It's better than reading a TM through a cell phone because there are not enough copies to go around, while senior leadership breathes down your neck telling you this needs to be done yesterday and when specialists take over and perform the task completely ignoring TM's then senior leadership yells at you for not performing to standard while giving no specific advice whatsoever.

@@hugejackedman7423 yes for 2 reason, one you may not like military service, I think 2 years is shortest enlistment active duty, with 6 years in reserves both active and inactive reserves, depends on your MOS Military Occupation Skills, as stated in video. Military will help many to mature, accountable, which transfers well into college and civilian job. Also pay is depended on years of service and pay grade, so coming as enlisted with transfer.

I can only go my personal experience, I came into military service at 17, did basic training in my junior year of High school, as a US Army Reserves, went back to High School, and local Tech College, got my 2 year degree and went Active duty changing my MOS, as he mentioned, I was not the office type, was encouraged to go OCS, Officer Candidate School, politely refused, my plan was do go Warrant Officer, but my injuries caused my career to end early. Post service, I had many offers from well known companies. MOS, security clearance was in demand. I strongly suggest if you go into Military Service, do something that will transfer over into civilian job market, check job market and forecast of jobs, I ended up in medical technical field, always in demand. The Military paid for my education, books , tutional expenses and monthy pay for cost of living. My Aussie buddy is a pilot for commercial airline, got this through his military service.

I went the enlisted into officer route. I have to say, if you want job security and you can keep good grades in college and maintain your PT standards, I feel its the way to go if you want job security. On average, an enlisted person can do 8-10 years before they have to worry about what is called higher tenure (basically if you don't promote you get kicked out. Usually happens when you are in a job that doesn't promote well. I made e6 in 5 years but I had friends that joined the same time as I did but were still e3/e4 by their 8 year mark because their job was over manned). If you transition from enlisted to officer around your 10 year mark, you are basically guaranteed a 20 year retirement because you higher tenure time restarts when you become an officer. The ranks of 01-03 are basically time based and as long as you don't mess up majorly, you will promote and be at around the 18 year mark. Your first "earned" rank of O4 lets you have a couple tries before they force you out if you don't make it. That puts you at right around 20-22 years service with a much better retirement than enlisted only. Another benefit of starting enlisted is you usually get more respect from your troops because "you been there, done that". You can also develop more feasible plans because you already understand limitations and expectations. While I was a PL, my Platoon regularly got best Platoon in the Company or Battalion because I had a strong go-getter senior NCO and I was ahead of my fellow PLs because of my prior service. Regardless of your choice to go enlisted or officer, I highly recommend latching yourself on to one or more strong NCO mentor/s. It doesn't have to be in your chain of command. Find one and try to be the best whatever you are. NCOs are the back bone of the military

I did two years in college, was burned out, and enlisted in the USN. I was a Corpsman and had rewarding work in a Naval hospital and then two years at sea. In my world I rarely saw an officer during my work day while at sea. I had the run of the ship and was welcomed everywhere; everybody likes "Doc". I sometimes wondered where the officers went and I considered that I had a wider range of contacts then they did. Socially, I was better off and kind of felt sorry for them because they only had other officers to hang with. It looked like a lonely life to me.

"Officers and some senior NCOs spend a ridiculous amount of time these days on the computer" Man, that kinda hit home. After getting promoted to first my daily routine changed from hands on work and being on the field constantly to reports, reports, some more reports, paperwork, and a whole lot of computer work. I regularly had to break out of the office to get a little fresh air and meet my subordinate NCOs and my friends. The amount of time you spend on a computer really is ridiculous...

I would only advice going enlisted over officer if you wanted to go do the down and dirty out in the field activities if you hate the idea of desk/computer work, and you don't want to take on that many responsibilities

(Speaking from an Army perspective, not sure how other branches do it) A very important point to consider is the fact that unlike Enlisted personnel, Officers do not get to choose their job. You have a "wish-list" in which you write down the different branches you would LIKE to work in, but at the end of the day it is entirely up to the Army. I have multiple friends who went the ROTC route, about 50% of them ended up getting something other than their 1st choice (their 2nd,3rd,4th option). The same can be said with OCS, which utilities an Order of Merit List. The more sought after your branch is, the more competitive it is, resulting in a higher likelihood of the Army switching your branch during OCS.

@@mattfrmdachi From my understanding they use an Order of Merit list as well. Rereading my original post it looks like I was insinuating that ROTC doesn't use an Order of Merit list, which they do. Lots of truth here. When I graduated from OCS in 84 my first choice was Infantry with my second choice as MP. We graduated the same time as the West Point class of 84. So guess what? MP it was..... I was pissed at first coming from Infantry and wanting to stay Infantry. However, it was a good fit for me. The other down sides of commissioning is staff assignments. You don't get to spend you time with the troops all the time. Studs will be in an operations career track...... others will be funneled to staff assignments they may not (mostly don't) want. You are usually the first at the unit in the morning and last to leave. If you have a Psycho Battalion or Brigade Commander your life will suck until the next change of command (had two of those in 29 years of service). If you have the right NCOs they can make your career and teach you things that will gain you respect of the NCOs and soldiers. If you have a crappy NCO your career could be in his/her hands (I had VERY few of the crappy ones). But at least you have a view of the big picture. I was an E-5 when got commissioned and I thank God every day for the experience and wisdom gained from E-1 to E-5.

Pretty good summary. A couple points for clarity though (coming from an active duty warrant officer of 14+ years) Everyone WILL end up at a desk eventually. Less so in SOCOM but it does happen. Most of these jobs still go to the field etc, but leaders have admin responsibilities and the whole DOD runs on PowerPoint and email. NCOs have staff positions they must do time in to remain competitive and in my experience the best NCOs understand how the whole army works. These positions are rough sometimes but they are opportunities to help the dudes on the line. Remember when you had to jump a 120lbs ruck? Chances are that could’ve been avoided by a better plan from higher born from sound advice of an NCO. It is a common misconception that NCOs do nothing but their job. Warrant officers are much closer to that scenario. Another thing to consider though is the broad role you want to have. 1. Do you want to be in front of the formation, develop plans and strategize etc, or would you rather be more behind the scenes making those plans come to fruition? If told to dig a hole would you prefer to decide how best to do and give guidance etc, or would you rather just be a shovel operator? 2. Would you prefer developing the army and accomplishing goals, or developing / teaching people and enforcing standards? Officers lead formations and build plans to achieve the commanders objectives. NCOs execute orders and supervise, train and develop junior enlisted soldiers, enforce standards and discipline and mentor the officers in their formations. Being a junior enlisted soldier sucks by design, but being an NCO is really fulfilling. The officer side is also very rewarding but a lot more thankless and far less forgiving.

I did 6 years enlisted and now I’m trying to get back in the reserves as an officer. Although I 35 years old I can say I wouldn’t go back as an enlisted. With the high cost of living and the growing demand of higher education in both enlisted and commission DOD is going to have to look at updating the enlisted/ officer corps and how benefits and pay work.

@Cookiesrfood 4 жыл бұрын
Yup this is exactly spot on there is a growing demand for enlisted to become more educated I know in the Airforce that you eventually need to get your Associates and Bachelor degrees in order for promotion into the higher enlisted ranks such as Senior NCO ranks so honestly I would join as an officer you get much better pay and a higher lifestyle quality the downside is you have more responsibility to deal with than a typical enlisted member

The video is pretty accurate. As a tank officer I have spent a fraction of my time around tanks and soldiers(maybe 2 year out of 7 years so far). Most of my days are spent stuck on a computer with fellow staff officers. It can get tedious and I jokingly call it my “hamster wheel” but the few opportunities that come when being in command are well worth it. You’ve got to know yourself and see if you care more about money alone or if you want to do a job that you enjoy.

I had some of the same thoughts as a JO. I wanted to be in the field running construction my whole career. The idea of going to DC to be on a staff sickened me. Fast forward a number of years, I enjoyed and learned a ton being on the staff at USAREUR and USARAF. Amazing experience! I have given some of this same advice to my son. Enlisted = doing the cool things. Officers typically, get stuck in meetings, the laptop, reports, etc. However, as an officer you get exposed to so many different things.

Excellent overview as usual. For me the almost unique consideration is to get to the point where I can pin aviator wings on my chest. Being drawn to fastmovers first I can't make my mind whether to go Air Force, Navy or USMC. Warrant Officer is another very interesting career path to consider even if it doesn't take me to a fast jet as it's gonna give me plenty of stick time as a rotor head which opens the door to a world filled with excitement down in the weeds.

While I’m not an ODA team leader, I am currently in ROTC, so let’s me give some advice to anyone looking at the officer route in the Army. First, if you have the opportunity to go to Basic Combat Training, you should go. Many programs out there are small and understaffed. That doesn’t mean the cadre are bad, but only have so many resources to train with. It will make you a better leader for incoming cadets that will look up to you advice and mentorship. Second, you should consider the National Guard Simultaneous Membership Program, even if you want active duty. There’s a lot of learning opportunity there, and you even get E-5 drill pay. Finally, take this seriously. Yes. ROTC is often kind of a joke in smaller programs. Yes, your other cadets will screw up royally. Yes, it will be a drag sometimes. Shut up and deal with it. How you handle this education impacts the lives of men in your command. Don’t be a space cadet LT or Ensign.

Spent 7 years enlisted (USMC), then college and commissioned as an officer for 14 more. Wouldn't trade my enlisted time for anything--provided a tremendous background and foundation I was able to draw on many times. And the time I spend in the enlisted ranks, particularly as an NCO, gave me good insights into the kind officer I wanted to be (seeing both the good and the bad, what earned respect and what didn't, etc.).

Just found this channel a couple days ago. Loving it. I'm currently building a fictional military. There are a lot of things I'm taking liberties with, but that doesn't mean I care to make it up wholesale. I was actually looking for unit sizes when I found you. Your stuff answers so many spin-off questions; you're awesome! I haven't found it yet, but do you have a video explaining the purposes of the many uniforms. I have a branch of my military that has it's own grade schools, reasons reasons stuff blah blah. It's a legit military super power state, kinda like the US in many regards, and they have several of these schools. From cradle to graduation (military education doesn't stop, they just go to a military college) it will have roughly 2000 kids, and I'm mildly struggling with how it would operate, and what ranks would educate who; but I have settled on a Colonel "principal" running the show in each of these schools.
@flyingturret208thecannon5
@flyingturret208thecannon5 10 ай бұрын
Interesting idea! I think in a fictitious setting, a WO or O-2 would be the principal, as opposed to a Colonel. That is, for a high school. For the collegiate theme, I’d recommend modeling it off of the leadership of the real life academies, which I believe is led by a Major. The HS portion for this imaginary branch of service would likely be largely enlisted, hence being led by either a WO or low-rank officer. I find your writing concept to be quite interesting!

Quick correction on the service commitment for officers (from a contracted ROTC cadet). First, not everyone receives a scholarship, but you can still join ROTC and commission. The standard service commitment (out of AFROTC) is four years on active duty. If you get selected for special warfare communities (STO, CRO, TACP) that becomes 6 years, and rated candidates (pilot, CSO, ABM, RPA) sign contracts for 10 years from the day you get your wings. Service academies follow a nearly identical structure, with the base commitment being 5 years instead of 4, however everyone at the academies is on a "full ride" and pays nothing. One cool thing is that even if you get college paid for through ROTC or an academy, you still retain full GI bill benefits once you get out for graduate school or to pass on to your kids. Can't speak to the commitments after OTS/OCS.

I’m gonna say my experience with the Navy outside of SOCOM, green side or elite units is that Officers had VASTLY better QOL, shorter working hours, and more opportunities for training or interesting collaterals as well as better options after leaving. Enlisted on ships might not even get 3 meals a day, my experience in my short time as enlisted in the Surface side was being forgotten, overworked and generally treated poorly. Officers and Chiefs were always taken care of though. Though the surface culture is still pretty backwards so hopefully the other branches aren’t like that.

As someone who has done both I enjoyed being enlisted more. I had fun. I personally say going enlisted then commission. You actually have authority and power as a officer. Quality of living and pay are higher and less people can tell you what to do. I also don't have to deal with a lot of small B.S. that enlisted have too. You are in charge of stuff as a officer and have to give order. Speak and lead. Management vs managed.

2:56 Officers are the military's managers, this is very accurate. Officers are managers. Leadership is found in the enlisted NCO ranks. As an enlisted man, I observed many officers were focused on their own careers and internal officer politics. Leadership was a distance forethought.

I'm 80% sure I'm going to join the Dutch army as a Combat Engineering Officer next year. Because I almost have my degree in mechanical engineering, it's financially/career-wise stupid to join as enlisted. As an officer you won't get to do as many cool military stuff such as blowing up bridges or shooting excercises but it will teach me skills such as leadership and responsibility. And at the end of the day, as an officer, you still get to experience the cool military stuff, albeit less frequent than enlisted personel. I try to think of it in this way: if I had a job outside of the army, I wouldn't get to experience any of it. I need to appreaciate what I can experience.

My 2 Cents: In October I ship to boot camp for the Marine Corps, then I will attend MCT and my MOS school. I have a 6 year reserve contract, and that way I can serve and get a few dollars to help with school, maybe work for some time and get extra work experience. I will be out for one school year, but a small price to pay for around 9000 a school year after to pay all of community college and at least a fair chunk of the remaining total at a 4 year university. That's not counting the couple hundred for working one weekend per month. Once I finish school, I will have the option to pursue my career field, go active, maybe try my hand at special operations if I find that option to suit me more after I finish college, or go to OCS and be a reserve or active officer. If you positively cannot decide, I suggest going to school to give yourself that option, possibly go reserves to start climbing up the ranks a little faster if you choose to stay enlisted, and have six years to think about it. Play your cards right, work hard. and find school suits you, you might even be able to finish a masters degree depending on your major. I'm not saying this is the best plan for everyone. This seemed to be the best plan for me. But the point is, if you plan these things out and keep your doors open, you can't go too wrong. The biggest thing is probably not to just flip a coin in your head and do your research.

I'm at a point in my life where I know I want to go into the military. However reviewing this, it just throws alot of stuff into the mix man. I will be going off to college soon to study computer engineering and computer science. (Double major. 90% similar classes so I thought y not) and I would really like to go in the mos 17A or cyber operations officer. I dont reckon I will be in the military for a full 20 years, however I do feel obligated to serve how i can. I know that taking this mos would be good for post military life because of the high demand for network engineers and cyber security ppl. However I've also got this thought scratching at me to try to do 15A or possibly 11A. The thing that bothers me isnt the fact that I'll have to make a decision on which job to choose. It bothers me on the fact that I will regret not living out one or both of the choices I dont pick.
