As a follow up. Is it better to use pairs of 6v batteries or 12v batteries in a 12v system What are rhe pros and cons of each?

6V are usually a better-built battery often having double the cyclelife of a 12v equivalent (comparing a Trojan T-105 to a Trojan TMX)

Golf Cart are tough and using two Golf Cart batteries in series, is a very good solution for a deep cycle application.

I'd advise adding hydrocaps like flow rite and a battery box. The caps make maintenance a breeze (squeeze a hand pump a coupla times a year) and the float valves make them fairly sealed. The only spill risk is if the boat heels drastically while the cells are in absorption. ie if you're motor sailing or pulling a tow turbine. Or if they are overfilled (filled at low SOC). Electrolyte in rare circumstances can come out the pressure release valves.

Best practice is to select the cell size big enough to give you the amp-hours you need and then connect in series to get the required voltage. It is never a good idea to connect cells in parallel because they all float at slightly different terminal voltages. Best option (IEEE recommended practice for batteries) is cells in series which allows each cell to float at its own voltage. Space limitations might make the “all cells in series” option not feasible.

because watts doesn't depend on the system voltage or what the charger is doing I can use a direct comparison in watts between a 48V system and a 12v.
