This is just a quick video answering the question "Should I add red herrings into my treasure/scavenger hunt?" (spoiler alert: no)
For reference, red herrings are decoys that only serve to distract and have no other purpose.

The Chekov's Gun rule of literature is a great way to think about this. "Chekhov's gun is a dramatic principle that suggests that details within a story or play will contribute to the overall narrative. This encourages writers to not make false promises in their narrative by including extemporaneous details that will not ultimately pay off by the last act, chapter, or conclusion." We want the story of our adventures to be satisfying and to have a well-rounded end. This is a thoughtful experience that should be tidy and not have loose ends. Red Herrings are not even loose ends, they're strings that shouldn't be there in the first place.

I use Red Herrings, but in a different way. I run very small murder mystery puzzle hunts for friends. The first two rounds are just people talking to each other and learning objectives and clues. The third round then had them splitting up into groups of 2-4 people, each in a different room or area where they do a puzzle hunt and try to find special information or items I know the skill level of the players quite well. I might toss in a couple red herring puzzles into the adept puzzlers rooms, so that all teams are finishing around the same time. I include a small plastic fish inside the puzzle as a reward for solving it. This year, I'm debating about having a fish include information refuting a red herring from the first two rounds of the game (from when the players were talking to each other and trading information)

People will more often than not come up with their own red herrings. It would be redundant and poor design to intentionally design red herrings.

PREACH! But it's honestly one of the biggest hurdles for people when they're building their first hunt. So many people equate challenge to fun and it's just not the case. Now you combine someone that want's to make the hunt hard but don't know about good design and then they just stuff it full of red herrings and it slogs. I always tell people to make their first hunt clear and easy and then future hunts can ratchet up the difficulty
