I appreciate your watching and sharing your thoughts @luxurylagoon...but we live in a city with plenty of opportunity. Sure, there are low paying jobs in Vancouver (just as with any city) but there are plenty of opportunities for people to earn a very good living in Vancouver. With hard work, drive and ambition people have a chance to earn if that's what they'd like to do. It's not the city that's preventing anyone from earning a good living.

@@LivingInVancouver-BC Yeah, I don't agree. In my field (Digital Marketing), the average salary in Vancouver for someone in my position is between $50-70K CAD. In neighboring Seattle, a city similar to Vancouver in terms of cost of living, the average salary is between $100k-$150K USD. And it's the same with many other jobs in Vancouver, they just don't pay well in contrast to how expensive this town is. I'd move but I have commitments here for the time being.

Sure @luxurylagoon. Comparing to the US is completely different...especially in IT fields. There's no where in the world that pays better than the US (in IT)...But then, you know, you have to live in the US. And then there are many places (like the UK or France for example) that pay less than here. You can certainly anecdotally find positions that pay much more elsewhere. And your particular field is an example of this. No question....but that doesn't mean all jobs are low paying...and my point is that there are still many high paying career options in Vancouver.

@@luxurylagoon everyone’s situation is different though. I earn 350 K ….higher than I would in the US. What digital marketers earn is irrelevant to me. But yes, wages are not where they ought to be relative to costs.

@@LivingInVancouver-BC My wife's concern is about the quality of teaching in schools. We saw a website that ranked Canadian schools on quality and it worried us a little, is this data really important? because we are looking at which city in the metrovancouver we'll move to.

@PauloBristofen No. That data is about as good as the paper it's printed on. BC schools are excellent. If you haven't already, check out my video about schools in Vancouver. Thanks for the video Sebastian. I've done well in Ontario, but I'm done and ready to move. I need a change of location and Vancouver's perfect. We had some issues to deal with the last two weeks so we've been detached from doing our Vancouver research. We are back watching your weekly vids and checking out properties. And it just a month we will be in Vancouver. The biggest draws to Vancouver for us is the air quality. We didn't notice the air quality difference as much, but we noticed the complete lack of stuffy noises while there. The temps are much better. It's the end of April, and it's cold and showing... yep... daffodils and tulips aren't even up yet. The ocean, the mountains, the beauty of the place. You said it right, a sunny moment after a rainy morning is powerful. The laid back attitude. Its perfect. The main worries are the crime. It has gotten out of control here and in Vancouver. I don't want to have to worry about things. :(

Ah. Real estate agent. Explains why. What you should consider instead is: abysmally low wages against cost of living, ridiculous healthcare situation(recently my surgery waiting time exceeded 3.5 yrs, i’m still alive, but barely making it), appallingly expensive and scarcely available housing options, teeth grinding traffic(try morning, afternoon crossings over second narrows or basically anywhere around hw1 choke points) and, of course, addicts, psychopaths and weirdos of hastings(sure, you can turn a blind to, but you taxes will still fund those “programs”). @emilywilliams8447 I hear you! Cost of housing is a struggle in Vancouver for many. BUT, keep in mind that there's no rent control in Alberta (if you are a tenant)...and our property taxes, utilities and car insurance are WAY less expensive (due to those factors Calgary became the most expensive city in Canada last year according to Statscan). Unfortunately, there's no where to hide from inflation these days. Our winters are certainly grey (spring, summer and fall aren't, though). I don't disagree....but I prefer being able to exercise outdoors all year round and exchanging a bit of liquid sunshine for the intense cold and long winters of the prairies. That's obviously a personal preference and not everyone agrees. If you like sun all year round and don't mind the cold I can see that Edmonton could be an attractive option. And you don`t have to look for the homeless people, you`ll find them without trying. and people who have been kicked out of their apartment buildings for whatever reasons like renovictions and these poor people cannot find any affordable housing. What are they to do, oops i said these poor people, but many of them aren`t poor, they have jobs but their jobs salaries didn`t go up by 30% like the rents have in the last few years. So, come on over if you have lots of money. You`ll enjoy everything mentioned in the video.

It's interesting to see the comments and not surprising to see the same issues crop up... cost of living, crime, property/rental prices. Vancouver is a big (but not huge) international city. The same issues can be found in London, Sydney, Auckland, and other western cities of the world. These issues are just a consequence of the popularity of the place. Demand forces prices up, especially for renting and owning real estate. Vancouver at least has the benefit of purpose built rental apartment buildings, where many immigrants (including myself) live. There is a move now to build more of these, after 30 years where Vancouver went mad building condos and allowed developers to make a quick buck, selling them to whoever could afford them, often to someone who used them to store their money (while leaving them empty), creating the housing crisis Vancouver has today. This should have never happened, but it did. It also helped intensify the homelessness and drug issues that we see Downtown. Living anywhere near Downtown is expensive, because demand just outstrips supply. But you can live in other municipalities, close enough to Vancouver (mostly to the south and east) to experience the lifestyle benefits that Seb is talking about. I'm not trying to sell Vancouver to anybody (that's Seb's job), but you must realise that as a highly desirable, international city, with a mild climate and great scenic beauty, Vancouver will unlikely ever again, be truly affordable for all.

@@LivingInVancouver-BC Hey Seb. I was being somewhat literal when saying 'sold'. I mean that's your job as a realtor, and there's no shame in that! :) I don't totally agree with you saying that Vancouver has always been expensive. Pre 2000 the home price to income ratio in Vancouver was about 5. By 2012 it had almost doubled to 10. It seems to be sitting currently about 12. Pre 2000 most other Canadian cities were around 3-5 ratio, and some cities like Winnipeg, Edmonton and Calgary are still at these 3-5 ratios in 2024. You just have to like the cold to live there! :)

Yes, you can live in the suburbs of Vancouver, but it’s a different lifestyle. There are only a few neighborhoods in Vancouver that I truly like, and they are expensive. I’m not a fan of North American suburban living. Ideally, I want to own a place in Mount Pleasant or nearby. By far my favorite part of Vancouver. But for that, I need to double my income and save up some money. Maybe it will happen one day :)
@tims7793
@tims7793 2 ай бұрын
@@nicktankard1244 Yes, true. If you want to live anywhere within the City of Vancouver (Mt Pleasant incl), you'll need deep pockets to pay either the rent or a mortgage. It's like 12 times your annual income to afford to buy the 'average' property in Vancouver. This is why so many people arrive, but then leave within just a few years. Vancouver has a real problem with this turnover. Essential services suffer, because the lower paid staff can't afford to live here.

If they have a small amount x 10 a day, then what? "Harm" reduction.. call it what it is... drug addiction...

@LarryNg-mx8qz I don't think that anyone is arguing that it's not about drug addiction?

Because no one can afford to live there. People want to live there but the reality is you can not build personal wealth starting from nothing

We live in a city. A city is a dynamic, living and breathing thing....so people are always arriving and always leaving. So yes, people are leaving and there are real reasons that people do that. But, Vancouver continues to be one of the fastest growing cities in the country. If you take the time to watch my videos you'll see that I"m not just a chearleader. My channel is about the realities of living in Vancouver. Good and bad...this video just happens to be about the good.

@@patriciabee4690you can definitely build wealth starting from nothing. And people do that. But it’s hard and involves luck for sure.

I left vancouver. If you are a low to moderate income earner you will struggle. You'll pay well over 2 grand a month to rent a run down box of an apartment. Crime and drugs run rampant. You won't find a parking spot ever...anywhere. the cost of everything has skyrocketed. Every park or nice place to visit is so overcrowded you can't even enjoy it. It was once a nice place to live. Beautiful scenery but those days are gone.
