Should We Address the Gender Wage Gap? Kadie Ward Philp vs. Allison Schrager

American women are, on average, paid 84 cents for every dollar men make, according to the Department of Labor. This wage gap has persisted despite near-record rates of women’s participation in the labor market, with wage gaps even larger for women in minority populations, and it’s estimated that pay parity will not be achieved until 2052. Should policy interventions address these disparities, or is it more important to recognize and honor women's personal decisions and find another way to look at the gap Those in favor of fixing the gap see it as a point of fairness and equity that would bring economic benefits, such as enhanced family incomes and increased productivity, and say that new policies are needed urgently to dismantle systemic barriers stopping women from earning more. Those who aren’t in favor argue wage disparities reflect individual choices regarding career paths, work-life balance, and tenure, rather than systemic discrimination. They also point out that when adjusted for factors like job type, hours worked, and career breaks, the gap significantly narrows.
Against this backdrop, we debate the question: Should We Address the Gender Wage Gap?
Arguing Yes: Kadie Ward Philp, Commissioner and Chief Administrative Officer of the Pay Equity Commission of Ontario
Arguing No: Allison Schrager, Pension Economist, Bloomberg Opinion Contributor & Senior Fellow at the Manhattan Institute
Guest Moderator: Nayeema Raza, a Journalist at New York Magazine and Vox

This was a really unfortunate episode that has turned me off of this channel. I don't know how you can claim that you are for open debate when you pick a very biased moderator who spent much of the time arguing on behalf of the yes side as well as taking questions from people who are almost exclusively supportive of the yes side. If anyone is reading this comment, I'd skip this one if your goal is to hear an honest debate on this subject.

Bingo. Moderator was extremely biased

Yep, I came here to comment the same thing. I didn’t once hear the moderator “jump in” to clarify or defend the No side. The fact the moderator was from Vox told me enough unfortunatly.

I agree, it's gone way downhill since they stopped calling it Intelligence Squared.

The wage gap is based on choices, not discrimination. Nothing to see here, move along.

Let’s also talk about how women are now making more money than a lot of men in the same fields because they have complained so much about an issue that doesn’t exist. Women work less hours, less over time, take more time off and leave, etc, etc, etc.

Moderator was garbage in this one. Total bias towards an obviously flawed argument.

There is no gender wage gap. There is only an earning gap. Women are paid just as much as men, for the same work, they simply do not earn as much as men. It is illegal to pay someone differently based on gender alone. If there really was pay discrimination, don't you think, in the US of all places, that those companies would be being sued out of existence? The reality is, that no one is being discriminated against. Women (on average, over their entire working life) simply choose not to earn as much as men.

Welcome to open to debate. On tonight’s stage we’ll be debating over the whether women should remain behind men by 20% in terms of pay, and leave this gaping hole unaddressed, or whether this massive disparity and clear disadvantage women face every day should be dealt with. We’ll also have a cast of experts, including a journalist from feminist today magazine, MSNBCs women’s reporter and celebrator of DEI, and some other women who think this conversation is already over and are asking what solutions to the pay gap can be put in place, instead of asking genuine questions of the panelists. So let’s begin tonight with the question “Should the horrid and despicable situation we find women in regarding pay be fixed, or should we let them wither and die on the vine?”

Is taking endlessly about the gender wage gap addressing it? For the "yes" team, there was no actual plan given to address it other than simply talking about it.

because there is no solution, men and women are biologically unequal

Thank you to Alison for being brave and saying what the research is, and what the majority of the population actually think (including women)

How about instead of, or perhaps in addition to, universal childcare we simply help unburden so many women of the responsibility of raising kids by themselves by reforming child support and custody norms, vis a vis awarding primary custody to more fathers and defaulting to female custody less often. Then women can start paying child support more, and see how much more of our pay we're actually left with each month.

Kadie claims culture steers women toward low-paying jobs that devalue women, yet she forgets all the male-dominated jobs that pay low and aren't valued highly, like construction workers, trash collectors, soldiers, auto body repair, pest control, welders, roofers, etc - jobs that are usually more dangerous than female-dominated jobs. She also forgets that women are biologically more drawn to fields requiring high empathy and interpersonal skills, like nursing, teaching, HR, veterinary medicine, etc, while men are biologically more inclined toward fields dealing with objects & concepts vs. people, like tech, banking, plumbing, etc. It's easy to sling conspiratorial claims that the pay gap was intentionally done by evil men, but the reality is more nuanced. If the pay gap ever flipped and men were paid less than women - which may happen, since college students are increasingly female - i'm curious if Kadie would support closing that gap.

indeed: infact further more egalitarian countries find a larger gap between men and women

I love the phrase "burden of childcare". No wonder the birth rates are dropping when children are considered "burdens" instead of parenthood being a pleasure.

It's unfair how much more Askenazi men make over African American women. This should be brought into the spotlight, looking into institutional over representation.

9:15 this is disproven by research , countries with higher social welfare nets and paid family leave have even larger gaps between mena nd women, like sweden for example

I get the feeling that the above comment by “McP1mpin” should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s not my field of expertise but your effort is appreciated.
