT to say I'm not going to support Nate Parker because of a trial 17 years ago that he was acquitted on is BS. I believe we find every reason not to suooort each other in the black community and this is proving it. One thing I will say is NATE PARKER you NEVER TURN DOWN OPRAH WINFREY'S advice. Like you said on the breakfast club you're a thousandaire she's a billionaire. Learn something from someone who has been in several history black movies, someone is established in the film and TV industry. I believe once black people realize everybody is not out to get you INCLUDING your own we will ok. To those 2 black women that were on the panel it was more about something they've been through and can't get over. The whole panel was not allowing anyone to talk and it's sad because important things could have been said. I will support the film because I'm from Norfolk VA raised in Suffolk and would like to know more about my history but I will also read any book that may speak on Nat Turner because just cause it says "based on a true story" does not make it all true.

When he creates music that is wholesome and promotes the sanctity of marriage I will think about caring about his work.

This historical account has nothing to do with the accusation of rape against the director and lead actor Nate Parker. There should be no reason that this great depiction be minimized due to women feeling "revictimized" and slighted because of their own insecurities. Men get raped as well but I do not see anyone attaching that to this feminist "movement" to villainize and subsequently victimize Nate. We, as a people, need to be able to focus on and be aware of what is and is not going on and being said. This issue being a determining factor in supporting this work or not is disgusting. He was found NOT GUILTY. END OF DISCUSSION. This is about Nat Turner and understanding what HE went through, did and paved the way FOR US in. Support this work, not the ill-placed attached accusation of rape. If you want to be MAD about "rape culture" be MAD that all these slaves in HISTORY never got justice. Fight about THAT. Get MAD about THAT. Do something about THAT. Support this work. Support Nat Turner. SUPPORT TRUTH. MUAH!!!
