@@xXxFaustoMoraesxXx Close enough with West Georgia. Cambie Bridge used to be wood. And now Granville Bridge north is funnelled to Seymour. Say hello to a premium to bringing a car downtown and less parking spots either the bylaw changing for buildings with the requirement of less parking spaces. Soon it will be bikes, scooters and such. Forget about w/c access they’re 30 years behind. Gonna need a lot better pedestrian infrastructure to get around in a timely manner. As is it takes 2-3 hours to get to and from the burbs whether you’re in a vehicle or taking transit. If there’s heavy weather or traffic issues forget it. Everyone is gonna rely on the delivery to their sanctuary, and retail brick and mortar will resort to being homes or apartments and the stores and/or restaurants will be on the ground floor. People will cocoon more

Hi @alexmanosa6993. Renting is challenging but if you don’t mind a bit of a commute and don’t need to rent a brand new condo then you should be able to find cheaper options. As for crime, i don’t think “increasing” is the reality. Vancouver is very safe…although you have to keep your eyes on your stuff. @LivingInVancouver-BC 5 ай бұрын
I disagree, @mattdemers8773. If you live in Vancouver you know that you can get by without a car...but the video is for people thinking of moving to Vancouver...and THEY don't necessarily know this. It's unusual for a North American city to be so easily navigable without a car. Secondly, I didn't realize that Vancouver suburbs had feelings? In any event, Chilliwack is perhaps better described as an exurb than a suburb...but it's certainly within Vancouver's orbit. Many people have moved out to Chilliwack and still commute in to Vancouver for work. But thank you for watching the video and taking the time to share your thoughts!

Dont forget the West Coast Express from as far out as Mission to Downtown Vancouver for to and from work. Also, we have a lot of one- way streets to navigate in DT Vancouver which can be challenging for newcomers and tourists. For any beach lovers, the beaches in Vancouver are frequently closed due to pollution. Groceries are very expensive also. It's also harder to make friends here for some. As they say, say BC actually stands for "bring cash" 😅
@LivingInVancouver-BC

Great points, @lightseeker134! Thanks for watching and for sharing your insights. It's typically the inner beaches that can close in hot summers due to high E. Coli counts...beaches like English Bay Beach, Sunset Beach, 2nd and 3rd beach and sometimes Kitsilano Beach too. The beaches that have better circulation tend not to have this issue (Wreck, Spanish Banks and Locarno) unless it's a pretty extreme situation.

In reality yes commuting from outside Vancouver is much less expensive when using public transit but add up to two hours so if you work say Burnaby ,you live Aldergrove or outskirts Langley you need to get to the main vain Fraser hwy to catch the bus most of those areas don't have sidewalks so you're walking on the side of the road which can be very dangerous when its darker months , and you start work at 0800 you will have to catch that bus before 0600 then transfer to the Sky train hopefully there are no issues with the sky train and then most places are not close to the sky train some are with in 10-minute walk but in winter months all that train and wind have a good umbrella and maybe a change of cloths hehe that said if you live in downtown places Langley, Cloverdale about 60-70 % of Surrey areas you will be ok just add in about 1-2 hours. hwy 1 brings you very close to Vancouver, hwy 99 turns into Oak street ( which is pretty much a HWY with a different name) which is in Vancouver ;) as of the last 5-6 years we haven't been getting enough rain which is why air quality during the last few summer months has been pretty bad because of forest fires we have been in a water drought for around 5 years water restrictions I think have already started as of this month 05 2024then the mention of bugs hmm we need bugs it helps the balance dont get me wrong I dont like them buzzing around me or biting me but we need them. No bugs mean nature is out of balance, but that is a different topic all together.
@LivingInVancouver-BC
@LivingInVancouver-BC Ай бұрын
@alwayscuriousalwayslearnin That's a good point that the areas outside of Vancouver are definitely not made for walkability. Walking to transit can be much less pleasant (and more dangerous) when there aren't proper sidewalks and lights for pedestrians. But, if you are moving to a suburb to commute by transit it would be best to live as close to a skytrain station as you can.

@LivingInVancouver-BC that's where all the freaks are. DTES/Chinatown. The galleries & punk shows. Graffiti. & if you stand at main & hastings & look in any direction; an increasingly gentrified bland version of Vancouver. East, West & South are all getting condos & yuppies. The DTES remains authentic. Best of all about the DTES; LOW TOURISTS!

Hi @adammoore7930.Well, it depends on which resorts you are referring to. The local mountains (not really resorts) are pretty easily accessible. Grouse can be accessed by public transit. An Uber to Cypress from downtown probably wouldn't be too bad. Whistler/Blackcomb (the only real resort) can be accessed by private bus from Vancouver.

Interesting video because it runs counter to my feelings about contemporary Vancouver. I lived in Vancouver from about 1995 to 2003 or so. It was an okay place to live and was not really that expensive for a renter (although even then the idea of owning a house was out of the question for me). I worked in the architectural field and was always able to find work in good firms but there was no getting ahead. This is probably more about the profession itself than Vancouver although with a constantly inflating cost of living - especially in housing - Vancouver is not an easy place to "settle" in. I find Vancouver now to be quite uninteresting if not soul-less which has a lot to do with how expensive it is - not allowing for small start-ups in retail etc. - there are a lot of chain stores. The drug problem in Vancouver has also led it to become very depressing, and the unfortunate thing is that the ultra left-wing political ideology just makes this problem worse and worse. In my opinion Vancouver is becoming very much like San Francisco. A lot of rich people driving their expensive cars around living in multi-million dollar architect designed houses, no middle class at all anymore, and a lot of poor and struggling people with consequent HUGE AND OVERWHELMING social problems. Weather-wise it is great in the summer and very depressing in the winter due to constant rain, early sunset, and overcast skies. Too bad about the direction this city has taken, and it only gets worse and worse. I don't even like to visit anymore other than to see an old friend. Unless you are a millionaire with a huge stack of established wealth or you are earning huge bucks in the computer or gaming industries, I would not recommend moving to Vancouver. I was recently in Australia and although it is also very expensive, there was nowhere near as many homeless and broken people in either Melbourne or Sydney - and both of those cities are much more vibrant than Vancouver, with waaaaaay better weather. I'm considering moving there, although I'm no spring chicken anymore so it might not be the best idea.
@LivingInVancouver-BC
@LivingInVancouver-BC Ай бұрын
I appreciate you sharing your experience @supermash1, and for watching the channel. I would disagree with you that Vancouver has a "lot of chain stores". This would depend entirely on where you are...but Vancouver actually has a lot of small start-up retailers (and start-ups in general) in areas like Kitsilano, Granville, Cambie, Mount Pleasant, Main Street, Fraser, Commercial Drive and Hastings. This is less the case when you get into the suburbs like Coquitlam or Surrey where chain retailers are more the norm. My own view is that our city is managing the drug/homelessness issue far better than most similar sized and larger cities...but it's easy to point fingers on this one. Being similar to San Francisco isn't surprising. Vancouver actually has always had more in common with West Coast US cities like Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and LA than Calgary, Winnipeg or Toronto. But again, Vancouver has been managing the issues all these cities have been facing in recent years much more effectively. Weather - anything in the northern hemisphere tends to have rain, early sunset and overcast skies...other than the prairies or the far north...think of the eastern seaboard or Europe. We all have that in common. Vancouver at least gets less snow and more moderate temperatures than the rest of Canada (other than Victoria). If you would prefer more sun in exchange for more extreme winters then the prairies might work for you...but that's not a trade-off people that stay in Vancouver are willing to make. Can't argue that Australia is lovely. I hope you can afford it and are allowed to stay in the country, though.

@@LivingInVancouver-BC Well Victoria suits me better than Vancouver for now, although the homelessness / drug addict problem is a huge issue here now. Coddling drug addicts didn't turn out to be that great an idea now did it? But all the lefties (and there are scores of them here on the left coast!) like to have the government agencies cater to the addicts - lots of government money to be had at the trough in the drug addict / homelessness industrial complex isn't there? Can't have enough government "social workers" catering to the drug addicts now can we? I say hey if you want to do crack and meth and crank, well there are going to be consequences aren't there now? And the consequences should be borne by the people who make those choices - not the taxpaying law abiding citizen who is just a cash machine to fund the messes created by them. Victoria has about 1/3 as much rain as Vancouver and a lot more sunshine in winter with equally good summers. Finally, I don't agree that Vancouver is handling it's crippling social problems any better then U.S. west coast cities, that simply isn't true and I suspect you know it, but that doesn't jibe with your real estate interests.
@LivingInVancouver-BC
@LivingInVancouver-BC Ай бұрын
@supermash1 Haha. I think it's pretty clear that we don't agree that Vancouver is handling things better than other cities. It has nothing to do with my "real estate interests". I'm quite open about the reality of living in Vancouver as I see it. Both good and bad. I'm not here to sell Vancouver...I'm here to share what it's like to actually live here. And so I speak my own experience having been born here and lived here for nearly 50 years now. And yes, Victoria does have more sun and less rain (although more wind) than Vancouver. I actually have a video comparing the two cities. Doesn't sound like either Vancouver or Victoria are for you, though?

Last time I walked around near that area I saw an absolutely filthy young guy with a needle dangling from his forehead in an obvious stupor. We weren't even in a particularly bad area. You're trying to tell me that Vancouver (and Victoria) are managing this situation better than other places? That's a good one! Now nurses and doctors are saying they are being assaulted in the hospitals by these people. Great job Vancouver and Victoria! My brother was recently in an emergency room in Victoria and after 10 HOURS of waiting with the junkies to see someone he was finally called in to see a nurse. My dude, chill. Anyone being homeless or drug addicted and faced with a highly vulnerable life on the street is a problem in my view. But these issues are highly visible in a relatively small part of Vancouver (and admittedly some suburbs) but most of the city goes about it’s daily life without being directly affected by or even seeing what you are talking about. The dramatics are a bit much. Spend some time looking at what it’s like in other cities bigger and smaller and again, considering the fact that we handle more than our share of this issue on a Canadian scale, Vancouver is coping with this far better.
