The reason GT “looks older” is because the video you watched uses the standard definition versions for OG and GT’s openings, but uses the 2014 HD Remaster for Z’s. DBZ’s remaster does make it look “more modern” but it fucks up the artwork and crops it to widescreen so it’s actually worse.

Definitely start with OG Dragon Ball. You have to watch my boy Goku as a kid and grow into the man that people still talk about 40 years later. His journey is definitely amazing.

Goku is a loving dad and he does love fighting a lot but he always protects his family when they need to be protected and sadly i can't say a lot since i would be spoiling you but Goku is someone who grew up in the mountains all alone after his Grandpa died so he always was a bit dense with everything like he never even saw a girl until Bulma rammed into him with a bike. The DBS Anime did make Goku way dumber and more childish than he was in Z and that is one of the flaws of anime. Luckily the manga does a way better job. But yeah just know it's mainly a meme that Goku is a "bad dad" he isn't the best but he is not bad at all.

While Goku isn't a deadbeat per se (the otherworld tournament excepted), there were a couple of times he went out for milk for way longer than necessary. As in literally "Hey can we get Goku back home?" "No can do, he does not want to come back."

If you ever want to start DB you have to start with OG DB. People ignore it just because it either didn't air when they were watching Z or Z was just their first time watching DB. OG DB does have some weird pervy stuff and it sadly didn't age well but if you can gloss over it you will find an amazing show and you would see the journey of many characters. DB started off as a goofy adventure story but it is only for like the first couple arcs and then it goes into the martial arts stuff and many fights that DB is of course known for. Z is Goku and his friends after that journey and it obviously goes beyond anyone would've ever imagined. But you don't need to watch Z you can watch Kai instead since it's just Z but with way less filler and even better voice acting for both the dub and the sub. GT is a non-canon sequel that is not well received by most of the DB community. You can still watch it if you want but none of it matters at all outside of you would recognize the characters in some of the games. Super is the canonical sequel but the catch with Super is there are 2 ways to read/watch it. The manga and Anime both follow the same story but because the Anime was actually ahead of the manga it had to take liberties and follow that story in its own way. The manga first started off as a promotional manga for Super but then it became so popular that they just kept continuing it and now the manga is way ahead of the Anime since the Anime stopped airing in 2018. The Z movies are all non-canon except for the last 2. The last 2 Z movies are now technically Super movies since the Anime and manga adapted those movies. The Super movies are all canon too and there is 1 special that was before Kai aired that is also canon. And finally Super Dragon Ball Heroes is just an arcade card game in Japan and has no relevance at all when it comes to the main series and is just fun what if and original stories that take place in a Dragon Ball card games. It has a webseries that promotes the game.

Tbh Vegeta does take a lot of L's but without him helping out Goku many times, Goku's L list would be even bigger and Goku's L list is already massive too. And Goku mostly wins with help and barely has solo wins.

If you are confused why dragonball z doesnt seem familar yet familiar, its because in the US and Canada we had a unique english op, US and Canada had their own unique ops. I forgot what the name of the song for canada, but for the US its Rock the dragon. It takes some visual snippets from the original dbz jp op but added their own stuff to it. I remember watching dbz when I was very very young in 2004 i believe? I watched 8 or 12 eps and remember that op so clearly even though I havent watched it in 20 years. and then ran into dragonball z kai in 2012. I was so excited to watch it to see the upgraded art, but unfortunately only the op and ending were redone, but the show was the same 😂 but they removed all the filler! but when dragonball z kai came to the west, they kept the same song and op visuals untampered. Just had the singer sing it in english but no new lyrics.

Gohan is the teenager, the goku look a like is his brother go ten. Both are gokus kids. The other biy is trunks who is vegeta and bulmas son. The older trunks look like trunks from the future.

What you should start at is Dragon Ball. Starting at Z is like starting a third of the way through the story. The original series in the comic is just Dragon Ball from what the anime calls Dragon Ball to the end of what the anime calls Z. They just change the name partway through the anime to try and get more of an audience from a name change. Dragon Ball and Z are one series. And if you're talking about "goofiness" that's all throughout the series. Every part of it has mixtures of adventure and comedy and fighting. Personally the song I always heard growing up was Makafushigi Adventure (the first show's opening) since I watched VHS tapes my parents had of the original show from Japan before it was airing in America.

You have to start with dragon ball, it's one of the funniest shows i've ever watched especially back when they didn't have to worry about being politically correct

If you do start with Z, I highly reccomend you watch DBZ Kai. It removes a majority of the original's filler, and has better voice acting (Until the Buu saga)

Man what a shame that the second DBZ opening turned out to be such false advertising. It presented Gohan as the new main character, which was a great direction to take the story after the previous arc, but manga readers knew that Goku would quickly be brought back due to popular demand. The franchise has imo suffered permanent damage because of this.
