Why does he not indicate what the correct ruling on the Weber try was? What is he avoiding... why don't you show the Steyn tackle in real time... trying to avoid the truth of terrible officiating? Shifting blame to the Waterboy? Refs not explaining the rulings... Why are the players not entitled to refer a decision for a review... works well in Cricket... Bryce Lawrence and Darryl Harper would have had no career with DRS...

@@wildripeach1 as a Sarra myself, I don’t like the water boy antics either… really don’t want to see that start to come into our game - football has enough of rubbish like that. 100% on the Steyn tackle though, so clear that he strips the ball in the tackle but every non Saffa seems to ignore that - apart from the Aussies who seems to also hate the whole deliberate knock on interpretation…

What's the point of "reviewing" these decisions if you're not going to do an in depth analysis them? Particularly, the potential knock-on try. Even the Frans Steyn tackle where he clearly stole the ball in the tackle before hitting the ground.
@alexwhite5944
@alexwhite5944 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Title is rather misleading considering he just tells us what happens rather than whether the try should have been sent for review based on the specific incident - 9 times out of 10 I would have expected an incident as chaotic as that to be reviewed, many are reviewed for far less. The TMO could be heard on the broadcast and he said something along the lines of "it travelled backwards". A commentator then immediately said, "well I don't know how it travelled backward off his forearm". While it was an SA commentators, you'd think it warrants a look, but it seemed like the forearm was totally ignored, just the initial contact after Etzebeth. Nigel hasn't been afraid to give his own opinion on some decisions before... funny why he doesn't here. He also describes the Frans Steyn incident extremely vaguely... doesn't even sound like the same tackle. Seems very clear that it was ripped before... Steyn should have been awarded a penalty. Finally, I think the ref, Carley, did have a very good game all round. He had great communication, good control and he wasn't afraid to penalise either team, but especially the ABs, in the dying minutes - something most refs historically are hesitant to do, e.g. SA Craig Joubert. But, his consistency was strained. In the last few minutes of the game, he gave a penalty to the ABs (after the SA drop goal) for not rolling away when the tackle area was essentially clear. Earlier in the game he had been telling players to "leave it" or "roll". But here he hesitates, sticks out his arm halfway and then commits. But then rather than play advantage he immediately blows the penalty. Something he had been reffing consistently throughout the game, probably changed because of the scoreline and time of play - both essentially refereeing cardinal sins. But bear in mind, this lack of proper review probably is none of Nigel's doing. I doubt he has any conflict about the decisions or what he believes should/shouldn't have happened. But being on a World Rugby channel discourse will always be limited when it comes to the officials... a pity, because clearer interpretation and evaluation would help the game so much.

Hi Darren. Remember that this is World Rugby speaking through Nigel Owens' mouth. Out of them serving their own self interests (and probably him not wanting to bury a referee), you probably won't be hearing too much in-depth analysis from him. The best that you can hope for is him saying that offence X is blown in this way, so that means the ref saw maybe that the daylight rule has been violated, or something.
@jaymeister4850
@jaymeister4850 2 жыл бұрын
@@asezangozo1914 They not only sponsor the show, they own the channel. So yeah, he is beholden to them. Also, there is the matter of the reffing fraternity to be considered. I don't think Nigel wants to attack any ref and even if he wasn't beholden to Wolrld Rugby, he would probably not be burying the ref, even if a wrong call had been made.

The one time a South African tackler was penalised for not releasing was one of the few instances where they shouldn't have been. There were bad calls for both sides but South Africa got away with murder at the breakdown. Damian de Allende should've been yellow carded, not sure why anyone thinks a penalty was harsh, he wasn't going to catch that, he had to fall over to intentionally knock it on. 3 on 1 situation after that for the defender.

Hi Nigel. I disagree with the F steyn Penalty. A ruck starts when a players knee touches the ground then there has to be day light before the ball is ripped . If you watch the game you can see F steyn rips the ball before any part of McKenzie touches the ground. F Steyn ruled the ball while they were both still in the air which is just play on and a fair steal . In actual fact McKenzie tries to play the ball once F Steyn has ripped it so that should have been a penalty to Sa

That ball was forward and then you don't have the guts to call a spade a spade. If it was done by South Africa Im sure you would have made a more clear call on what the ref should have done. We cant let it seem like the ref made a decision that benefited NZ can we? About the deliberate knock on... Why on earth do we still have rules where refs interpret it differently? Those rules should either be removed or made clear. Simplify the game.
@jaymeister4850

Owens is beholden to World Rugby (it is their channel) and they would hardly allow him to speak out against any ref. Furthermore, Owens is not going to speak out against a ref on his own volition, I suspect due a sense of loyalty towards them. As for "interpreting" the rules, sadly that will not change. This is how the legal system works as well - certain judges can interpret certain legislative directives to mean different things. The reason why things work in this way is that it is impossible to write a rule for everything that can happen in a rugby game (or in law). So there are tons of things that may not have a bullet point law written for. In such a case, the referee (or judge, in my example) has to examine a certain incident and apply the laws that may apply.

Since whistle watch has stopped showing video of incidents and just using a couple of still photos, Nigel’s descriptions/interpretations are lesser and harder to understand. Why can’t World Rugby get the rights to the small amounts of footage required?

Nigel I have an important question! Do you think Rugby laws are getting unnecessarily complex and ruining the flow of the game so making it dull to watch and difficult to follow as a new fan?

Enjoyed the series a lot , but Nige is sidestepping the hard questions in this weeks episode regarding the Boks vs All Blacks game. Come on Nige, you are better than that, thought you would really speak your mind now that you are retired , but seems World Rugby still has you by the balls a bit.

Deliberate knockdown rule has to go. Only penalize the player if he leaves his feet, ie dives to try knock the ball down NFL style.
@RugbyGuide
@RugbyGuide 2 жыл бұрын
Easier way is to go with slap down = pen+, tip up = attempting to steal, so knock-on only. You're almost never going to get it with hand facing down (unless over your head). Where amazing intercept try can be yellow card and even penalty try if you're off by a centimeters is a bit daft (maybe the passer should have done a better job if there was a clear overlap!)

@@RugbyGuide yeah I’m fine with looking at the motion of the hand actually. Downward motion = penalty, anything else just a knock.

I think it's a silly rule it puts a lot of players off going for intercepts just in case they don't get it just make it a knock-on and carry on like the old days

replays show was a knock on off Moody's arm - below the elbow - see TASanalytics here for eg - Moody's arm also very invisible during RWC19 scrums when it hit the deck unpenalised at least 4 times during pool match v Boks
