Hi Lynden! Thank you for that marvellous device! You used the Lick over a C-Maj-7-Chord. If I only want to use the C-Maj Tones on my sax, are there any Chords other than C-Maj-7 where I could use these tones? Thank you for an answer and have a good time! Friedemann

Hello Lynden, Thank you for your very practical, easy to follow approach to playing the saxophone. I first bought a new Selmar tenor in....1984! I, like you was largely self taught. The scales scared me! So I only played where I could go, very limiting! I sold this sax about 8, 9 years ago. On the day before the first big Lockdown, 2020, in New Zealand, I shot down to the city and bought a soprano. Now, with the technology of KZfaq, I bought a cheap tutorial and an App for tuning and metro, TE Tuner. I practiced for at least one hour per day for 40 days. Then we went back to work. Though I liked the soprano, I missed, the tenor. I started to think about what I really wanted, and decided on a used top end Yanagisawa. I rang my shop, really a bunch of skilled instrument technicians, and not a music shop at all. I asked if they ever would get an instrument like this. No, never. But one just came in this week, a deceased estate! I listen to Jamie Anderson, Get Your Sax Together, and he is good. But you have a way of taking down the barriers and making it so anyone who wants can become proficient at playing the sax. I'm 63, and want to be at professional level within two years. I've had my tenor for less that two weeks and can play in all scales, but no that fast. I am for accuracy, knowing that speed will come by itself. So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Keep up the good work! All our best wishes from Down Under, In New Zealand, the Land of New Zeal!

E face ge cafe seems simple to remember. At age 66 I am a complete noob at this: A "face" and a "cafe" beginning with E and a ge in between, my mind is preoccupied with crap when i am trying to teach myself to play, and i am not retaining too much. I know how to play C and B and G with the side key, but other than that i am lost in the ozone. What do you players think about when you are playing?

Hey, thanks for this. Listening to Pandora's "Dinner Jazz" channel, at age 66, never having seriously played any instrument, i got an urge to make sounds like the jazz greats, some of whom you mentioned, so I bought an inexpensive Tenor sax to start at least making those sounds. I am too mechanical-sounding right now, and these licks sound like something I can practice. Lemme check out your channel🤔

Excellent video, Lynden. Thank you. I noticed that for m7 chords, you use a dorian, harmonic minor and aeolian scales. How do you decide which scale to use?
@lyndenblades3 күн бұрын
Hiya and thank you 🤩 It just depends on the situation. So if you’re in a 251 situation then the Dorian fits nicely rather than the Aeolian. Generally speaking the Harmonic minor is a nice option over any minor key situation, it all depends on the context. Does that make sense? 🤝🤝🎷🎷😎😎

The reason ii-V-I works and is so common is it is actually a substitute for IV-V-I which is THE most common/classic cadence (for centuries). The Two chord is treated as a substitute for the Four chord because they share common tones. You will find that ii (minor) often is a substitute for IV(major). In fact Mozart favorite sequence of chords was (vi) to ii to I…. It goes way back.

Glad you're featuring your own saxes in the lessons - seems an obvious way to sell them! You have a very distinctive style. Most online sax trainers are expert players (e.g. Scott Paddock, funk; Jay Metcalf, jazz) but only you seem to make the horn talk. The 'sax whisperer' I deem thee. If I could get the same out of your horn as you're getting here I'd buy one in an instant.

@@newscrews11 That is so kind of you to say, I am a humble function gig player with many thousands of gigs experience playing at weddings and corporate functions over the last 25 years or so. I’m not a hard jazzer, and at a wedding or corporate function the brief is to sound as lovely as you can and so that’s what I’ve spent my playing career focusing on. I’m self taught too as you probably know and I try to constantly better my skills, knowledge and understanding of my craft and these complex musical skills that make up improvisation can be broken down into bite-sized chunks and that’s how I learn and it’s also how I share my knowledge. I wouldn’t describe myself as an expert in anything really. I have no qualifications in music or teaching music, yet I’m a veteran of 1000’s gigs and even more 1000’s in teaching hours and the people who’ve hired me for gigs have always been delighted with my sound, and the feedback I get from these tutorials and my lessons is also extremely encouraging. You can get a sound like mine. In all honesty the MP and reed set up is arguably more important than the saxophone, as long as the sax is functioning properly and is good quality. It’s your embouchure, reed choice and to me, the intention that goes behind every note. It’s what’s in your mind when you play. I aim to move between each note like a dancer would move between each step they take, with mindfulness and as much grace as possible. Try it. Take C major and play each note as mindfully, slowly, exquisitely as you can, don’t rush, and make the transition between each step as smooth and beautiful as you can 🤝🤝😎😎🎷🎷 As always, thank you for your feedback and your support 🎷❤️🎷❤️
