A lot of people have solar panels, power walls, and large output inverters in their house-scale emergency power setups BUT why don't we see wind turbines added to most of them? It's only sunny for half the day, after all, sometimes it's cloudy, and turbines are somewhat cheap. So how hard is it to add on domestic-sized wind turbines to generate power at night or when it's cloudy? Well, the answer is more complicated than you might think but I'm here to explain it.
Shoutout to the guy who uploaded the Bearded Collie in the wind pic to Wikimedia Commons:

Yes, dumping off overflow energy to ground is a bit of an inaccurate oversimplification but I didn't want to get too much into the wiring of wind systems in this video.

I bought two 24 volts 100 amp hours lithium iron phosphate batteries ⚡😎👍 for my system. It gives the juice somewhere else to go. Showing 26.42 volts at noon. It's super cloudy but it's windy. I'm going to raise the wind generator three more feet to get cleaner wind.

I added a 600 watts wind generator to my 1600 watts of solar panels. They charge twenty deep cycle batteries to run my 24 volts Aims Power inverter charger. I used to have to use a gasoline generator in November and March until I got the windmill.

What model wind generator if you don't mind my asking? I have three 500w 12v nature power wind generators with built in charge controllers, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to 1) connect all three to the same battery bank without issue and 2) whether there will be any issue connecting them to the same 12v battery bank as my solar panels? Any insights are appreciated!

I wired a cheap chinese Windmill into a Coleman Solar system. I tagged the leads from the Solar controller to the Battery bank on one set of lugs.. I tagged the Wind and wind controller on another set of lugs.. Both seem to be working well. Both controllers both see 13.4 volts and cut the power. I see the Brake on during the day with the windmill....And the solar working away. At night The wind blows and keeps the power at 12.8 volts with the Fridge going.. I'm on a windy Atlantic cost. So Both where a great addition to the camp. I'm sure people will say.. You can't do that. But it's working for me.

When solar production is low, wind production is typically high. i.e. winter months, night, weather. with net metering, wind could just generate more credits back to the grid. but i could see hybrid systems becoming the norm for filling in the gap during produced/consumed during winter months when solar production is much lower. as far as "Costs". as adoption goes up, costs go down. vertical turbines are on the horizon, omnidirectional turbines are on the horizon. eventually, hybrid will be the de-facto standard. instead of "oversizing" your solar for 9 months just to meet demand for the winter, it makes sense, to size solar more to summer demand, and close the gap with wind during non solar production hours.

I’m going to do a solar and wind setup. My location is god for both. There’s big wind farms nearby and commercial solar fields too.

all in one inverters are pretty cheap. and primus makes their turbines with the power dump built in. wiring it right to the batteries. pretty much the easiest thing you can install now.

Pretty sure the charge controller will protect the batteries. That is literally what its for. Also, you can stop a turbine. They have brakes. They dont have to spin all the time. You can apply the brake manually or it will apply automatically if the wind speed is too fast. When the brakes fail in extreme wind... thats where the real problem is!

Isnt the charge controller controls the current from solar panels or wind turbine not to overcharge the batteries? Excess energy produced by the panels & turbines will be just wasted bcoz the charge controller will not allow the batteries to be overcharged or damaged right?

Very well done! Thank you for posting! I’ve finally found the information I’ve been looking for. We have a Tesla Solar and Powerwall setup. We are in sunny southern CA so adding wind in a residential area doesn’t make sense. Can you post a detailed video analyzing the different wind turbines that include ridge version that utilizes a roofline?

I probably could if I've ever installed them. That's the part I'm not as familiar with compared to the electrical components and the math. Last I heard the vertical ones with short blades that look like cylinders are the best for consistency in low wind but there are people that know A LOT more about it than I do.

Just like an a/c compressor on a car. It has an electro-magnetic type clutch. I think it works when an electric type sensor tells the clutch to engage the clutch. The same can be done with a wind generator. I also know there are sensors that tell the circuit to keep the power coming through the line if the batteries are not fully charged, & once the battery bank gets below a certain level the sensors will tell the clutch on the blades to engage if they are spinning & the electric circuit will close directing the electrical energy to charge the battery bank. So if the roof of your home is completely covered with solar panels & you have a couple of sailboat wind generators, & a battery bank big enough to support your power needs, be it a single person, a couple or large family would never have to by electricity from the greedy power companies anymore. People could live completely offhrid even in a city. Also with about 3 or 4 more solar panels & another wind generator, then a person could build an electrolysis plexiglass tank with steel plates in them plated with silver, & fill the tank with water some citric acid such as lime juice & they could break down water into hydrogen with the free energy of solar & wind power & store the hydrogen in several scuba tanks, or oxygen tanks from acetylene cutting torches, with heating elements in them. Then they wouldn't have to buy diesel or gasoline to burn in their vehicles, because they would have hydrogen from the splitting of h2o aka water. All internal combustion engines including jet turbines can burn Hydrogen, which leaves no emissions, when it burns it turns back into water a never ending cycle. Peace, health & love. Yeshua bless you all.

I think having wind back up is great , you need to have the proper controller, that said , a wind turbine works at night, it also charges at a higher rate then solar sometimes, it will usually be windy enough at least once a week to completely top off your batteries, when the sun is not out , it Will usually be windy and sometimes when the sun is out it won’t be very windy , at least that is how it works out on a sailboat, I would be interested in vertical wind generators , just cause they look kool

So given the difference in where the extra power goes vs how the the solar just stops charging when there is no sun, would a better hybrid system be solar +Hydro? I would think that the hydro would be a more similar system with wind instead of solar.

I'm firmly convinced that the solar panel producers have the entire youtube community paid off. If I drive through the surrounding countryside here all I see are wind turbines, yet nobody can say a good word about installing a turbine. The amount of fear mongering utter bullshit is astounding. I know it's windy here and not so sunny in the winter especially. I'm on my own here and ok,with that.

Nah, I bought my gear. I'd never install solar north of about Kansas and I'm in Wisconsin. Too cloudy for too much of the year and too different of a UV index.

So where does your car alternator "dump" power after the battery is charged?
@EmergencySurvivalTips
@EmergencySurvivalTips Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I'm not actually sure. It can't even just ground-short it because the battery is the ground since the tires are insulated.

Average wind speed over a year where I'm from(Ireland )is between 30 and 20 km/h so might be worth supplementing the solar for the short cloudy days of the winter

doesn't the wind turbine just spin without a load attached to it? i mean you can switch it off the circuit just like solar panels, afaik. both will have open circuit voltage present, but no load so everything is cool

I actually don't know where the energy goes if it doesn't flow somewhere. It has to go somewhere. I think the magnets in the alternator style generator would heat up maybe? That would be bad. I've heard brake failures on wind turbines can result in fires so I assume the energy turns to heat somewhere.

Can the wind turbine and solar panels charge battery’s at the same time
@EmergencySurvivalTips
@EmergencySurvivalTips 6 ай бұрын
If the charge controller has the capacity, yes. But usually you'd have two charge controllers since the voltage coming in off each is so completely different.

Just so you know you can use a hot water heater to dump and there is no problem running two controller’s also you can just make sure you always have a load big enough that your batteries don’t hit 100% thats the last problem I’m having i want more like steam turbine powered by used motor oil it gets as hot as plasma over 1000 degrees 😂

Very good video! For the expense of setup and maintenance of a wind system, you are usually better off putting that money into more panels, batteries, and some extra fuel for the backup generator. Also, the wind generator is the least portable part of an off grid system if you want to relocate.
