Should Houston Rockets Offer Jalen Green 5-Year $160 Million Extension? + Key Offseason Dates & More
Host Jackson Gatlin (@JTGatlin) discusses whether or not the Houston Rockets should offer Jalen Green a 5-year $160 million extension as suggested by ESPN's cap guru Bobby Marks, the reasoning behind wanting to get it done this offseason vs waiting until next offseason, and what makes the most sense for Houston. Then, Jackson tackles important Rockets offseason dates including the Draft Lottery, NBA Draft, and certain contractual deadline dates, as well as sharing thoughts on the newly resurfaced Fred VanVleet vs James Harden debate after Harden's fantastic Game 4 for the LA Clippers against the Dallas Mavericks.

He is clearly nowhere near D Fox and I think it is a major gamble to bet on him rising to that level. With that said Fox would also make a lot more if he signed today. I would be more comfortable giving Jalen something like 28 mil / year which is in line with what Dejounte Murray is making for example. I can see the argument for 32 though since he is so hard to predict based on his last year.

I'm a fan from Indonesia, I really hope and analyze that if Houston wants to compete for the NBA championship, it's better to improve the team's weaknesses, namely defense and 3-point shooting. take pg13 or free agent klay thomson, while there is a chance, they will provide a better attack, and don't miss out on taking first round rookie reed sherppard he plays like stephen curry or john stochkon, don't let houston regret that if there is a chance take him because he is freed vanvleet can't be at the top of the game forever, the most he can last is 2/3 years, sherppard is suitable as his bride, he can be a reliable playmaker or top 3 point shooter,, also another one is dalton knecth who is a rookie with good talent, i call him white lebron James but his 3 point shot is also better, Houston needs one or both because they have the NBA superstar gene, so pay close attention, also keep Jalen Green, sell or move Jeff Green, JS Tate, Tari Eason, R Bullock, Boban, J Landalle, also take a chance on free agents like good players Malik Beasley, Nic Batum, PG 13, Klay Thompson, Buddy Hield, and a veteran center who can fill in for Adams. Keep that in mind for Houston if you want to win...

For current market value I think it’s worth it to give him that deal and decide to trade him next year. Any team (in this case the Rockets) with restricted free agents have the right to match ANY contract offer another team may give to said free agent. It's basically a trump card to guarantee you can keep a player, but the risk is "paying more" if someone else comes along and offers him a big deal.

@@LockedOnRockets Teams with cap space might be willing to overpay RFAs as they are not giving anything in return except the contract. Rockets probably needs to match in any case in order not to loose the players for free. Like i said before, Udoka needs to develop young core (green, sengun, thompson, whitmore, eason, smith jr) and do it fast! Because if Rockets wanna keep them all (or most) long term, they should make cap room by cutting FVV and even Brooks in summer 2026 at latest. In other words, Rockets have at most 2 seasons before they need to start winning big without the veterans.

What confuses me is Ime and Bobby Marks seems to believe in Jalen Green. Rocket players seem to believe in him so he must be doing something in practice that we don't know about. Jalen's 3 years in the league are pretty much identical. Just last season he didn't get as many shots up. Stone is going to earn his money with this contract. It will need to be loaded with incentives to make sure Jalen earns the money he is being paid. A contract like that will also make him more tradable because it protects the team trading for him. Thus giving Stone more flexibility. I suppose a contract like this is going to create a big cap hit no matter what Jalen's numbers turn out to be. Wouldn't it be funny if Donovan Mitchell left the Cavs and we traded Jalen for Evan Mobley? The signed Harden.

With the debate on whether we should have picked up Harden over Van Fleet debate, and if it would have made us a better team, sure, I will respond. I think if we had picked up Harden, it would have led to more wins, perhaps a playoff spot. Who knows? Personally, I’m old. The Morey/Harden ball was a religion I wasn’t fully sold on. I want midrange jump shots and defense. Harden transformed the game, I will give him that. Made national media look this way, but I think at crucial times he would have lapses in judgment….that I just didnt trust. So when coach Ime Udoka went, “Naw, that’s alright.” Imma trust that.

Jalen is a player who has lots of red flags on and off the court. His personal life alone should tell you enough but I’m afraid houston will have to find out the hard way. The best thing the rockets FO can do is to trade him this offseason when they can find another team to be convinced he has “potential” and “upside” and all that BS because of his Mickey Mouse march madness. Although in reality there’s no way he can perform like that consistently this is probably your last chance to be able to find another FO that believes he can. From what i saw last three years i can confidently say that he’s gonna have another season next year almost like this one. Maybe you’ll see some minor improvements as you’ve seen this season but it’s not gonna cut it after 4 years in a row of inconsistency (of course his stans will try to convince you otherwise again by making irrational excuses for him). Best case scenario he may have some good stretches for his stans to take victory laps on social media but this time it won’t be enough to convince other FOs to trade for him enthusiastically. He has trade value now that he didn’t have at the trade deadline this season and tbh we were at that point just wishing he could get some decent stretch just to be able to be traded to another team for an above average player. You don’t wanna miss the window here.

i'd really liked to see how james harden + alpi + thompson would work. i mean i'm pretty sure harden and alpi would be way more compatible than alpi + green.

They should extend Green. Why? He has a chance to become a superstar. And we drafted him, which means his loyalty to the rockets is always there.

You know Stone says he wants to run it back with the same players. Look at the Boston Celtics, they went to the Eastern Conference Finals last year. Did they run it back? Hell no. They went out and got Porzingis and Jrue Holiday. Most of Stone activity as a GM has been drafting and trading away players to tank. He needs to put the same effort into the rebuild. I think Stone thinks his work is done and is going to sit back and point the finger at the young guys and say they need to get better. We need a backup point guard/shooting guard in case Fred goes down again or Jalen starts off the season with another 2 month slump. Whether it is Harden, Malcolm Brogdan, Tyus Jones or Malik Monk, do something to make us better. We have gaping holes in our roster even if Stone says we don't.

Should the Rockets give Jalen a 5 Year 160 Million extension? Lol no, next question. Zero benefit to doing that. Hasnt proven anything at all outside of showing he's consistently inconsistent.

I would say yes. He’s shown major potential in the whole month of march averaging 30 something points with improved defense. Keep in mind this is his first year with a real coach and team. He was utilized wrong prior to Alp’s injury then ignited into a superstar for 11 games straight.

I don't think Jalen Green is ever going to be the player ppl want. Harden would have made Sengun so much better and the team. I think your wrong, the Rockets should have gotten Harden.

I would do that deal ONLY if we dont give Sengun a similar deal or more. Because it would make no sense to tied up nearly half our cap in two guys when one play better w/out the other. So, Sengun have to be traded out and bring in a cheaper replacement that fit better with Green. And that guy would be Nic Claxton. He is a free agent this Summer. We have a golden opportunity to nab Nic Claxton or trade Sengun for Nic Claxton.

I do not believe JG is worth anything close to that figure or year extension. But I wouldn't pay any one player that. The team suffers. How did Brady get to so many SBs? By deferring salary to get badass players to play with him. These past few decades have been living off Magic Bird Jorden et al. Not one of these guys is worth what theyre getting. And they get their paper and most quit tring.
