If you are a Etsy seller in the UK, EU, Canada or anywhere internationally should you consider selling to the US?
What are the concerns you international sellers have and how about your US based customers?
Is it hard or expensive to ship to the US, what about customs and taxes? Is there lots of paperwork?
In this video I use REAL customer data from the eRank survey and my experience as a seller for 15 years to show you all the pitfalls to see if you should really consider shipping internationally as an Etsy Seller

I’m in the USA. I sometimes sell internationally and occasionally buy internationally. I just bought something from the UK on EBay. The seller and EBay made it very easy for me and gave me an idea of when it would arrive. That’s the main thing for me; just let me know!

Thank you very much for the video Pam. I have always paid for both tracking and insurance to ship. Now with the Buyers Protection Program, I no longer pay for insurance. My items are all currently under 250 but if I made more expensive items, I would send them via a courier company and insure them.

I stopped selling to the US a couple of years ago Pam. I only got a very few orders anyway and I was fed up of messages asking where their order was or complaining it hadn’t been delivered. Plus the customs paperwork took up valuable time. My items are fairly low value and international tracking was way too expensive. Luckily I have a very busy shop and selling just to the UK keeps me employed full time.

Great news the UK is doing so well for you Different items will do differently in different markets. The US is about 1/2 my sales just now

I sell internationally but I'd say no. U.S. buyers always expect tracking & Etsy always tells buyers it will arrive in like 10 days or so & on average I find everything takes about a month to reach the U.S. Just my 2 cents.

@@PamDuthie If you are shipping from, say, the west coast, it can take nearly a week to get to the east coast to then ship to Europe (& vice versa). It's three days to get from me in northern MN to either coast, and I ship priority mail, which is supposed to be faster than first class. The postal services, nearly everywhere, need to be updated, a LOT!

@@ecouturehandmades5166 Oh yes that is crazy. We forget what a little country we are here in the UK, most things (when the post office is working) get just about anywhere here in 1 day

@@PamDuthie totally envious, really! If I send a postcard to a neighbor across the street, I have to send it five days beforehand, because it gets sent to the state capital 350miles away to be re-sorted back to my town, where it sits overnight before sorted to the right carrier. If I remember to stand in line and hand it to the clerk to be hand stamped, it might get delivered the next day. Our system is badly broken.

I suspect this is because in the US you can't really ship packages to international customers without a tracking number... even though the tracking a lot of times isn't end-to-end, and you often won't see any information beyond it having left the USA and arrived in the country of origin. A fact which I've often had to explain to international customers because many expect it will be tracked end to end. Sometimes it can be... but usually it isn't, and every country is different. Estimating shipping time really is the hardest part IMO. It's hard to know how long things will take to get to every single country you could ship to, and there's a host of things that can cause delays. As someone else also mentioned, from the US it could take 3-4 days to even leave the US depending on where you're shipping from.

Hi Pam, thanks for your valuable information. As a graphic designer based in canada, I would be very interested in selling posters to the USA. Is it possible to locate my store in the USA and then use a Printify poster supplier based in the USA to fullfil my orders? Or will that get me banned? And if I go the alternative way and locate my store in Canada, more precisely in Montreal city, will I attract mainly locals? The montreal market is not interesting to me. Maybe I'm confused with the way printify works? Maybe my USA orders can be automatically arranged with a USA Printify supplier and local orders arranged with a CAD printify supplier...

Yes, Etsy collects taxes on your behalf - because they're legally obligated to. They did try to get away with saying it was up to each seller here in the UK, but once HMRC intervened they changed their tone 😆

Thanks for the great video, I’m a UK seller considering to start selling to the US, I do POD T-shirts and baby clothing , couple of questions if you could help me please. 1- if I use one of US print providers throughout printify, then I won’t be exporting goods from UK to US, so do I still need to deal with tax & duty? 2- since I’ll be selling to customers outside UK, do I need to charge them for VAT (let’s say if I’m VAT registered in the UK)? Many thanks in advance
@PamDuthie
@PamDuthie 4 ай бұрын
I cannot say really but as far as I know you have to be honest about your location to Etsy, and then Etsy should figure out the VAT etc. I am not sure but I bet our government would want their cut

Hi, I am from EU and I target UE market, not the domestic one. From what I gathered - I have only 2 options, which are domestic and international shipping options. I cannot exclude Australian or American markets in order to keep my international shipping rates low for European customers. So I have to drastically increase the prices either of an item or international shipping to include clients from locations that don't make sense to me? That's upsetting, especially that I have just started and I offer hand-printed textiles at lower prices than I should. :( I thought that Etsy calculate shipping prices based on location so the amount I wrote there was my packing fee, which was 1.5 euro. It's good that no one bought from me so far because the lost would be higher than the gain as I run sales and pricing products very low as a new seller. :( Is there any other way around?

Thanks for the advise, I tried selling overseas once and was hit with a refund after sending a package from the UK to Capetown, the customer even contacted Etsy stating that I hadn't been in touch or communicated with the customer at all. although Etsy could see my replies via their mailing system. This did cause me to stop selling overseas however I have considered it again after watching your video and @StarlaMoore, as you are also in the UK do you have a process you used to determine the correct amount of pastage when shipping overseas, would love to hear your process

Aww yes the odd horrible customer does make it a total pain Sort of good news is the Etsy Purchase Protection Program can have your back now - so long as you use Etsy labels to ship with (they are easy, you buy them on Etsy and take your parcel to the post office to be scanned) For the prices its fairly easy for me as my items are a similar size so I know what I ship in what size of box and I am used to the cost of that. The post office website can help you calculate, round it up a little bit and you should be OK. At the moment I think shipping to the US is the most expensive so just calculate for that
