A bindi is considered a sign of marital status of a woman in India. But what happens when her spouse passes away? Should widows stop wearing one? Should all the colour be drained from a widow's life? Has she no right to live her life?
There is more to a bindi than just being a status symbol. This talk explores the science behind the bindi and why women should be allowed to dress the way they desire irrespective of their marital status. Subhashini Vasanth is the Founder Trustee of Vasantharatna Foundation, started in the memory of her husband, Col. Vasanth V, who was awarded the Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) in 2008 for his selfless, supreme sacrifice while fighting terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir. Her own personal loss motivated her to start the Foundation, to create a support system for the well-being of families of soldiers martyred in the service of the nation. She was recently awarded the Neerja Bhanot Award in 2016 in recognition of her work for the foundation.
Subhashini is an eminent Bharatnatyam exponent known for her intense abhinaya and immaculate footwork. She has performed in several dance festivals, both in India and abroad and is acknowledged by critics and connoisseurs alike.
She now divides her time performing, teaching, spending time with her daughters and reaching out to other families like herself. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Most of the cases women themselves are their worst enemies. Most of them get sadistic pleasures by demeaning & ridiculing their counterparts. Kudos to you Subhashini, more ppl like you should come out & fight fiercely against such practices. Very Well artuculated.

ok. first of all, logically, do u guys think a woman would want to rejoice that her husband has died? Obviously no woman would. Right? Secondly, wearing bindi not only activates the ajna chakra but also shows the sign of happiness and rejoicing as a married woman. But when your spouse has died, do you really wanna rejoice and forget the fact that you now are a woman without a husband? Is this the respect you give to your deceased husband? Is this the love you still have in your heart for him? Death is not something you rejoice, it something that has to be accepted and moved on from. And lastly if the society looks down upon widows, it's time that you fight. Remember, "Never let the opinion of others consume you" You follow what is right and what is respectful to the others around you. Do not look down upon yourself just because the society is telling you to do so.

Women wear a bindi, bangles, flowers since before their marriage. Not because it's something the husband gave . Just because he is gone doesn't mean the lady's life is over. She can take all the time to grieve but if she wants to move on and start living her life then she has every right to start wearing if she wants to. Husband's usually get married without seeming to grieve much for the wife. Depends on case to case basis bro. No need to shame them for wanting to move on and start living .
