Another good video. I shoot 35, 120, and 4x5. I went through the same thought process when I started 4x5. Felt like I was missing shots due to apprehension on if the shot was worth taking on 4x5. The conclusion I eventually came to is that when I am out with my 35mm or medium format camera, and I see a great composition, I take note of the place, time of day that the light is good, etc, and then go back with my large format kit. So basically I scout compositions before I ever grab the 4x5. I realized I can't treat it like the other formats where I go out with the 4x5 and take pictures as I go. I hope you end up sticking with it.

Glad to have stumbled across your channel. I've become so used to hearing lo-fi on analog videos that it's refreshing to hear the piano backing and watch a video at a gentler pace. Thank you for making and sharing. I've also been experimenting with large format both 4x5 (Wista) and 8x10 (Ansco). Like you, I love the process. I've made a few images that I'm happy with, but agree that my best work is probably on 120. But for me that isn't really the point. I'm using analog cameras because I love the process and tactile experience - it's a moment of calm (except when I'm rushing around with changing light or weather!). If all I cared about was the final image then I would simply be shooting digital for the convenience. I'll say that 8x10 is a different beast though. While the process is the same, everything is much bigger and even more expensive! I use the Ansco for family portraits and special images, but I don't think I would take it out into the wild. Good luck with your journey and I'll keep watching! :-)

Do not stop. You actually have a good eye for photography. If LF photography is going to get you out to observe nature and spend the time to appreciate the beauty around you, then its worth it. The pictures would come as you use it. My recommendation is stay 4x5 as the logistics of an 8x10 is cumbersome plus the cost is astronomical. 8x10 Portra in the US is $30 per sheet. The ONLY slide film that you can buy is the Kodak Ektachrome 8x10 which you have to preorder and its $230 for 10 sheets. For black and white there are a lot of options but they keep getting less and less.

Hi Ryan, A nice thoughtful video. You really highlighted all the plusses that view cameras bring to the photographer, and you express the “slowness” as a positive. So far, that’s definitely a “yes, stick to it”. “Was I happy with the photographs” - you didn’t express dissatisfaction about the results you took, but what seemed like frustration that you only had a few sheets with you each time you went out. Might I suggest u consider getting a grafmatic film magazine? They hold 6 sheets, which cuts down the number of film holders u need to worry about, but it does mean u need to plan in advance what film you are more likely to want on a given shoot. That in itself is not necessarily bad… take 6 sheets of b&w, and one holder of colour slide film, and save the expensive colour for something “really worth it” …. If you’re wondering “should I give up large format” after a year of 4x5, there is no way you should be considering 8x10 as a purchase…. The practical challenges are exponentially larger. I joke that the only justification I would have in getting 8x10 is to “justify” buying a drum scanner…

thanks for watchinng! I usually bring 4 film holders for day trip, but just too serious about each shot which I miss lots of shots.. For 8x10, it has been my dream to see nature through big ground glass; as a experience perspective not because expecting better result 🤣.

My experience with 8x10 was that i went out less with it. Because it is much bulkier and much more expensive i lost my Spontaneity in shooting. Only if you can afford the ultra light chamonix or Arca cameras and the few compact lenses for 8x10 and the very sturdy tripod you will need, then you should go this route. And ask yourself: Do i print in meter size? you will only see the difference if you really print very big. Even a lot 8x10 photographers shooting hybrid these days and prints were made seldom…

@@RYANPARKPHOTOGRAPHY yes very pricey. Add film 4 times cost. Development is not so easy. New backpack, tripod, lenses etc... Much more windage means less opportunities to shoot. Don't rush to 8x10. You have a nearly perfect camera with the Linhof Technika and a well round setup that you give up for... not so much if you don't do contact prints. The capturing is nearly identical. What do you expect that changes? Macro with 8x10 on a light/cheap setup vs a Technika? I know what I would choose..... I do my own 4x5 enlargements and "just upsizing everything" (It is not.a straight upgrade) won't bring me to something really new. LF is for me Tripod and Movements and more looking than taking and it can take years to accept and master. Film size doesn't matter at all.

Hi Ryan , Nice work and very well presented video's! ! I have owned and used, as a pro photographer, since the eighties until today the The Linhof Technika.. It is without any doubt really a fantastic camera that is build like a tank. Having said that for "light travelling" I prefer my Sinar F2. It is a monorail and therefore it takes just a little bit more time to set up., but you can take it folded up, on the monorail, very easily with you. The big advantage of the Sinar is, apart from the much lower price tag that it is a 100% modulair system, that you can really use wide angle lenses with no problem at all and the Sinar F2 offers far greater and better movements than the Linhof. I do have a question: Which Tripod with which head do you use? Keep up the good work....

Hello Ryan, thanks for posting your latest video. I'm in Sydney, if you want to meet up and try 8x10 (or even 5x7) let me know. The jump from 4x5 to 8x10 is HUGE because of the exponential increase in weight and volume of the equipment, not to mention the cost of film and processing. I only use b+w film and process it myself. Several places do 35mm and 120 roll film processing but few do sheet film. Vision Lab in Sydney is the only place I can find in Australia that processes 8x10 in E-6 or C-41 at $28 a sheet (processing only). As for buying 8x10 colour film, I cannot find any Australian sellers that have it in stock or even offer it. A couple have 4x5 though. As far as general size and weight go, 8x10 is more than twice the weight and four times the volume of 4x5. To get a feeling for the size of 8x10 film holders, get four 4x5 holders and arrange them in a 2x2 rectangle. The camera body itself only contributes about a third the weight of a total kit including film holders and tripod. For example, my 3 lens Toyo 810M kit: Fujinon W 210mm f5.6 (equivalent to ~30mm) = 0.6kg Fujinon W 250mm f6.7 (equivalent to ~40mm) = 0.7kg Fujinon NW 300mm f5.6 (equivalent to ~50mm) = 1.1kg 6x Toyo 8x10 film holders (0.7kg each) = 4.2kg Focus cloth, light meter, cable release, etc = 0.9kg f.64 BPX Backpack = 2.9kg Toyo Field 810MII with standard bellows and Linhof lens board adaptor = 6.9kg Innorel ST424C tripod with Luland LD115 head = 3.75kg The total Toyo Field 810M kit is 21kg of which the camera itself is 6.9 kg, less than 1/3 the total. (Note that a Toyo Field 45A weighs 2.8kg, less than half the 810.) A wooden camera may be a couple of kg lighter - I've read the Canham Wood 8x10 is 4.3kg - but will be significantly more fragile than the metal Toyo. Note that a lighter 300mm lens could be used like the Nikon M 300mm f9 (just 300g, but more than 1 stop slower) but a wider lens like the Nikkor SW 150m f8 (equivalent to ~24mm) is 1.1kg and takes huge 95mm filters. Longer lenses like the Nikkor M 450mm f9 (equivalent to ~60mm) are about 600g and are all in big Copal 3 shutters. IMHO 4x5 is a sweet spot for modern large format photography because it's a good size to view on a light box and is easy to scan. If you want to make analog silver prints, 4x5 enlargers are common and easy to use. I do not think there are any working 5x7 or 8x10 enlargers in Australia left (not that there were many even back in the day). The most compelling reason for using anything larger than 4x5 (like 5x7 or 8x10) is for contact printing. Update: to add that Shane Dignam used a Toyo Field 810M for some time, though he now seems to use something else.

Thanks for the very detailed realistic advice! Yes, I expected to have very heavy set up (not for all occasion; but when it need). I have been really enjoying 4x5 as I mentioned in the video, but always wanted to try 8x10 in the nature like Ben Horne or Shane Dignam (I think he use Canham and Toyo!). Toyo looks very nice and good like my linhof but in terms of weight; Chamonix is about 2.9kg which is very attractive but too expensive at the same time. Canham is another option from my research. If you out in the nature with film camera, we should catch up :)

Hasselblad was his choice! Don't be deludes! Hard physical work, contemplation (still trying to breathe again) after dragging that size beast, film holders, meter and that tripod! For what? A few contact sheets, that my phone does better! Big prints! Big Boring Prints! Who has walls to allow big freaking murals.. I am happy on Fridge door!If it makes you truly happy, there must be an easier way! I love small cameras, I love digital. I was a darkroom slave! Did it for all, my professional years , about 40+! Now prints done in minutes while I go for coffee. Those that plan, landscapes shots while wandering, are missing the chance! Come back, either raining like it's the Deluge, hot like a furnace, the trees cut down by KC, for tissues, old quaint buidings bulldozed and it's a parking lot for super duper market. A place selling useless to the mindless! I'm old, I want images NOW! I know about tonality and wonderous dynamic range! But! But I looked at images a certain photographer ,did of a family, over many, years! The look! The feel! Yes Excellent! I think my Leica M3, 50mm Summicron! He 'said' LF! I think not! Enjoy !

Inspire to learn how to see instead of inspiring to any 8x10 view camera.. Any camera is merely a tool as a means to an end. There are those who do photography for the "gear" and experience of using "gear", others are creative image making centric where any camera is merely a tool to achieve their creative goals. Deeply ponder how can going up in sheet film size improve the expressive quality of your images to any viewer... and no, more "sharp" saturated color and all those highly valued visuals photographers tend to aspire to alone can never invoke deeper view involvement and enduring emotional response. Honestly, going up in sheet film format size will NOT improve your image making, it will Greatly increase your cost per sheet, size, bulk, resources required per image made. Mastery of using a view camera means mastery of ALL camera movements and being able to visualize the image before the camera appears. This means knowing what lens focal length and type, tripod position and all related to achieving the image goal long before camera set up. Land scape images are not demanding on camera movements, indoor-studio, architectural, macro and similar images can be extremely demanding on view camera images. Do try all these non landscape image making challenges with a view camera as they serve as an excellent teaching tool. Learning how to see in black and white is another required skill that is part of creative-expressive image making. Color is much about emotion, yet without form, composition, light/shadow images made lack a proper foundation for expression.It is highly suggested to make many images using B&W and developing at home or darkroom instead of limiting sheet film images to color. B&W is lower cost per sheet compared to color and B&W tends to enforce the fundamentals of composition, form, light/shadow and proper exposure.. Inspiration.. @rupunzel6299
@rupunzel6299 11 ай бұрын
@@RYANPARKPHOTOGRAPHY Camera brand/type should never be the prime consideration for any view camera. It is your image goals followed by lens types that drives camera choice. Unlike digital or roll film box camera where they are limited to brand compatibility, view cameras are essentially a light tight box that is flexi in the center with a lens mount on one end of the box and a place for ground glass and film holder on the other end. The current fashionable view cameras are Chamonix considered the "desirable light weight field folder" with the Intrepid being low cost entry camera.. all this ignores the many, many other field folders made-produced over the many decades. IMO, for hiking, your current 4x5 Technika works as it is a reasonable trade-off. For 8x10, expect the outfit weight to go up by a factor of 4x or more. This is due to all other stuff related to being able to make 8x10 images. Camera is a small part of the overall outfit weight/bulk. Essentially, 8x10 is NOT a good sheet film format for hiking at all regardless of camera/lens/tripod/number of film holders chosen due to it's inherent size/weight/bulk and all related. Or the camera can weight 2Kg and the entire outfit still weights over 20Kg.. Then comes lenses for 8x10, modern plasmats like your Schneider will be 300mm ( normal focal length for 8x10) or longer. This means a# 3 shutter which is MUCH larger than the# 1 shutter on your current Schneider and the lens itself is greatly larger. Typical 300mm plasmat has a 95mm to 105mm front filter size. To equal the 210mm your current focal length on 8x10 would be about 450mm. If you think the 300mm modern plasmat is huge, a 480mm modern plasmat is huge_er in every way. Typically front filter size becomes 112mm.. Alternative is to use f9/f11 APO process lenses which outperforms the modern plasmat in every way. None of these long focal lenght lenses are low cost today due to the number of foto hobbyist wanting to do 8x10.. In all examples, 8x10 film is a pricy endeavor today. The other question that must be answered, what prints are to be made from 8x10 film? Realty is, there are few if any 8x10 projection enlargement facilities today. That era died decades ago. Scan then digital, 8x10 has little advantage as smaller sheet film formats can easily exceed the capabilities of scanned digital files (drum scanned 4x5 can exceed 1GB easy). The only place today where 8x10 film makes any print sense is contact prints and alternative print process like platinum or carbon printing where a direct contact print negative is required. Even so, many make large film negatives from digital files for contact printing.. Ask again, what are your print goals and how does 8x10 film fit into this print making goal? Fact and reality is, many photographers view 8x10 as the "ultimate" film format. Reality is, 8x10 is not the ultimate film format and is full of extreme limitations. Much like a decadent dessert after a great meal, once that experience is done, repeating that experience too many times becomes dull and burdensome in every way. If you're bent on going up sheet film size, the best trade-off sheet film is 5x7/13x18cm. With camera related gear slightly larger than 4x5, best choices of lenses of any sheet film format and modest increase in overall outfit weight trading off little if any image quality over 8x10 and there is far less film flatness issues with 5x7/13x18cm compared to 8x10 and the film holders are less than 1/2 the size of 8x10. It is the near ideal LF film format. The current view camera are a Linhof 23s Technikardan, bag and standard bellows, 6x9 super rollex back, 55mm f4.5 Grandagon, 75mm f4.5 Grandagon, 105mm f4.5 Super Topcor, 127mm f4.7 Kodak Ektar, 180mm f4.8 Sonnar, 270mm f5.5 Tele Arton, Minolta spot F, 100mm square filter set with a special made on camera filter holder and all the related view camera stuff. The Technikardan offers full camera movements front and rear, stability of a monorail, no issues with using wide angle lenses with no limits on camera movements.. For 5x7 outdoors, Sinar Norma with Sinar shutter, standard and bag bellows, 115mm f6.8 Grandagon, 165mm f6.8 Angulon in barrel (or 150mm Super Symmar XL, copal shutter), 10" or 12" Kodak commercial Ektar in barrel, 19" f11 Goerz APO artar in barrel. 6 film holders, Minolta spot F, 100mm square filter set on Sinar filter holder and all related view camera stuff. Monorails are highly preferred over any field folder due to camera movement abilities, ease of switching over to a bag bellows and overall stability. With the Sinar, it is modular and can be made up to nearly any view camera configuration as needed. Weight/size wise, not different enough over any lighter weight field folder. Both cameras go on a Berlebach wood tripod, Linhof 23s Technikardan gets a GItzo three-way head, Sinar Norma gets a Sinar pan-tilt head. Both cameras live in fitted cases that is wheeled around in a pull-along wagon. There is no possible way they will be carried.
