Alto is the fire, Tenor is the smoke

I would recommend ultimately, going with the sound you like best. I have played alto for years, and Bari for a few years. I've played Tenor and Sop as well. While I like the sportscar like action (fast and nimble) of the Soprano, I still prefer the tone of the Alto, and for the low end, the Baritone is so much more satisfying than the Tenor to me. It's fun to play around though.

When one purchases sheet music that comes for both alto and tenor with the same backing track, very often one (the tenor or the alto) feels better for that backing track...the sound of the alto or tenor just seem to be better for that backing track, and sometimes the range ...enjoying lowest notes on the instrument and hight notes on the instrument seems like a better fit with one (tenor or alto) than another and sometimes the key signature is just easier on one horn versus the other for the same backing track. Sometimes two backing tracks are available...if one wants to play Europa in the same key as Carlos Santana, the alto is great with the available backing track, but if one wants to play the same song in the key that Gato Barbieri uses, the tenor is the way to go. The Yamaha YDS allows one to just press a button to switch between the two, and soprano and bari as well.

I started on the alto and switched to the tenor because I wanted the deeper sound. I just feel like the tenor is more me. In the end it’s all about that and the rest are just technicalities.

ok my friends i played alto for over 25 years and a month ago got myself a tenor yanagisawa and wow don't even wanna play alto anymore! its great to have 2 saxes. but i feel like the tenor is closer to what i hear in my head!

If you want to work as a gigging musician, DEFINITELY get a tenor and work on your tone. Having two (or more) horns on a gig provides a lot of sonic variety and can help keep the audience from getting bored.

thanks for sharing this! after experiencing how great it feels to play a bass ocarina coming from alto and soprano ocarina, i’m really curious how tenor sax would feel coming from alto sax. thinking about saving up for one :)

I went from clarinet to alto to tenor. I really love playing Tenor and i can do pretty much everything on tsax,like High notes and false fingerings' i played Clarinet a few months ago and really enjoyed it.Alto for me feels funny after playing tenor for a long time i cant hold my breathing since going back down to alto.

Nothing about, concerning the tuning? E flat / B flat. As compared to concert pitch????

I did my grades on tenor sax all the way up to 8, but had to switch back to alto for grade 8, the performance pieces were too intricate and fast (Bach) just couldn’t do these on tenor

Is that why the octave G is harder to get a decent tone on the tenor..I'm fine w/the alto, but the octave G honks every now and then . I brought my tenor in to get looked at and get tuned..but I realized its me not the horn.

baritone sax is 5kg I just read. Thats a big difference in weight too.
