If you are taking votes, I would vote for you to save an existing chateau instead of building a new one. There are so many beautiful places that need to be saved.

There are 1000's of abandoned Chateaus in France he could "save", but it's not his job to do that! France has so many do's and don'ts on what can be done to an existing Chateau that FRANCE won't even save them themselves and the buyers have to jump through hoops to preserve them. Look at all the graffiti that is all over the ruins! The French government would rather see them go to ruin. He should concentrate on building a family home like he said after he completed the not so PASSION project. Poor Anna will do whatever Edd wants because she is so compassionate. This building IS NOT building our own place as Anna stated, it's a piece of forgotten overgrown pile of shite! All of you who vote to renovate have no money involved to lose or contribute to the restoration.

The thing about restoring an old chateau as opposed to building from new is that if you want to build in stone it would be astronomically expensive and hard to source and a lot of the woodworking skills and other artisan skills just aren't around anymore or are far too expensive to employ. It was so much fun looking at this ruin although, it is always hard on the heart to see them that way.

I think you should restore a chateau. Mainly because you can. Anyone can build a house that looks like a chateau. A real chateau will have history and a story and you will preserve and save it. You have all the skills and resources to do it.

@@valeriejohnson5283 Only problem is, a chateau cannot be just anywhere, it is a property of land that has had a noble residence back in time immemorial, otherwise if you want to build something similar of your own where ever you want, even a 100m from a ruin, it's a mansion.

Sometimes they are too far gone. I bet this one is. It's such a shame. I wouldn't build a new build in this economy. Love watching you both in whatever you choose to do. In my last trip to France, there are many chateaus, farmhouses etc that have been abandoned in better shape then this ruin.

It's not too far gone. Have seen others far worse than this one brought back to life. Visionaries see the potential, work and the outcomes. There are many such properties currently under reconstruction.

If local codes mandate that the building be restored to its original condition/appearance, I would guess it’s too far gone for that. If the still-existing structure can be adapted into more modern construction (assuming it’s structurally sound), then I would think it might be a project worth tackling.

It would be really interesting, maybe, to save the lower walls, doorways and windows and turn it into a nice little museum. It could still have a nice garden and they could build a modern living quarters or commercial area tucked out of the way.

I think restoring or using what you could of this chateau but making it yours in all the best ways would be wonderful. Especially since the views and location are so beautiful. You could make this as grand as it once was and even more so.

Just watched your evening tour around the derelict chartreuse and I must say I would have said it was beyond repair if I hadn't seen Dan and his Escape to Rural France and his derelict chateau that is even worse than yours ! He's doing it pretty well single handed so I reckon your chartreuse is saveable !

If anyone can bring this beautiful building to life, you two can. It may be worth considering as a base with incredible features on which you could build. This would be a dual win - new Château with an ancient base. Hmmmm. Whatever you decide, you'll make it lovely.

This is a decision that only you and Anna can make. That would be monumental task to restore this chateau. The cost to restore it would be astronomical! So sad that it’s in this condition. I love how you and Anna still can see the beauty in all this rubble. I know you’ll make the right decision as what you want to do. I’ll support you with whatever that decision will be.

It breaks my heart to see this chateau so destroyed and makes me angry to see all the graffiti. The property is worth buying but you might have to tear down most of Chateau first. I agree with the others that you should restore a chateau. So many need saving and you have the skill set. Thanks for sharing 😍😘

This had to be very beautiful in its glory days. It's such a shame that it has come to this state. To me, it yells, RUN NOW! I find all of the graffiti very disturbing. There is definitely much inspiration to take away with you. The views are incredible. I do agree, Edd, that this needs a huge company to take it over and make it beautiful again.❤

Could it be that the circular areas were once fountains? This must have been a beautiful home at one time. And this place would be much easier to renovate than the place that Dan Preston is doing on Escape to Rural France.

So sad to see such a beautiful chateau in such terrible condition. I know that Ed, Billy & Phil all have such love for these old historical buildings it's heart breaking for them to see these Chateaus going back to dust. Hugs to Ed and Anna as they make plans for the future. Kathy USA

I know it is wrong to destroy property but I wish councils and government could give some space for these very talented youngsters to show their art. Some of this graffiti is fantastic. I think I’ll have nightmares after seeing that. I can’t imagine how sad that was to see up close. But, as an idea, this wreck of a house might give you ideas for your new build and you can include the good parts of that total loss.

Hi Anna and Edd, I think being so close to the city limits, may explain all the graffiti, when you look at the ones in the country, you don't see it. As much as saving this would be nice, I think it's past that point. Getting the paint off the original stones, fireplaces, and the floors, will be daunting if you can do it. What is actually left of the 19th century beauty. I feel such a sadness for her. Looking forward to what comes next. I do hope you save another beauty, rather than build. Whatever you decide will be amazing, and another chapter to watch. Love from N.Y.

A new build, completely your own vision and design, will tick all of your boxes. You certainly can draw inspiration from abandoned ruins but a new build allows you to design a modern adaptation for heating, cooling, and electrical systems in a traditional chateau. I’m sure the many talents you two possess will be showcased in your own home that you may find a new business when people wanting modern chateaux of their own are willing to pay you to design for them. ❤

❤Thank you for the outing. To purchase the land, destruct then rebuild using reclaimed stones, marble, wood, etc. to build would give new life back to history.

You stated before that you would really want to build a chateau from scratch, so you wouldn't be restricted by what's already there. I guess you probably also want a nice location, with a nice view. Problem is of course that such places tend to be occupied by existing buildings. So if you fell in love with the location and the view, and you would be allowed to change the building A LOT (adding extra floors, changing the ground plan, tear down these ugly concrete pimples), and you could buy it without having to pay for the worthless existing building, then I guess you could have a go at it. Otherwise, you would just be faced with another money pit that won't fit your needs in the end. Life's too short for renovating one project after the other, and then to discover that your children have grown up and left the place before you were able to offer them a real home.

That is exactly what I was thinking. There must be other Chateaus even, that are in better shape and just need moderate renovations and are inhabitable. This looks like another 6 year project and a in big expense. There are many other people they know that have bought Chateaus in somewhat good shape and made real nice family homes. This seems to be a stressful project. I agree with you.

Yes Ed, this needs a commercial construction crew and big money. The owner has been irresponsible and that is very scary. Who knows what kind of "gotchas" are hiding in that mess. Great architecture ideas.

Everywhere Anna pointed her camera is where the true beauty lies. Wisteria is enchanting all by itself, and those arched pane windows! I can hardly imagine just how magnificent this was pre WW2. Anna’s loves for cottage charm and she has such a fabulous eye. It was so sad seeing those fireplaces destroyed like that. This actually gave me jitters. Can I ask, how would one remove all that graffiti? And why would anyone want to restore if these are you neighbors?

OMG! That old stove furnace in the basement!!!! WOW, Whoever does rebuild this, should haul that up to the top. It should be sandblasted and used out in the garden as an outdoor heating device in a cozy seating area. That would make an amazing conversation piece.

This one is much bigger, but would be the best challenge ever!!! The walls look pretty good its the structural roofs, floors, doors and windows that amounts to lots of bucks!!! I am always for the underdog ( old historical buildings ).

The view is worth the tear down to do the project you want to do. Possibly to save and use the stone, marble, etc . I'm sure Anna would be able to recycle the flowers and greenery.

It would be cool if you had a picture of this place to show what it did look like. And I think getting ideas for your own build is very good. It would be too awesome if this place could be saved. Being it is an a very beautiful area it would be nice to have a hotel complex there with the renovation of the original chateau. Enjoy your vlogs

Finally someone says it the way we all used to say it: “this house was built in the 1900’s”. I have always felt the more frequently used: built in the 16th, 17th, 18th century is confusing and even if it is the more popular version I think we seem to be making it more complicated than it needs to be…am I the only person who thinks this or is it just me? Yes, I know, there are many more urgent things to be concerned with today but this seems to me a simpler way to articulate historical periods. Maybe I’m not sophisticated enough to make the effort it appears historians think is necessary to be accurate and proper. Love your channel … watching from PA, USA.

Derelict buildings like that really require an evaluation by a structural engineer. Deterioration from years of neglect plus the fire damage means it would take a vast amount of money,and years of reconstruction by many specialist hands to get the building to a habitable state.

Those round rooms could be beautiful greenhouse rooms(l’orangerie) with gorgeous fountains in the middle of each of those round rooms. Imagine the “ laboratory” part as perfume makers lab! Glorious park & lands to grow wonderful flowers.

Hello Ed and Anna! This place is absolutely to far gone which is a shame! The Mary as you call it should have taken better care of it and the local kids should have been beat for vandalizing this building. I just don’t understand how anybody could vandalize a place like this. It has to much history and could have been someone’s home but evil people had to burn it to cause much more damage. It is such a shame for as much history is behind it.😢

Empress Josephine had a similar layout for her place in Versailles. That would be a beautiful villa once it is restored. Even though it's timbers are down I believe it should be restored and the ugly out-buildings erased. The round side pond is a koi pond, just an expression of extension of a sun porch or orangerie.

My vote is to look into purchasing the one that Billy showed you. I think that a new roof would be a lot cheaper than rebuilding this property as this will take millions of dollars especially with inflation on building materials as you see now. I think you're right about having a commercial company come through and do the build for themselves exactly as it used to be but personally I feel that this is too past its point for two amazingly driven individuals to tackle.

G’day Edd and Anna. It’s so sad when beautiful buildings are abandoned and left to ruin. In a nearby town where I live, there’s a lovely old building which was the local primary and high school. It was probably built 100-150yrs ago, but doesn’t have a use anymore, so has been abandoned. It’s lovely, very typical of South Australian buildings, in a rural setting, of the time. I believe one thing that was learned with the previous restoration is that it is more expensive to restore (depending on condition), and keep comfortable (heating, cooling, etc...

This is it Edd and Anna. This is a place to save, please. There is so little remaining of the original château that you can build this out exactly how you want it to be. The property is beautiful and the views are beautiful. This is your property. In the end it is your decision, of course. I will be here watching your journey whatever you decide to do. 🇺🇸 ❤🇫🇷 I have to say WTH is the matter with people that they think they have the right to tag and vandalisé property that does not belong to them? It is a huge problem here in the states as well. 😡

I have though about building it out seeing most is destroyed. What would you actually save. Those wood panels probably have mold everywhere. The stone is the value like one lady said and the view.

If you are going to restore a chateau this is unfortunately not the one. It was interesting to see the inside and to imagine what it was like before going into disrepair. And Anna, you can say the S word as much as you want to. It really is a shame what happens to an abandoned chateau. I always enjoy hearing your perspective.

Doing an internet search it was a very attractive building! There are some lovely old images. If anyone can rebuild it you can. There are images of the mosaic floor and found rooms.

You could negotiate with these neglectful owners to salvage everything you want from these places. All that beautiful stonework, columns,beams, carved woodwork, windows, granite stones etc...and use them all to build a fabulous place....

You have shown it's possible to rebuild a wreck and make it beautiful but what are the practicality's of running a chateau ? Does planning consent allow you to do what is needed to actually live comfortably in a listed building, Is it possible to insulate correctly, have modern underfloor heating or simular do you have to keep single glazed period windows. The new adventure that your going to undertake needs to work for you and your family, a modern worm home with the beauty of a chateue is magnificent.

Wow, what a terrible shame that this was left to fall apart, I am no engineer, but this building doesn`t even seem structurally sound, it was gutsy going into the basement, you would have to own a quarry to rebuild this place, my thinking of the round room was a beautiful fountain, but with a fireplace, seems odd. I will say you have some very good artists, that was some of the nicest graffitti, I have ever seen, love going on these journeys with you both, keep em coming.

This old ruined Chateau is so far gone I think you’d need $$$$$$$$$$$$$’s to try and restore it. So sad the owners let it go to rack and ruin. Loved the tour Ed and Anna ❤

Im in tears ~ destruction to something of such importance. 1870 😔 They know not what they do. Tagging a 1870's building is a sin setting fire to it? I can't comprehend that way of thinking. Thank you so much for bringing me here. Middle of moving I've missed watching. I dream to be there

Yes, Edd and Anna, take this one on and make it beautiful again! I know it would be very difficult, and there would be so much mystery and sleuthing involved to recreate many pieces of the puzzle; but, you have breathtaking architecture there and architectural elements still in place. If you would try to build a new chateau, how could you obtain a blueprint, the artful "vision" of a skilled architect that could even approximate the grace, grandeur, and loveliness of what those remains exhibit? And talk about never-ending video content - whew! What a journey it would be! The chateau you just finished was interesting, yes; but this one would top that one by zillions! Think seriously about doing it. As for location, how could you find a better one or better views? Good luck, and whatever you decide to do, this subscriber will keep watching!

What an interesting look at that chateau, showing many influences and building materials. If ever it is remodelled or taken down, some of the huge old beams, and window frames might be worth salvaging. I love the Georgian style wide windows, and also the boxy Italianate exterior of the 3 floors. Maybe a 'Grand Tourist' was influenced by the discovery of Herculaneum and Pompeii in the mid 18th century and picked up the Italianate, and Roman influences and reproduced them in France. Many lovely features to include in a new chateau. I hope you will be looking at other older chateaux to choose the best features to then give them your own spin, as this will make some great viewing for us. Thank you for showing us this.

What a amazing property. I truly understand your desire to build your own chateau. Would it be cost prohibited to by this property with such a magnificent view of Bordeaux; tear it down (Saving any possible details of the original build); and then building your dream on this gorgeous land? This would be as close to saving the original owners dream as possible.

You can decide what you want because we will follow you. For me, I would take the building down and build it back to what you want. The views are beautiful. Remember that this will be your home and your youthfulness is passing each year. 🙏

When I arrived in France I used to call a small chateau a 'chatouille' ! Which translates in English to 'tickle' !

Ed you are a miracle worker ,but I fear even this place has gone past receiving the blessings of your miracles and hard work .I do see how lovely it could have been ,with the vines and flowers overgrowth it looks magical and that beautiful view. But trying to restore it would be detrimental to your health (back).personally I'd look else where .But whatever you choose you have my blessings ❤

No, build your own the way you want it! Let someone else save it this one, you can’t save them all. Saving chateaus in en vogue now, someone will come take care of it. I’m all about saving old homes, we saved our 125 year old home and it took 10 years. Build first then if you still want to save another then do it.

I hope France allows for such dilapidated places to have the salvageable portions to be removed. There is almost nothing worse than letting skilled craftspeople/artists work be erased from history. Living in the midwest of the US, I would often find old structures and if I could find the owner, they would often say "take what you can", not seeing value in the remnants and later to return to share the profits with them. Some of the structures were 100 years+ with some of the unique ornate carvings (mostly wood).

😢 Can u find any photos of the old Chateau such a massive shame . But if u find a Chateau that u can do up and save go for it u did such a fantastic job on yr Manor house , to build a new one from start is that going to be viable. Another great video . ❤

Anna's camera work was very close in today. I had to stop occasionally refocus. But I have old eyes, maybe that was it. It is such a great idea to look at restoration, especially with a great view

Wow this used to be an amazing beautiful property. So sad how it has been vandalized. Is the exterior stable to restore in the fashion you wanted to build a Chateau for your family? Make it energy efficient and modern but kept in the original era??? How much land is with this? Can you give a history? I missed the beginning.

it is so sad to see this, I live in New England in the United States and we have many building that are very old, built in 1700 and 1800 and to see the cancer and death of these building is so sad, when I see this I can only think the wood was thousands years old and the people that once loved this building
