CHARITY STARTS AT HOME, take care of you and then you can help others. Make no mistake, NO multimillionaire should be telling you to give when you are still climbing out of a ditch as they cast ignorance upon you. TAKE CARE OF YOUR HOME, Then you can take the next step.

When I was NOT rich I was a big brother, there are always way to give (work at a food bank twice a year) and I am not talking about money. But the more you have USUALLY the greedier you become... keep that in mind.

As a young man whos 30% of my check goes to taxes, many of which goes to handouts to needy people, does the 10% donation even make sense?

@@IJoeAceJRI America. Massive amounts go to social security, welfare, wic, food stamps ect. Even now they're inflating the dollar to hand out stimulus checks; all of which is another major silent tax.

Henry makes a great point and it would be interesting to hear Dave's response to the question. In his tax bracket he is already giving 10% or more in assistance. What percent of a churches intake goes to people in need?

@@Zorcon741 Not really. If you do the math, most taxes go into military. Welfare is actually really small. You are making it as if we have universal income here.

@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303 my point is that we no longer live in a time where crippled and blind are homeless. We have massive safety nets largely because of taxes. Wherever the 10% rule came from I don't think it would be as relevant today. Not to say that we shouldn't give to churches or be generous

Volunteer at homeless shelter Volunteer with a fire department Volunteer with a ENS squad Make a meal for someone in your community who is less fortunate or is struggling Find items around the house that you can do without that my bless someone else

Never really understood the drive to give while trying to get thru the baby steps. If you have tons of money and don't know what to do with it, that makes sense, most of us just trying to get thru life and pay off our debts. If someone is desperately in need, that makes complete sense to help them.

Because from a purely financial perspective, giving makes zero sense. Giving has no financial value, but it does give yourself personal value, which is what Dave believes in and why it resonates with his audience. Also, rich people don't say things like "I have too much money and don't know what to do with it." It implies you don't know where your money is and how to budget it out.

Religion was created by man for control and power. But charity is great. I do give but the Church will never get my money. Just this summer my kid had a lemon aid stand and all proceeds went the the RED PANDA charity. I paid for all supplies and we used Newman's Lemonade. I had one rule for my kid to do this... every penny we collected goes to the charity that my kid choices. I also did this to show my kid about giving. But I have to say I give more "stuff" and "time" then "money"

There are multiple ways to give, i.e. time and money. Helping others in my opinion is the desired end state of tithing, so you could do that either by giving money to worthwhile charities or volunteering your time for helping others.

Be a cheerful giver. If the church you attend say you have to give 10%, you are in the wrong church.

@@summerrr1 Do you eschew eating shellfish or pork products or cheeseburgers? Do you check the labels on your clothing to make sure that they are not made of mixed fibers? Do you stone adulterers? Kill witches? Abstain from exerting yourself or traveling on the sabbath (Saturday)? Every religious group within Christianity picks and chooses parts of the Old Testament to follow.

Feel good for people to take the money you give and have no problem doing it. There are people that will throw food you give them in your face if it's not cash. What feels good to me is volunteering my time/energy for Habitat putting up walls ceilings and hanging drywall with the individual receiving the home next to me working as well and possibly learning a skill. Also family first before any of this.

First of all it all starts out with understanding that God owns it all and everything you have been given. Yes there should be a small portion that you have in your budget for the Lord . Luke 16:10 would be a good reference to all of this right now.

10% is not legalistically the case. I do think that 10% is a great place to start with. It's a small percentage of your income, it's easy to calculate, etc. The take-home point that I see in scripture is that Christ wants us to be generous always. It's not about specific numbers or one specific number. It's about an attitude of generosity and willingness to be giving. 10% was an Old testament thing. It's a great easy starting point, yes. And I do think within the church community suggesting that people start by giving 10% is the easiest thing to do. But if you got somebody super broke and baby step two and they are barely making ends meet to pay the bills there's definitely conversations to be had about giving back with your time and other resources, for that period.

Weird thing is that people still believe in religion when they had to update it. If something is updated, it is susceptible to lies. If I were Christian, I would be playing by the Old Testament no matter how barbaric it was.

Sounds okay to be giving while your paying off debts. You just have to put it in the budget and be reasonable and not outlandish. If your working hard towards it, soon you you can increase your generosity.

Tithing isn’t necessary though. All OT laws were wiped out after Jesus came, died, and rose from the grave. Now, God still wants us to be generous. Personally I practice the principle of 1st fruits. I’ve asked God how much he wants me to give and I give. The rest I get to live off of. The actual dollar amount does not matter, what matters is your heart.

Being held accountable to the OT laws is gotten rid of. Does that mean you shouldn't follow the 10 commandments? Absolutely not. But just like Paul said, if you're going to use the law for your salvation then follow it perfectly

I’m not an evangelical Christian 10% seems like a lot to give... is that after tax? I suppose you can claim it. Still seems high to give for a business to sustain themselves.

It is lossy goosy... and can be interpreted in many ways. As so many say... make sure you are OK... INCLUDING 15% in retirement before you even consider giving your cash away. I don't believe in this nonsense but I haver planted about 100K trees, I have cleaned windows of people who were on social security (very old people's windows), and we donate ALOT of everything (cloths, furniture, sporting equipment, etc... ) twice a year the the VETS cause they pick it up and TAKE EVERYTHING :). I also coach (which costs me money!!!)

So in this episode we are being told to give freely to a preacher, while in other episodes we are told not to give to parents, siblings, etc., at least without many strings attached. Guess I have a different take on Christ’s message….

@@lmnop01 I will, if the issue ever comes up. But the matter of tithing raises questions, does it not? Like, what is the purpose of tithing in the modern age? Until recent times the church was the social safety net for the community. They were the primary caregivers for the destitute, and helped to alleviate hunger and suffering. For better or worse (I think worse) governments have taken over this role to a large degree. Is there still a moral obligation to give the same amount to the church, under those circumstances? Do we owe a greater duty to our church than we do our kith and kin? What about injured Samaritans we encounter in our life journeys? Dave Ramsey seems to prioritize donations to the church, at least in the early stages of debt reduction. What is the difference between monthly payments to organized religion while in debt, and monthly payments for a car? Selflessness, I suppose ( unless you harbor the belief that you will be rewarded for your good acts, in which case it is not selfless at all).

Dave didn't say you shouldn't give money to family. He said you should not LOAN them money. He also said you shouldn't enable bad behavior. Giving your dad 200 bucks when you know he has a gambling problem doesnt help you or your dad.
