How to bring back refueling but have it be safe: When the fuel rig connects the the car, it also has an electronic connection it makes with the car. As soon as that connection is made, it overrides the driver's controls and locks the car in neutral for the entirety of the time the rig is connected. Once the connection is broken as the rig is released, there's a three quarter second time delay before control is given back to the driver and they're able to release.This would give time for the mechanic to safely get himself and the rig away from the vehicle before it releases.
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 6 жыл бұрын
Why would you want refueling back? it won't make the racing any more exciting. Sadly people advocating it's return forget how processional racing was back then.
@wittwer427
@wittwer427 6 жыл бұрын
It would absolutely make the racing more exciting. It would add a lot more strategy when it comes to fuel loads throughout the race, as well as putting a end to having to back off to conserve fuel. Too much of the race is spent on fuel management.
@Bahamuttiamat
@Bahamuttiamat 6 жыл бұрын
You're right it would add strategy at the cost of on track overtaking. Engineers will always look at the most efficient way to win. The idea of flat out driving is a fallacy that has never existed on formula one -outside of qualifying. Even in the days of refueling, teams still lift and coast. Teams have always saved fuel, tires, engines, gearboxes etc. Why? because flat out driving is almost always slower than management. Refueling will see current lap records fall and not much else.
@Heksu99
@Heksu99 6 жыл бұрын
There was much more flat out racing in times of refueling. At the time they didn't need to save engines and gearboxes or tires. Four engines per weekend? No problem! New gearbox for every session? No problem! Fuel as much as you want? No problem! But nowadays they do it. And it's dull. But that's what the car companies want. Kimi Räikkönen did run flat out in Japan 2005. Because he had to. And it was possible. Nowadays they don't even have fuel to do it. And the engines should take 7 races per unit.

If hamilton had driven through the pitlane without making a pitstop, effectively a a drive through penalty, would he have gone faster than staying out on track? he would have been able to go full speed to the pitlane line and roughly the same speed down the pitlane! It is an interesting point!

In the big picture of the facility as a whole, Yas should be the new Monico. Monico was the height of glamour and prestige in its day and that matched the cars that raced there. Now we have new cars in a new world where everything is so tech driven and modern, that matches Yas as a track that represents what F1 is.

I think every racing fan just wants to watch good racing. The fact that it’s so hard to overtake to the point that the drivers can’t even attempt to do it makes for a boring race. We want to see on track battles, wheel to wheel racing. That’s what makes racing so exciting.

Going for older races look at Damon on Michael tucking his front wing under Michael's rear so the timing couldn't tell the two car's apart, or passing while interlocking wheels then you have Nigel side by side passes. Michael with Ross did most of his passes in the pits.

Safety car mix ups have caused some great races like Hungary 2014, but I can't say the same for the VSC and it mostly results in annoyance, like for Vettel in Spain last year and Hamilton this year and Ricciardo was fuming when Rosberg jumped him in USA 2016 in the VSC.

I don't think overtaking should be easier, but following another car should be. Cars can attack for 2 laps, and then have to back off 2 seconds for 5 laps to cool down engines and brakes. They should be able to run 0,5 seconds behind other cars, to give them the opportunity to fight wheel to wheel. Post 2017 wheels, but pre 2017 aero springs to mind for 2021, but let's see. Nice podcast, interesting topics.

The point made at 20 mins is so true... Perez in Malaysia 2012 Hulkenberg in Brazil 2012 Williams in Austria 2014 Williams in Britain 2015 Ferrari (not a small team i know) in Australia 2016 Ferrari in Canada 2016 Ocon and Perez in Baku 2017 Hulkenberg (Renault actually) in Singapore 2017 They always cock up when they seem to get an unlikely result (and even wins).

On the topic of pitstops, could F1 benefit from having fewer people work on the car at a time (similar to Indycar, DTM, NASCAR, etc)? This would do a lot in preventing unsafe releases like what happened to Haas, as well as make pitstops even more crucial to strategy.

To answer Jess’ question, the teams are absolutely too reliant on tech, but that has been the way of F1 for years. The battle for aero supremacy is what has killed the overtaking, which is why I’ve been a proponent of simpler aero packages since Ferrari put those god awful aero covers on the wheels lol

I'm not a Bottas lover or hater, but since this chick's example for why she has "never rated Bottas" isn't how the race factually happened, I automatically tune her out everytime she speaks. Learn what actually took place before you make these statements and maybe you would know that Bottas was the quicker one and was being held up by Felipe, not the other way around. How can it be blamed on the driver when the team had the authority to tell Felipe to move?

Thanks for the podcast - I didn't have any problems with the engine sounds btw. With the reliability penalties, if you are going to have them I've never understood why they don't just have constructors points penalties for reliability - grids stay the same, drivers aren't punished in place of manufacturers and there is loads of incentives for the teams. having said that the idea has clearly failed, and they should ease up on the penalties.

That's why F1 is not growing. Whenever some team does very well, every other affected team starts moaning specially if it was a new team. McLaren and Force india should suck it up and try to improve their cars.

Well they have a right to complain especially when Haas was the third worst team last year and suddenly they are competing for third best. Don't you see something fishy going on? It is possible that they developed their car really well but an investigation shouldn't hurt. If they have nothing to hide, it shouldn't be a problem.
@amranalsiyabi2224

BillionDollarFilms 2017: Haas > McLaren Why do we expect mclaren to develop more than haas? I think. Mclaren's accusations are to cover their own failures in the development of their chassis. So yes, it is possible that they've developed a car, within the fia regulations, really well. Charlie Whitining already said that haas-Ferrari partnership is not violating any rule. Maybe teams should try to step their game up instead of influencing the rules when it doesn't suit them.

Emran Alsiyabi well McLaren has a competitive engine and a lot more funding and I mean logically their car should be better. It's just weird for Haas to just come outta nowhere and be the 4th best
@billiondollarfilms4253
@billiondollarfilms4253 6 жыл бұрын
Emran Alsiyabi well, most of us knew that the lack of pace Mclaren had in 2017 was because of Honda and we knew they would show great pace because their chassis was good with Renault. But, they still haven’t improved much because their pace in qualifying was nothing to be proud of. I do see that they should take their tinfoil hats off but I would also like an investigation solely because you don’t start beating Red Bulls over a winter period. Sure, they should start getting better parts for their car but like I said, an investigation shouldn’t hurt.
@amranalsiyabi2224
@amranalsiyabi2224 6 жыл бұрын
BillionDollarFilms Did they really have good chassis? I think we leaned from pre season that McLaren's issues were not solely because of the Honda engine, but also the packaging of their engine created a lot of issues. With McLaren's abundant resources, I don't think being 1 s adrift from RBR reflects good chassis. Regarding the investigations, Guenther Steiner has already said that any investigation is welcome and they're 100% sure they didn't infringe any rule.

Opinion on Bottas: Mercedes are on to a winner with Hamilton, but know that Ferrari will be a threat to their constructors championships unless both of their cars can beat them. I don't think they want their second driver to jeopardise Hamilton, but there's bit pressure on to beat the Ferraris. I don't think he'd cause too much of a problem for Hamilton either, but I think Ricciardo 2019 makes a lot of sense for Mercedes, as he has shown that he can put in solid performances and let off the fireworks when he needs to, without sending moves into Hamiltons diffuser every second race, like Verstappen 2020 potentially would. (I don't really have an opinion on Ocon but for sure he is in the mix). Basically I think the pressure on Bottas is not from having to compete with Hamilton, but having to balance being faster than the Ferraris while outshining Ricciardo as a reliable option for next year.

The girl is sensible, but hopelessly incorrect at the same time. Daniel speed. Therefore he was punished. There can be no arguments.
